Title: Voices in FS2 SCP
Post by: MT on April 28, 2007, 11:15:01 pm
Long time lurker (you guys can save the plasma beam shot for now :nod:) but need to ask something:

A friend of mine is playing SCP and he has Microsoft Sam for the voices instead of the original voices in the missions. According to him, if he unticks the simulated speech options at the speech tab on the launcher, he gets no voices at all.

Oh, he is currently stuck at As Lightning Falls, so I think getting the voices fixed before the next mission is something very good (even critical, IMO).  :drevil:

Incidentally, on my speech tab, it says Speech API 5.1 not installed and all other buttons are not usable. However I have no audio problems.  (Note that I am using a Shivansps pack downloaded in the middle of last year, off mininova I think. As such I think my pack is old and is probably not up to date). The executable file used by the launcher is: D:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_r_20060425_Kara.exe

I might want to post on the Rebels and Renegades mission, regarding saving the Hinton :mad: (not with the ramming but with it being consistently being wasted by the Sobek), but I figured that is probably more suitable in the general forum (and even then it might be a old topic there).

It is old. That executable is over a year old as you can see from the backwards date in the filename. I don't remember that specific bug with it but I wouldn't be surprised if that is the cause.

You could try using Turey's installer (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html) to update.

Thanks for the reply.

As for my friend (with MS Sam for voice), he downloaded it only a week ago. I think he used Turey's installer, since he can't use BT at his university dorm.

I'd suggest getting hold of one of Taylor's X builds for your friend then (I haven't got a link handy) as he doesn't compile voice into his windows builds so this issue shouldn't arise.

You might also have luck with 3.6.9 Release Candidate 8 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44200.0.html) for exactly the same reason but I know that Taylor fixed a rather nasty bug between that release and the 3.6.9 Official release 12 days later and I don't particularly want to recommend it unless the X build isn't a better suggestion.

Have friend post pic showing names and sizes of files in his FS2 folder.

Yeah sounds like a corrupt stu_fs2.vp now that I think about it.

Well that does rather solve the problem. Stu_fs2.vp isn't corrupt so much as missing completely. :D

The Official .vp files have the following names

    * root_fs2.vp
    * sparky_fs2.vp
    * sparky_hi_fs2.vp
    * stu_fs2.vp
    * tango1_fs2.vp
    * tango2_fs2.vp
    * tango3_fs2.vp
    * smarty_fs2.vp
    * warble_fs2.vp

Not all are needed to run the game but if you copy the ones your friend is missing from your own PC it should solve his problem.

Any idea of a site where these files are downloadable from?  Im on a uni connection and it has some seriously strict P2P restrictions on it so im a bit limited in where i can find them.  I checked the site for download links but the only one i found was a dead link.

I was basically suggesting you got MT to bring them over on a CD :D

But failing that Turey's installer should be able to install them. Run it again and check you haven't missed something.

emailing them to yourself also works.  Although a CD would be the best bet.  If you can't burn a CD and can't attach files to emails, PM me your email, and depending on the size, I'll send them to you sooner or later.  If they're more than a few megabytes, I can't email them from home (dialup woes), and if they're more than a gig, I can't put em on my flash drive to email them from somewhere else, so it will be the weekend at the soonest if that's the case.

Or you could ask soembody to put it on an FTP server.  A number of people here have hosting capabilities.

I am practically halfway across the world from Marly. ;) We are fellow forumites elsewhere.

I have problems with Megaupload and Rapidshi... I mean Rapidshare but I also have a few dropsend accounts that i can use. There are no changes in the voice file across versions of SCP, since my copy of SCP is a year old, right?

The SCP never touched the retail VPs.

We install on top of of retail so those files should always remain the same.

If Marly isn't local to you then there are ways to simply download the missing VPs without Turey's installer but I don't know the URLs for the files. Razorkiss or Turey are the people to ask.

I'd recommend you get at least warble as well from the same site too.

I've just thought, shouldn't the FS2Oggcutscennepack.vp be under the Data/movies folder? Just incase he ever plays the Port, won't the cutscene's being here not interfere with the port's movies? :nervous:
Title: Re: Voices in FS2 SCP
Post by: MT on May 01, 2007, 08:59:31 am
Speaking of cutscenes, I don't get the 2nd cutscene (the monologue) after the final mission. All I get is the first one (with the Shivans). However I do have all the appropriate avi files in the movies folder. :confused:

Maybe I should just download FS retail and learn to install SCP separately. Besides, the installation pack that I have doesn't include Inferno.

You might as well get the Ogg cutscene pack that Marly has as I think AVI's are not going to be supported in future releases of FS2Open. Either that Or if you have the cd's, just place the MVE's from them in Data/movies, as they will always be supported!

Putting them in Data wouldn't make the blindest bit of difference as the game can still find stuff in Data when running a mod.

The cutscenes in the FS1Port folder override the FS2 ones due to the fact that the -mod switch gives anything in the FS1Port folder higher priority than anything in Data or the main folder.  The only issue you might possibly get is if you have one set as .oggs and one set as .avi or .mve.

That's something that is definitely fixed in 3.7 but I'm not certain whether you'll get issues in 3.6.9 or 3..6.10.

In other words, the latest CVS builds, or release candidates!! They're just way off releasing yet!  :P

What makes me wonder is why is he asking for 3.6.10 instead of 3.7? :lol:

Sorry too bump, but im getting this same problem, and its not Freespace without the voices of the people.
Only just downloaded it all today.

Here's a pic of my Freespace2 directory:

Can anyone help? Really want the voices.
If i turn off the computer generated voices i don't here anyone talking. Also in the training at the beginning, there are no voices, with or without the computers ones.

Hmm. Your stu_fs2.vp (the vp file containing voice acting) is small, since it's supposed to be 165mb. Try redownloading with Turey's Installer. Let's hope that'll work. If not, download FS2 from Home of the Underdogs and extract over your FSO installation. Oh, and

Thought it might be a bit small, probably cos i stopped downloading/installing yesterday when i went to bed, restarted today. Downloading stu_fs2.vp now. Thanks for the quick help, and thanks for the welcome. Only ever played the first FS (loved it) and the FS2 demo, great series of games, can't wait to play this. Yesterday i was talking to someone about old games, and how game cinematics are such amazing quality. Some how this started me off telling him about FS, and man, it brought back great memories of this game.

Oh, if you want to experience FS1 with the same level of graphical pleasure, play the FSPort mod first. Then move on to the FS2 main campaign.

I have the full FS1, just want to know what happens next. How do i setup my joystick to do more e.g. make FS2 use the throttle etc.

Edit: Nvm, figured it out.

But it's at least twice as much fun to play FSPort when it looks as good as FS2 with the MediaVPs. Oh well, suit yourself.
