Title: Tutorial for playing the game
Post by: Mon on April 23, 2007, 08:29:19 am
I'm looking for a tutorial on playing the actual game.  (I keep dying).  For instance, how do you dodge a 'launch'?  I'm using the mouse because I'm playing on a laptop, but that's not working so much...gonna get a USB numpad this afternoon.  Any links to tutorials or tips on how to dogfight would be appriciated.  I really want to get in to this game.

Afterburner + Countermeasures + any direction other than forward, timed at the right moment, usually when the beeps indicate that the missiles are almost about to impact.

When you get truly skilled, it will be afterburner and direction only, you won't need the countermeasures 95% of the time. But until then, it's the above.

All good tips
I'll try it tonight when I get home.
I didn't look at the simulator training...you're refering to the main screen option that also has stats on ships?

And thanks for the welcome  :D

There are training missions during the campaign, not in the "Mission simulator" in the Techroom.

IIRC it's in the second stages of training missions that you are told how to use countermeasures. You'll have to play 3 campaign missions too (excluding the first 3 training missions).

Those training missions are really bad in this respect. All the missiles could in theory impact into you, and you would still be commended, and complete the training mission.

And your dodging efficiency also greatly depends on the craft you fly and the missile you want to dodge. With a Medusa, you'd hardly have a chance to dodge a swarm of Tornadoes, but you can do that very easily in a Perseus against Harpoons.

Ship selection has no bearing on how much or which secondary fire you are and aren't able to dodge.

Only skill matters there.

See, this is why people who don't know how to play shouldn't give out opinions.

*very slowly* Yes, but it is harder to dodge a missile in a bomber than in a fighter with more maneuverability and speed.

Hence, skill.

It takes skill to compensate.

What is wrong with you people? I write it, and yet none of you read it.

Also speed does not matter, Skill And Aiming matters.Example:A well trained person pilot can take down a HORUS in an Ursa .

A well-trained person in an Ursa will die before a well-trained person in a Horus. A really, really good player in an Ursa will still die before a decently-trained person in a Horus.

I'd love to side with BlackDove to make myself look uberl33t, but seriously, there's only so much you can do when you're in a big, bloated Bomber with an even somewhat-decent guy in a fighter on your tail. In that case, you'd probably have to rely on good teamwork to stay alive.

I can agree for singleplayer, though.

Why do Noobs people think the Ursa is the worst bomber? It is not i assure you.Out of all the bombers, its the best, it also has the best maneuverability.

EDIT:I could show you personally...But the messed up server, says "Connection Failed".

You people seem to have lost the sight of the point that we're talking about missile evasion, and not player versus player or skill versus skill.

So, to reiterate, your points are null and void, and I am the king of everything.

So it always was, so it always shall be.

Well, the conversation sort of spiraled off into it. I am but a little cog in a huge machine! Goebel made me do it.  :nervous:

The conversation didn't spiral into anything. You people just wanted to justify your opinions, and so introduced other aspects that nobody cared about or was exploring before, in order to do so.

At least have some dignity, and admit your mouth is full of dick, when it is such.

He's right! What have I been doing? *sob* Forgive me!

But seriously, it takes more skill to evade in a bomber than in an interceptor. It is easier to evade in the interceptor. Put two equally skilled people in a bomber and an interceptor and the interceptor will win. Take two people, one in a bomber, one in an interceptor, who are evenly matched. Now put the bomber guy in an interceptor as well. Disregarding the different tactics necessary, he will win. He will be free to use more complicated manoeuvres, and he will win due to his amazing amount of skill at the game! Do you get it?

Assuming the two people suck ass.

If they're both brilliant pilots (like me), they will evade the same amount, Interceptor or Osiris. The outcome is the same, if you don't suck.

The outcome is a tie.

Whole point.

My mind was doing this when I read your post;

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll be sitting at my computer screen rotating wireframe polygons in my mind until you get it working.

That's why I carefully reworded my response to avoid the entire issue, and in doing so committed one of the blackest logical fallacies known to man. God, don't people read?

It must work! Otherwise my hundreth post will have been spent in vain like the others.

Friend Hades, in most aviation parlance, pitching is the pointing of the nose up or down (climbing/diving). Yawing is turning left and right. Surprised no one caught this.

Everyone should just do the training missions. Fs2 is one of the games that has great simplified training missions spread throughout most of the game. Yes in the training mission where they teach you to dodge missiles you still get commended even if you don't dodge any, but it's to get you a basic know how and feel for what's it's like to dodge missiles. When you actually try to dodge missiles in the real game utilizing the basic **** in that training mission, you'll usually find it's easier than having continual missiles lobbed at you in that training mission. And if you still can't dodge missiles, i'd say you didn't really try very well in the training mission.

My favorite way to dodge missiles is to take them head on, and roll my craft going for it, until the last moment where i turn away with burners. Works like a charm when you learn to do it right. It's more of a daredevil maneuver.
After that there's another way to dodge a missile head on. It's where you go for the missile head on yet again pulling your craft into a roll, and pull on your burners still rolling and you sort of spin around the missile while it just goes passed you. This one's a lot harder, i use to be super good at it, but not anymore, of course it's my more fun way of dodging missiles, but you get the idea.
I like taking missiles head on because you can actually see them and do better coordinated dodging maneuvers without countermeasures. Hell, dodging a missile head on you can't use countermeasures for that, just try it, you might like it, and it will increase your skill in dodging missiles. :)
