Is it possible? You know, like have missiles on a fighter like they are today?
-
Yes.
For example, BtRL has external missiles and, IIRC, so does TBP... if that's what you mean.
Although I must point out that internal missile bays are going to be used much more often in the future due to stealth and aerodynamic reasons... They are used in some fighters already today.

Always nice to be able to haul more ordinance though. I've actually been wondering about a hardpoint-based system for weapons, but I'm pretty sure that's totally unfeasible currently.
-
Well.. You can set weapon bank specific loadouts.. So sort of hardpointish system is possible.
-
Except you've got like a 3 bank limit. Plus the HUD isn't designed for a lot of missile banks.
-
Still can't swap, say, a gun pod for an ECM unit. :P Kinda puts a cramp on true hardpoint flexibility.
-
We'd need tertiary subsystems for ECM pods anyway. :)
-
what ever happened to phreak's tertiary weapon system he was working on?
-
He stopped working on it.
I've been trying to make sure that any code I add assumes that there may be a tertiary system later on though.

Sounds a bit Starlancery to me. :p

If gameplay upgrades are already discussed, what is the state of sensor and targeting code?
What I had in mind was a rearward firing missile, a'la Firefox. (Think Russian)
A broadened code could also be used for more intricate turreted weaponry: namely you could slew the turret's FOV around, and fine-tune the point defense of your bomber or manage a gunboat.
In the same vein you could have slewable sensors around and "hunt" for bogies beyond normal sensor range - or hunt for comms messages a'la FarCry / Steel Battalion.
(This could be especially funny in multi, as you could capture the hostile team's transmissions. If the missions had some tactical depth to it, such information could be critical and would force both sides to plan a lot farther ahead, and heavy handed information warfare could ensue.)

thats already possible with firepoint normals. you could launch missiles in any direction. the ones firing back would be better if they were heat seekers, getting aspect lock on your backside is rather difficult. :D
i actually was thinking of having a gunboat with sidefire. a rack of torpedo tubes on one side of the ship, you fly an orbital pattern around the target, and lob bombs at it. the ship would be fast so that it can quickly manuver to avoid flak and beams. it would need a sight for this though, im sure something could be scripted. you dont want to keep looking to the side you want too look forward so that you dont fly into anything that can kill you.

I did mention once a while ago about highly explosive counter measures, sort of like a mine. You've got a bandit closing in on your six, launch a counter measure which impacts on the bandit (or when the bandit gets relatively near to it) and explodes into a number of micro charges (which in turn have strong explosions) sort of like the Inferno missile, yet not needing a second hit on the launch button but having a proximity detection system. I still wondering if this would be possible?

I'm fairly sure it's doable... perhaps with a bit of scripting (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Script_-_Proximity_Trigger)...

Easy,..........Cake in fact :p
Unfortunately i need to DL/Buy everything again, I dont even have extracted TBL's anymore *gasp*
