Title: Unknown Target's Sketchup ships
Post by: Unknown Target on April 18, 2007, 12:04:17 pm
This time it's a bomber, two seats:

EDIT: Rather than starting a new thread for every one I may or may not make, I'm just going to keep this one thread as a central repository.

WOW!!!!!!!!! Please get that ingame!  Incredible craft, really great work! It looks more of a heavy fighter than bomber too.

...Would you call that an assault / attack fighter?  (eg, A-10 (http://photohome.com/photos/aircraft-pictures/fighters/a-10-thunderbolt-1.html)?)

Perhaps you could jazz-up the end of the nose? Little boring as it is.

[A-10 fanboy]Add a Gatling gun as a secondary primary weapon.[/A-10 fanboy]

How's this for the front?

Poly count is 6377 (6000 limit). Still have a lot of optimizing to do, though :)

Love it. I totally dig the off-centre cannon, and the quad really adds something to the nose. Although, that dorsal turret (?) seems a little out of place as it is.

Like the Boanerges, it's ugly, but in a good way. Nice work.

I like it. It looks like it came straight out of starshatter. I think its the.... I dunno what you call them... the tails, fins on the wing ends.

Very nice, love to see how this baby handles in game..................although I agree with Mefustae, this dorsal turret look out of place, maybe a little small and weedy looking. I recommend bulking it up a bit! Otherwise....

I liked the quad turret but IMO maybe you should make that a bit bigger and like said before re-do the dorsal turret.

Post by: Unknown Target on April 19, 2007, 11:37:13 pm
I did make them a little larger - they're supposed to be small caliber, just enough to keep fighters from trailing.

BTW, about the missile bays - this is an older version, but an idea of how the torpedoes will be attached:

Heh :)

So...I'm trying to UV Map this thing, but I've run into some stumbles. First of all, I select the faces that I want to map, then planar map them to their respective axises....except...how do I view the entire UV map so I can arrange things? And is there any way to select the UV map segments by what group in the model they are? I'm using 3DS Max.

A couple of those tubes could be shortened and tweaked to look like the dumbfire rocket pods on Attack Helicopters.  The ones on the wing tips might look good as those and add a little ordinace variety.  Mean looking bird in any case.
Title: Re: Unknown Target's Sketchup ships
Post by: Unknown Target on April 25, 2007, 08:58:48 pm
The tubes are actually ordinance positions (specifically the torpedoes)...so yea, it can be really anything (dumbfire rocket pods, etc).

As for the big ship, some updates:

Those turrets look a little more ship to ship then anti-strike craft.  When doing AAA its good to keep rate of fire and range of motion in mind.  It needs to "look" like it could spin around and fling rounds at absurd rates.  Those look like they would sedately lay on a target and blast away.  The VLS tubes could use a little work.  Smaller more tightly packed tubes might look a little more dangerous.  It would leave open the option for reloading plus bad ass silo doors.  Well that's MHO at least.

Looky at this:

... When I get home from work, I'll try to see if I can post a link to a Military.com video of the Phalanx ship defense gun firing off... now that's a decent rate of fire!
Here ya go:
phalanx.flv (http://files.filefront.com/phalanxflv/;6857520;;/fileinfo.html)
-Remember, don't use Download accelerators with FileFront (or tell the accelerator to only download using one connection).
-If your media player can't play this file, use VLC Media Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/).  (You may have to associate .flv files with VLC.)

-for inspiration

In leui of redoing the turrets, as suggested by the Relic boards (which I'm too lazy to do atm :D, but will do later), I've begun texturing with Sketchup. It's very possible and not too hard (actually sometimes a LOT easier than regular UV mapping methods). If anyone wants I can write up a tutorial.

Obviously still a WIP:

With some 30 second weathering/darkening:

I took that texture from this model:

What I did was draw all the panel lines on the model in SU, export as a 2D image, then stick all the views into a texture map.
EDIT: The reason it looks so different is because in this shot, the outlines were enabled - the texture is taken when they're disabled.

More progress - done completely in PS CS3 and Sketchup, no exterior UV mapping programs used: (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v56/UnknownTarget/Fighter1Texture2-3.jpg)
(A lot of wasted space, I know).

Click for bigger. Ignore the mess with the canopy, I haven't put in it's own texture map yet - I'm just putting it in the game for fun atm :)

And more progress:

Post by: StarSlayer on May 07, 2007, 12:40:19 pm
To be perfectly honest, and UT would probably agree, that ship doesn't really meet the design philosophies of Battlestar Galactica at all.  It and his bomber with the Lewis Gun are great ships, but they would be out of place next to Vipers

There is some "family resemblence" IMO, but if that's a Colonial ship then it's for a very different mission and is probably of an older vintage than even the Mark II.
Title: Re: Unknown Target's Sketchup ships

How about having it be a merc ship?  Like Han Solo's Millennium Falcon, except a gun ship.

It's not supposed to be a Colonial ship, dunno how it looks like one other than the "big, heavy, and dirty" look :)

Decided to put this on the shelf for awhile. The "Finished" version (couple of bad mapping bits). Next up is another fighter, using lessons learned from this one :)

Judging from the relative size of the engine when compared with the rest of the craft, that shouldn't be a problem.  :drevil:

Double post for update:

Removed the landing gear so I can reduce the polycount for FS2. I also have no need for this ship atm (doesn't fit my universe), so I'm probably going to release it when I'm done texturing it (on the condition that if you put it in game, you tell me how you did it :-D):
