Title: X-COM: TFTD comes to Steam
Post by: Ulala on May 09, 2007, 12:56:10 am
http://www.steamgames.com/v/index.php?area=game&AppId=7650&cc=AU

Great low price of $2.45, works nicely on my machine without needing to deal with emulation software that would give me some speed bugs at times.. but unfortunately it seems GameTap has the better prequel, X-Com: UFO Defense already, so probably shouldn't expect to see it on steam anytime soon.

Anyway, I've already spent hours playing. Not sure if some of the old bugs still remain, but so far it has been stable for me. Great for anyone who wants an cheap and easy way to experience some nostalgia (although I'm sure there are cheaper ways, but $2.45? Come on).

Long live X-Com!  ;)

I got X-COM Ufo Defense, TFTD and Apocalypse free from the HOTU...

@Admins and mods: please delete this post if HOTU is considered warez.

Why let people have it for free, when you can make them pay for it?

Steam is EVIL. We already knew this.

Considering FS2 is on HOTU I don't think they'll have a problem with it :p

But I thought of it as "Well... FS2 cannot be found easily... they can download it from the HOTU...".
And FS2 is not abandonware :p (yet ;))

While I agree with the majority of the thread, $2.45 isn't much to pay to not have to deal with emulation software that didn't run 100% for me anyway, as I already stated. I don't think it's that bad of a deal for people who want to re-live some of the old days without much hassle (aside from steam itself) It's not like they're trying to charge $19.95 for it or something.

I'd buy it, but I've heard horror stories about how damn near impossible that game can be. That, and I'm stuck on dial-up. I'd probably have stay online for an ungodly amount of time to download it.

It can be brutally tough, someone here gave me the tip of buying a bunch of worthless soldiers and letting them die off every now and then. This way the game won't ramp up the difficulty on you too much.

you know floppies may be worthless but i bet with the right mobo you can boot of a usb flash drive. it might be worth it to intall dos to one to play ancient games like that.

It is possible to set multiboot using XP & multiple partitions... not sure if you'd want to go that far, though.

The HOTU version works without any problem on XP.
Or at least, it works without any problem on my PC, so it should work also on yours.

And no, I don't use DOSbox. I run it with the fixed executable included in the zip package. No emulation required.

That was me. Works too. Perversely.

Ah, Steam, the root of all evil, because it has to verifiy that I actually own the game?!?!?!

No, because it causes abandonware games to cease being abandonware (I guess?)
