The image shows a GTVA destroyer finishing of an NTF Orion. There are still a few imperfections, but as a whole, not to shabby. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
The image is in 1280x1024 resolution.
Quality trade-off for 56kers (~118 kb) (//"http://w1.520.telia.com/~u52019065/Kaboom1280LQ.jpg")
And the good one(484 kb) (//"http://w1.520.telia.com/~u52019065/Kaboom1280HQ.jpg")a bit large isn't it?
It was made in MAX completely.
A Noise map for the starfield
2 Directional lights with Volume Light for the beam.
A fairly bad fire-effect for the beam impact, as well as a particle spray (barely visible).
A squashed donut shape for for the shockwave with Motion Blur applied.
And a Depth of Field effect.

Work on the beam and the explosion effects. Otherwise, great stuff!

Hey that looks good!!! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
My problem is that the explosion is green...is it supposed to be that way or is that just my computer acting like it had too much to drink watching the Super Bowl last night?
really good other than that and I especially like the beam

Beam and explosion need work, otherwise nice!

See? what do I know? I said I liked the beam...oh well they agreed with me about the explosions.

the explosion looks like the destroyer is growing mold, the beam isn't bad

at least someone agrees with me on the beam
now that you mention it...the destroyer kinda does look like its been sitting out waaaaaaaaay too long (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I'll have to agree, but otherwise good job (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

You guys've gotta give rendering a real go, and then you won't be complaining about the explosion and the beam, you'll be praising it. Especially for something completely done in MAX - no touching up whatsoever!
Ryx, great work here. I'm particularly impressed with the depth-blurring you've put onto the out-of-focus Hecate. The beam, while not very FS-ey, is a very nice beam - the effect is pretty darn nice.
The explosions, also, while not particularly realistic, are not easy to make. My hat off to you - very well accomplished, and markedly better than some of my earlier attempts on ship explosions. Keep at it. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
And that shockwave... well, that's friggin' beautiful. I still haven't got shockwaves pinned down, to this day. The best I can muster up is something like this:
But, heh, don't mind that. Nice planet and starfield, too - they really fill up the pic, nice work. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
I've got one big suggestion for you, which will change the face of the picture, and it's all about light (shadow also, but not so much in this pic).
The main reason any picture will shy away from realism is because of light. There's not enough of it (rarely have I seen too much light around here - I'd rather have too much than too little). Those explosions should have light auras - try to figure something out with MAX. The beam should also be washing the view with green, because a beam of that size isn't any little thing - it should have a forebearing effect on the entire image. (Light bleeding from the beam in front of the Hecate would be cool, but not necessary, and quite a difficult technique to master).
So, go overboard on the lighting. Because if you go overboard, you'll tend to get it just right. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
(If you really do go overboard, don't worry, we'll tell you... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/cool.gif) )

Thanx! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
While i'm still not certain about the lighting, i do think it turned out rather well. If i had choden another angle with the full Hecate in view for instance, than the light setup i have in place now, would be totally inadequate.
The explosion, i think, turned out well too. It's not an ani, after all.
I will most likely not fix this render, because it took ~1.5 h to render. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

I think the beam looks great... at least until it passes through the Orion. It should look exactly the same on the other side. The shockwave is excellent. The explosions aren't too bad in principle... but they lack a couple of things, most importantly color variety and depth. They should range the full color scale from blinding white to dim red(or maybe blue) And should be focused on the point of beam impact, instead of that part of the ship being the only part not covered in explosion.
And, like Setekh said, more light! Cast a pool of green light on the ship's hull where it's getting beamed, maybe another one facing the beam fire point with a quick falloff that would add a subtle touch to the Hecate's hull.
The planet and stars look excellent, by the way.
I think it would also be a nice touch if the Orion were more broken up, as you would expect it to be by the time the shockwave had gone that far. Maybe break it in half, and bend both halves into a slight V-shape with the apex right where the beam is hitting.
I dunno, I don't render, I just critique. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) At any rate, excellent work indeed!

Hey, I have! I just can't get any webspace (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/mad.gif) , not to mention that I've never even done any web design.
Soon as I learn, I'll post a render.

Aw... poor Steak! He can't do it at all! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
I really wish I could upload that animation, show MY ugly shockwave... it does look FreeSpacey, and it has all sorts of cool fragmenty bits, but it's... well... not half as cool as these.
