Title: Pets
Post by: Hades on April 20, 2007, 10:51:17 am
Which pet do you like the best?

A:Cat

B:Dog

C:Shivan

D:Vas

I would like a Shivan if it doesn't kill me and or eat me and rip me to shreds with its beam canon. :) Or a Vas as long i can tame it so it doesn't eat my :headz:. :)

Shivans have to go under a 10 year quarantine to be brought from England, so I couldn't take him with me. :(

i prefer cats.

seriously, the only reason humans like dogs is obediance, and that vacant expression in their face that humans interpret as love.

cats dont **** around with that stuff.

Perhaps I just don't like cat's because I'm allergic to them...

:sigh:  Never stopped anyone in my family.  I and most of the rest of us are all allergic to cats, but I've found that if you get them while they are still young, you kind of build an individual immunity to their allergens.  I still get kind of itchy around cats I don't live with, but my two don't give me trouble.

Besides, you can't help but love cats.  They have so many personality quirks.

And anyway, I've met a few sweet dogs, I'll admit, but I do not like dogs in general.  I do not like being jumped on, licked, or barked at.

Dogs for the win.

Though I think a Shivan would make a great attack pet.  Let him patrol your yard at night.

Likewise with cats, really.

Make sure it doesn't sneak up when you're sleeping and eat your brains.

Cats ftw. If only so I can deliver the immortal line: "I went round my mate's house and stroked his pussy."

Indeed.

Cats. I like their personality compared to the rather dull, vacant dog personalities. Besides, cats are independent and can largely take care of themselves.

Hmm... pictures, pictures...
found one of my younger and more adventurous cat, Pablo:

I like both, but dogs I enjoy most.

Dogs are usually more active and playful, while cats are more calm and serious.

Not always.  My youngest cat's sole purpose in life is to get me or my wife to drag a braided grey cord around the house so she can ambush it from around a corner.  I think that's one of the things that endear them to me the most, really.  Cats do try to conduct themselves with such dignity, but underneath it all, they are cute furry little predators that loooove to play.  And well, it is kind of macabre, but it really is sweet in a way when they try to bring you a lizard.  Just trying to do their part to feed the family.   ;)

True... but when they begin bringing dead rabbits in the middle of the night it's a little less so...

Or how about this? Before we got a locking cat door, my cat loved to bring live mice in, drop tham and watch us run around trying to catch it. It's hilarious when we think about it now, but back then... :)

Cats are freaky little creatures. They lurk.

Now if you could combine the physical cuddleness and purring of a cat with the attitude of one of the smarter, semi-reserved dog breeds you would have the perfect pet.

As it stands the Shetland Sheepdog comes closest. :p

 IMO that qualifies as siggy material...

I'm a dog person all the way. I don't hate cats or anything like that. I just got so attached to dogs when growing up. I couldn't catch our cats, but dogs were quite friendly with me. And don't have those talons that appear as out of nowhere.

Cats are fun to watch but often have that **** off attitude, dogs are allways ready to play with you. Both are nice in their own way.

That's a good part of why they are so much fun!  My eldest, Nutmeg, likes to play both "tag" and "hide and seek" with me.  Her preferred method is to "buzz the tower," just barely brushing past my leg as she tears down a hallway, all the while making this trilling noise like, "Catch me if you can!"  Basic predatory/prey type games, but she's really cute about it.

But, re: the "**** off attitude" mentioned earlier, she'd never play those games with anyone else but me and my wife, though she'll condescend to be petted by other people she's come to consider "family."  Trust seems to be a lot harder to earn with a cat than with a dog.  Perhaps that shouldn't make a cat's affection more intrinsically valuable, but to me it does.  How special is the affection of a beast that will "love" anyone who scratches him behind the ears?

That said, I think there must be some way that cats and dogs both recognize cat-people and dog-people.  Anyone else ever noticed that?  A lot of the dogs I've met (including the one I grew up with) had an intrinsic distrust of me right from the beginning that they never get over it.  Cats, on the other hand...  I know most of the cats in my neighborhood.  At this point, they recognize me from past encounters and know me to be generally trustworthy, but that initial meeting where they just decide to trust me on a lark is a little more bizarre.  Cats do tend to be distrustful of humans (not unwise), but most cats I've met on my walks seem to decide I'm ok fairly quickly.  At first, I thought it was because I know how to make sounds like a momma cat calling her kittens, but cats respond to my wife in the same way, and she doesn't make any cat-talk at all.  I'm now thinking it must have to do with body language, but that's just a wild guess.  All I can say for sure is that this has happened with cats and dogs way too often for me to think it is mere coincidence.  Somehow, they know.

Here's a picture of Nutmeg being possessive of her Mama.

Nutmeg looks a bit evil

Most photo's of cats make them look evil, something to so with the way the light reflects in their eyes. I'm a cat person myself, My wife and I have had one for 10 years now. She is the sweetest, cleanest, mommy's girl of a cat I have ever known.

Nutmeg looks a bit evil

Heh heh heh!...  That's my girl.  No, seriously, she's a sweet kitty.  I've met evil cats, but you would not be the first Nutmeg has had that effect on.  Most of the evil in that photo is because I didn't have redeye reduction turned on, and the redeye filters on my photo touchup package don't work on cat eyes.  She does have bit of a Jeckle & Hyde thing going on though, both in terms of her appearance and personality.  My wife and I joke sometimes that Nutmeg is the result of an explosion in the DNA factory.  She's jealous and a bit high-strung, but very affectionate.  Every morning while I get ready for work, she's there hopping up on the counter trying to get me to pick her up and love on her.  Occasionally, if I'm not quick enough to pay attention, she'll put a paw on my arm and yell at me.

I am currently raiding dragonfly larvae - Brown Hawkers, Four-Spotted Chasers, a Large Redeye and some Azure/Variable Bluets.

They are intriguing.

Heh, my mate's cats are brothers so you can imagine the fighting that goes on. It's halved his electricity bill, we all just play with the cats rather than his 360. :D

They also seem to like beer - has anyone else noticed this about cats?

Alas, I had to have my cat put down last week, he'd been up and down for a while, but his kidneys failed on him in the end :( He was 19, and had a very good life consisting mostly of eating and sleeping, (but then, he was a cat), so he didn't do bad, but I still feel like a bit like I'm in mourning for an old friend.

Come to think of it though, at 19 years, I actually knew him before some of the kids I'm going to university with were born....
