Title: New Models Aren't Used?
Post by: beck192 on April 15, 2007, 08:54:29 pm
So I recently installed FS2 to play through it again, found out about this project, and decided to download the installer.  Well, the installer seemed to work great, but when I run FS2 through the launcher none of the new ship models load up or, as far as I can tell, any of the graphical enhancements.

On the otherhand, the annoying microsoft voice does read every piece of text in game (shudders).  I've looked at some of the guides to get started, but to be honest they aren't all that clear, and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. :(  Somebody please help.

Oh, and by the way, the stuff I've been reading about this mod sounds and looks incredible.

Now if someone would just make FS3 and we could find out what's up with Aken Bosch...

Someone get the welcome beam.

As for how to fix things, I know what you mean. Things are kinda confusing. I have been around on and off and everytime I come back, I am confused about how to install this stuff. Be thankful though, Turey's installer simplified the process by far! As does the newer launcher. I remember the days of having to manually install each mod.

Well if this is the simplified proces... I'm glad I found the mod now

So yeah, do I have to overwrite files, or what?  All of the ships and models ingame are that of the circa 2000 retail version.

Welcome beam ahoy!

:welcome:

Now, did you start up the launcher and immediately start playing? See, you first need to go under the features tab and select the enhancements you want. Then you'll see an improvement.

As for MS Sam... go under the Speech tab to be able to turn him off, or select a different voice.

Thanks for the beam.  I think. :p

I did check features such as:

"Enable specular"

"Enable glowmaps"

etc.

Then I'm hitting apply.  Am I doing something wrong?

Doesn't sound like it...

Yeesh, I really need to download Turey's installer and see what exactly it does.

I'm assuming it came with the 3.6.8 Media Vp's (they'll have names like mv_models, mv_effects, etc.), so maybe you need to select the media vp's folder as your mod under the mod tab.

Checking those boxes does nothing if all you have is the SCP launcher and the .exe files. It sounds like you haven't downloaded the media .vp files, which contain all the new stuff.

Make sure you have the latest Media .vp files (for example, you'll need "models.vp" to get improved models, "effects.vp" for improved effects, you get the idea).

Simply having the launcher doesn't give you the new features, it just lets you enable the new features once you download them in the vps. Get all the vp files you need in the link, below.

Try Karajorma's FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html) for installation instructions for the MediaVPs.

He probably has the mediavps because he used the installer. It sounds like he has "no mods" selected, which causes the retail look.

beck192, in the launcher go to the MOD tab, Select MOD, then select the Medivps folder. The little window should then say MEDIAVPS, and Mod details should have some info.

In the Speech tab, uncheck the three boxes to turn off Sam.

Ok, I went and manually downloaded all of the .vp's and placed them in my mediavp folder, and then selected it in the launcher.  There are no details listed in the launcher, and the new models do not work.  I think, however, that some of the new features *may* be working, but I'm not positive about it.

I have tried both D3D and OGL, and have large textures selected.

Is there a possibility that I am having problems because I first installed my retail copy and then used the launcher to update?  Should I go for  a clean install?

P.S. I forgot how awesome this game is even when it's plain ol' vanilla.

There should be no problem installing FSO on top of retail. That's what I did and it never had any problems.
Go with OGL, D3D is going the way of unsupported.
It sounds as though you've done everything correctly.

Let's just make sure.

You selected FSO build 3.6.9 (not 3.6.9-d) in the Launcher as your build?
You turned on the updated features in the features tab?
You selected mediavps as your mod under the mod tab?
You have the 3.6.8 Zeta Medias in the mediavps folder (3.6.9 medias not released yet)?
All of these folders and builds and Launcher are in the main FS2 folder... not the data folder or someplace weird like that?
Your data folder is empty of tables, vps, etc?
There are no rogue Vp's in the FS2 folder (the retail VP's should still be there)?

If all of there are true... then I have no clue why FSO would not be working.

EDIT: I just realized you keep saying "new" models. What exactly do you mean by that? Do you mean the newer textured, pretty-looking versions of retail ships, or completely new ships altogether?

Yeah, you are correct in terms of setup, though I'll doublecheck for any .vp's that shouldn't be there.

And yeah, I meant the newly textured ships.

Hmm.. Because i'm getting tired if working blind... Do this:

Select 3.6.9 debug build. Select mediavps mod. Run the game until it crashes or you reach main hall. Quit the game. Open fs2_open.log (in data directory) and post the stuff from the beginning of that file until (and including) the following section (OpenGL/Direct3D init).

Code: [Select]

So I recently installed FS2 to play through it again, found out about this project, and decided to download the installer.

Do you mean Turey's FreeSpace2 Online Installer, or Turey's FreeSpace Open Installer?  You want the latter, the former just installs vanilla FS2.  Link to the latter is in my siggy.

IIRC, the first one downloads and runs the second one, if asked to do so.

First of all, I want to say thanks to everyone who has tried to help.  And I apologize for the lag between my responses, I teach and coach track, so it makes for some pretty long delays until I can get home and play some FS2 ;7

Anyway, I actually uninstalled FS2, and reinstalled tonight and used the Turey's FS2 Open installer before I even started the game, and everything appears to be working now.  Just in case, I started it up in debug mode and copied the log:

Several additional question: What's the deal with the HTL models?  Do I have to install those separately?

Thanks

No, most are included in the models.vp file. :)

A new version of the vps is due out "soon," and will include more ships.

Well, I added the commands to reduce ambient light, reduce field of view, and a couple of others, and all I can say is "wow".  This game looks amazing now. :eek2:

Hats off to anybody and everybody that had a hand in this.

Well... you might want to go ahead and take out the mv_cell.vp. You do not need it.
