Title: Learning to use FRED...
Post by: MP-Ryan on April 16, 2007, 09:03:11 pm
Is there, by chance, a more detailed description of FRED somewhere that actually tells you how it works?  I'm finding the attached tutorial and help file a little vague in quite a number of places.

So... has someone written a comprehensive guide to FRED2Open and its features?  Or am I stuck figuring this out the trial-and-error way? :)

Wiki? (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Portal:FRED)

Between the walkthrough and the Wiki, you should have enough info to get seriously FREDding.

Even if I wasn't biased I'd have to stick my FAQ in there as a source of info on FRED. :)

What are you finding vague though?

Heh.  You know, just when I think I've learned all I can from your FAQ, I discover that I've missed entire sections :)

The FRED2 help index doesn't really describe how many of its features actually work or how to put them together - my earlier debriefing question being an example.  I'll read through the Wiki and your FAQ... if I have any questions either of those has missed, I'll post them here.

Thanks =)

I suggest you to play around with FRED and try basic SEXPs. Create very simple missions, many things are intuitive.

The hardest thing to figure out in FRED is how to place ships. After that, believe me, it can be pretty straightforward, except for bug-hunting. At any rate, I suggest you learn to use everything a little bit. Don't make complicated SEXP structures, mission goals, or events. Just make sure that directives and mission objectives show up when they are supposed to, and the debriefing is about what you actually did in the mission.
