Title: Odd background effect
Post by: FSW on April 17, 2007, 11:03:44 am
I'm using FS Open 3.6.9. I noticed this while playing Romans' Blunder of the campaign. I have all the graphics settings in-game and on the FSOpen launcher set to full/on.

When I move the camera (ie, my ship) around, I notice that background nebulae and planets shift position relative to the stars behind them. It looks quite odd, as if the nebulae were much closer to the player than the starfield.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a known issue? The search button didn't yield any similar topics for me.

It is a known rendering issue. It seems that indeed the retail stars (dots with motion blur) and star bitmaps are rendered differently from the nebula and planet bitmaps (or skybox texture for that matter), and that causes this difference in the relative position of objects on the background.

Strangely, it also affects subspace nodes if you look carefully.

I hope it gets fixed in close future because it looks kinda goofy. It would appear that it is somehow bound to the field of view problems with HUD targeting boxes being mis-aligned with the target...

I've heard that FOV (Field of View) settings using the -fov command can cause this, as can using wide screen resolutions.  However, -fov settings can be used to compensate somewhat for widescreen, IIRC.
