Well, try this tutorial ("http://www.scifi-meshes.com/tutorials/SFA/Phasers.htm"). It's not for beams per se, but you can adapt it.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I can't really use that method, 'cause MAX crashes when i try it, so back to the drawing boards for me.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

You put in a parallel light and knock the two tubes right down in size. Click on the Modify tab. Click on the Atmophere/Effects thingy. Add. Add a volumetric fog and put some fractal noise in the fog. Make the fog whatever colour you want the beam to be. Tada.

Thanks; I need to try that and see how it looks, since I have been wondering about the same thing for a while...

Pretty good, but the beam seems to be a bit too "solid" if you know what I mean. Try blurring the line between the halo around the beam and the beam itself. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Increase the density on the white light's Volume 'fog' (should be light).
Mess around with the Noise settings a bit more.

Not bad tho. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

No, you just click the little Fall-off button thingy so the light bleeds outside the little tubes.

What a pun...   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
Also note that beams are similar to lightsabers in how they look, so a lightsaber tutorial might work   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif).
