Title: Impressed
Post by: fastcasters on May 09, 2007, 05:15:26 pm
OK - I'll start with an admission:

I spend most gaming time playing hard core racing sims, both on-line and offline (started with GPL/Grand Prix Championship and now nkpro on line league)) and never really got into the space sims but Freespace 2 was THE exception. I loved the game and payed it avidly but then lent it to a mate and kinda forgot about it - then like somebody else mentioned here, started thinking about it a week or so ago and started to look for the game.  E-launder had a few copies but then I came across HLP - awesome job guys :)

Took me a while to figure it all out and there was much cursing into the early hours while trying and failing to get it all running. But then after properly reading the FAQs/WIKI, these boards and much trial and error it all started to work (thats half the fun of this type of thing - I mean its just plain dull loading up a CD/DVD and running the game after 5 mins)

As I said I spend a lot of time on racing sims and their various mods, the majority of which are high quality - the quality of the FS2/FS1mods and associated installer is easily equal to that. The good lady of the house is now quite distressed to think that there is another PC sim that will absorb me that comes with shedloads of quality MODS.

Keep it up guys - great work

I have just retired from online racing 1 week ago, i am also 3 time world champion on 2 different leagues. (under different alias) i have raced many online racing games.

Yeah.. the lure of freespace is hard to resist! :p. How i found myself on hl scp forums is through another space game called freelancer.

As soon as you make your own Welcome speech (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39765.0.html)?

Oh come on, welcome him properly:

All batteries........ target fastcasters. Open fire!

:welcome:

Welcome to the HLP Station. Exits are located to the right, left, up, down, and 4th-dimensionally. However all of them are blocked, except the 4-d one, and no one's yet figured how to reach it. In the event of a landing of any kind, you can and will be used as a flotation device. Do not feed the resident Shivan Carl (or me for that matter...) as he will become voracious and chew your leg off. You can find him in the ventilation duct. Throw him your lunch and he'll leave you alone (usually). Flamethrowers can be found under your seat but due to financial constraints have been re-filled with holy water. Plasma rifles can be found in storage lockers. To prevent act of n00b, however, these can only be opened by Moderators, Volition, GOD or a hyperintelligent shade of BluE. Please remember that any attempt to use the ASCII characters 0046h, 0053h, and 0033h in sequential order will result in you being trampled by FreeSpace fan boys. If you go in the Vasudan section of the station and find a box labelled “Headz”, please don’t open it. Thank you and enjoy your stay!

As you were, gentlemen. :D

<do you know that only the kill goes to the first member that welcomes a newbie?>

Oh God. See that sentence right there? That's encapsulates exactly what pisses me off about the welcome speech these days. FFS, it was funny five or six years ago, when you knew what all the jokes meant. But you don't, and you never did, and now you're keeping count. Just stop. Seriously. Nobody cares. It's nice for the newbies maybe, but it's not a competition. ****ing hell.

Anyway, new guy. We're not normally ranty *****es like I've just been. We solve problems and mod a little and... stuff. We're... nice.

It's the beam/speech thing that makes this community so welcoming, sure there are in-jokes in the speech, but if you are here long enough, you get to learn these in-jokes. It also evolves over time as another newb takes up the mantle to welcome other newer newbs and more community in jokes are added. the :v: gods, Carl and hyper intelligent shade of blue are all part of the tradition, the newer the newb, the younger the community in joke is!

Yes. I've actually talked to the real Carl.

I don't use the welcome beam anymore. I post enough already.

However, I was the one that once set up the Official Shivan Fan Club.

Nah, you needed to have been here for this (http://web.archive.org/web/20010308090656/vbb.volition-inc.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001723.html) to fully get it, and there are probably less than ten people still left from those days. :p

Actually it mainly seems to be there for people to inflate their post count without actually providing anything of value to the thread.

It used to be that the first person who actually had something useful to say would give the welcome beam but now people are fighting to give the beam as if that somehow makes them part of the community. It doesn't. When I used to use the beam it was almost always after answering the question. Hell I probably still have the highest beam count even though I haven't done it for years because of the sheer number of times I was the first person to answer a newbies questions or solve their problems. I gave up on the beaming when it became less about saying welcome to the new guy and more about trying to be the first to give the beam.

If you notice the people who actually have been here the longest don't even bother with the beam let alone the speech. Some say it's cynicism but I suspect it's more the fact that it's a joke that has been said once too often and has now become old and boring.

