Title: Me = Pilot
Post by: Unknown Target on May 05, 2007, 03:06:58 pm
As of today, I am now officially an FAA-certified private pilot. Go me! :D

Congrats mate, I always wanted to learn how to fly but never got around to it. Have fun, and don't crash! ;)

Okay, what does FAA-certified actually mean? Visual or instrument? And what plane type(s)?

Congratulations anyway... me only wishes that some day I'll have enough money and free time to go through all the involved stuff... ;7

Commercial?

If so, when you introduce yourself over the PA, mention that you're Unknown Target.  I fly sometimes, might run into each other...

Thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement. :D To be an FAA certified private pilot, you're certified for VFR flights as long as you don't carry passengers for compensation (i.e. they pay you to fly them somewhere). :)

Congrats UT!!!

I'd become a pilot too, if extremely high taxation didn't render flying GA planes impossible here :doubt:
Add that the GA airport nearest to my house (12 km) has been closed due to environmentalists not wanting it, and the nearest one is 80 km from here...

My father wanted to buy a paraglider with engine (that would also be used by me if we bought it :D), but as soon as he discovered the number of bureaucratic problems related to these things...

Why does everyone keep saying that?! You need Helios to get the hull below 10% because of the big damage flag!

[/nerdspasm]

Nice that you've become a pilot. It's something I've thought about from time to time, just too expensive to get an airplane. What do you fly?

I thought you knew that Alpha one can hack the tables and remove the flag!

Alpha one does no such thing! He modiefies the relevant mission file and changes the Sathanas in to a crago container. Then he floats by it and taunts it.

Congratulations, it feels great to have that ticket in your pocket, doesn't it?  What plane were you using for training?  Towered or uncontrolled field?  Was the checkride no problem or did you have any "please don't fail me" moments like I did?

I'm coming up on my first 100 hours, hope to get it in the next month or so.  I need to think of something special to do, but I'll probably just end up doing touch and goes around the pattern in a beat up 152 instead :)

Heh :) I fly/flew a Diamond DA-20 for the training - fun little bird, got a stick control and throttle quadrant (and GPS! woohoo! :D):

And yea, it does feel good :D We're flying out of a Class D airspace with a single 10,000 foot runway (paved, obviously). The area's great for training because you have all that runway room if you screw up, but there's almost no traffic nearby so you can do touch and gos all day and not think twice about it. Then, if you want some busy airspace, San Juan Intl. is just to the North, and that's pretty busy Class C there :).

The checkride wasn't too bad...I did have a "oh God I just totally flunked why doesn't he end it now?" when he put me under the hood and did some unusual attitudes. I recovered from those fine, but then he told me to find my island's VOR, and I got lost almost instantly - lucky for me I flew well and he let me continue the checkride. :) Afterwards he told my instructor that I flew like a 250 hour pilot, so I was pretty happy about that :p

Good luck with getting yours Badger :D. Hasn't your instructor been prepping you? You might want to practice your power on/off stalls, if you want something different.

Ah sorry I didn't communicate very well, I've had my PPL for about a year now.  That's awesome that you trained in the Katana, I still haven't gotten to fly any Diamonds yet but they look absolutely gorgeous.  Plus I'll bet the stick and throttle quadrant feel a lot more fun than the yoke and push-lever things for throttle and mixture in the Cessnas.  Actually all I've flown are Cessna 152s and 172s, I really gotta branch out one of these days.  Have you had a shot at flying the DA-40 yet?  That thing is pretty much my dream plane.

Ah, kewl, my bad :). I flew 152s and 172s, and yea, the Diamond's stick/throttle quadrant is a lot more fun than the yolk/push throttle combo. :) The Diamond's also faster, and a lot more responsive (I had trouble doing some maneuvers because the plane was just so damn eager to fly, it's easy to come in high, or when doing a soft field take-off, pull up too early - you don't stall, you just don't demonstrate flying in ground effect long enough). And yep, I've flown the 40 when the 20 was down for maintenance. Basically it's a four seat version of the 20 to me - it's responsive and nice, but noticeably heavier. The GARMIN 1000 glass cockpit is a real treat though ;)

Congrats UT!!! I really envy you... I really do :D

I'd like to get a licence aswell, god only know how much I'd like to have one. Sadly it's quite expencive here (like anything else), so either I'll start saving money and perhaps try it after several years or win in a lottery :p

Anyways, good to hear that you passed. Well done mate, well done.