The welcome speech is about two years past it's best before date. Someone should just take it out back and dispose of it. It's started to smell.

The beam is fine with me as long as it's realised what the point of the beam actually is. It's not for self aggrandisement. If you have nothing to say except welcome, you probably shouldn't be posting at all (Except possibly on threads like this one where no actual question was asked).

Anyway getting back to fastcasters and his original post, welcome to the community. Ignore the bickering. Let's face it, there are worse things that finding that people are arguing over the best way to try to make new people comfortable when they first join :)

Post by: G0atmaster on May 11, 2007, 02:29:40 pm
So far I've only beamed one person, and I kinda made a joke about it because other members are so ravenous about being the first to welcome someone.  I don't do it to inflate my post count, I don't care about my post count to be honest.  I do think it's kinda fun, though, to have something of "beaming races".
Title: Re: Impressed
Post by: karajorma on May 11, 2007, 03:55:09 pm
The problem with beaming races is that you then have 5 posts based around "Ha! I beat you again" "But I'll beat you next time"

Welcoming people is fine but if you're racing to be the first to beam someone first then it's nothing to do with welcoming new people and everything to do with trying to beat the other people in the forum who participate in the races. At which point the beam becomes largely pointless.
Title: Re: Impressed
Post by: Snail on May 11, 2007, 04:12:46 pm
Well most of the people I've beamed (only five or six actually) weren't asking questions, they were just popping by to say "glad to see you're still alive." Just like this thread.
Title: Re: Impressed
Post by: Mobius on May 11, 2007, 05:56:19 pm
Some members I beamed were looking for answers. I either posted "Well, maybe...etc etc" or "Sorry, I can't help you" or something similar.

Title: Re: Impressed

Carl once said he owned a Shivan-related domain name or something and it stuck, or something (I don't really know). I have no idea what's up with the hyper intelligent shade of blue though.
Title: Re: Impressed
Post by: Unknown Target on May 12, 2007, 09:13:07 am
I was just throwing that out there as an example :) Pretty much everything Kara said is right - the beam isn't what "makes this community so warm and welcoming" - it used to, yea, back when we only used it like once per thread, and then combine the beam post with something useful. Now, I go into threads that have 10 replies and find that 5 of them are beam posts, and the other 5 are the beamers talking about their "kill counts". In case you haven't noticed, this whole "kill count" is a new thing, and it's actually really, really annoying - to a lot of people.

If you're going to welcome somebody, welcome them and answer their questions. Don't just beam them and expect someone else to come in and tell them what they actually came here to learn.

IMO, the way the welcome beam is being abused now is like taking an old family joke, going out and telling it to everyone you can find, then posting it on the internet, and then using it every time you talk to a family member before you start a conversation.

As an aside, I'd like to admit that some of the jokes in the Welcome speech were even before my time, but I know that they extend beyond the speech, and I don't try and use them to seem more "in" when I don't know what they really mean.

Hmm, I have a beef with waiting to welcome a newcomer until someone shows up that can answer their questions.  I would think it would be best to beam them, give them the welcome speech, and say that someone will be with them soon to help with their problem, and you're sorry you can't help.  That way, they at least feel welcome while they're waiting.  Because sometimes they have to wait for a while.  Also, when someone does answer their question, half the time they don't welcome the newcomer.  IDK, I thought the beam was for welcoming new ppl... that's the way I've always seen it used... I thought it was really neat when I first started lurking here.  But, yeah, blathering about kill counts and complaining (even jokingly) about not beaming someone first is quite tasteless.

Answering someone's question is enough IMO, you don't need to beam them and start screaming about "welcome to the community". They came here to get a question answered, not have a green graphic shoved in their face. Afterwards, they might stay if they see the community is mature enough (which they're unlikely to get given the current state of affairs).

Yeah, they might have to wait until all the whining about the beaming stops...

Quit bein' a baby :P

Yes, beaming is not exactly... "cool".

A long-time board member continually whining about how lame it is, and how lame the noobs are that do it?

Unbelievably lame.

Just drop it, man.  It's not making your case, believe me.  This is the intarwebs, for the love of Pete.

The beam is nice, but the speech can be dispensed with. As others have said, the jokes are lost on 99% of the people here, and the remaining 1% have seen them so many times that they aren't funny anymore. I tend to just scroll down past those posts when I see the beam.
