Eight threads in here that've been posted in today.

Back in the day, there'd've been like 3 pages worth of active threads.

POST MORE!

And unban Stryke and others.

A ton of people bailed for Warpstorm when they (meaning the admin staff here) went all faggy about admining the place.

No flaming, no arguments, no science-v-religion, no berating others for having the intelligence of a retarded ant that's just been hit in the head with an ant-sized anvil....

I told them they just had to be a little stricter in regards to locking, but they decided they must implement Drastic Changes™.

Again, boo-hoo. Deal with it.

Having it split into the Meeting Hall and Pub might have made a difference too.

You see, the problem is not even the admins or the meeting hall, its the fact that the world isnt doing its part, things are too good at the moment, you know? Now if the world were to go up in flames and wars and chaos suddenly went up everywhere, you'd be seeing HLP back to normal.

It does seem like people are posting in the same few threads, not really creating any new ones recently. Barring these two.

No, it's a perfectly legitimate topic of discussion that you're trying to derail. Douche.

Anyway, IMO the "Meeting Hall" should be open to everyone, and just heavily moderated to keep the spammers and nubs out.

Is there any concrete point to this?

If people want to post, they're welcome to. Our boundaries for content of posts are nothing unusual for a site that's looking to keep things clean and enjoyable for a majority as opposed to some smaller communities that aren't so bothered with controlling needless flaming and idiocy.

If you really want flame wars an0n, you know you have your own forums for that. Vega, feel free to join him if you have such a tough time here.

In the mean time though, the admins are all very busy but are looking to make changes (yep, Drastic Changes) to the way things work though. I've said all along that that won't happen overnight.

The long and short of it though, is that if you want conversation then go ahead and start one.

Then can you remove this subtitle under my nickname? because one of your admins pushed their joke too far. please :D.

i agree this is just a spam thread with no relevent base to build on.

I somewhat agree with an0n on this.

I think it is unnecessary to create artifical limits like no debating/arguments, it really takes a spirit away from fun of posting. Arguments and debates are part of everyday life, only the scale differs. I don't really see any point in having a separate board for debates as it doesn't even get used enough to warrant its own existence, it doesn't have even 20 topics and last post was made almost two weeks ago. Only three topics have posts made this month. Had it been any other board, it would have been merged back to its original board by now.

We already had civilized rules set here before this stupid board re-arrangement. I disagree with an0n on the point that we should allow people to be able to insult others. No flaming and no insults, that's the line where civilized debates and arguments become uncivilized.

This board doesn't count posts, at first I was against it but since this board draws in countless of pointless topics that won't get closed as per the set rules, I've found it to be a good change. But I say that this is as far as we need to go as long as moderation works as it should.

If general discussion board has to be split, it would make much more sense to have boards for Technology & Science and for Computer Hardware & Software. If that would happen, then I wouldn't have to even read general discussion board anymore. :p

The day when Kalfireth finally has enough time to review all the input he gathered earlier in the two topics can't come too soon.

Ahh but therein lies the problem.

This week I have one coursework deadline, next week I have two more. The week after that I have an exam and that marks the end of this semester at Uni. There's more where that came from but that's a tiny taste. I am busy. So sadly I can't sort through the results until June. But I will.

Title: Re: I Remember....

/me sits banging his head against the wall

The problem is too much micro-management and categorization of subjects.

If you have one board for say Science and one for Technology (just as an example) you lose the topics that are an interplay of both because even mild confusion as to where the thread about the middle-ground thing should go and what is allowed in it is going to cause people not to post.

Title: Re: I Remember....
Post by: Flipside on May 16, 2007, 03:46:34 pm
That's the Rose Tinted Glasses effect though, objects in the rear-viwe mirror and all that. I don't think things were better, only different. before the Source Code Project really started to take off and breathe life back into Freespace, this board was a brown dwarf, a collection of people sitting around waiting for a game to vanish. I know it sounds cruel to put it like that, but, most games end up relegated to a little specialist Forum in the corner of the Interweb after a few years.

Thing about boards that are going through a 'Brown Dwarf' stage is that it's a pretty close knit, tongue in cheek community, everyone knows each other, and they are comforable taking the rise out of each other, however, newbs get ganged up on in many cases.

HLP is changing, that's true, but it's becoming a more high-profile thing, the SCP and its Mods get a lot of attention for it, and the community is growing, despite what people may have said. So what you end up with is somewhat closed community suddenly having to cope with becoming an open one, which is never easy :)

So ends todays evaluation ;)

Finally, a semi-intelligent analysis by a moderator. However, I fail to see why our higher profile necessitates and end to the old spirit of this place.

Give it time, we've already featured in several publications, Once the big mods are 100% and released i think we'll see a lot more traffic, and with it a lot more campaign/mod development.

I find it funny that Warpstorm, with fewer members, is far more active than HLP. I'm rather disappointed, to be quite honest.

Yep. I don't know if you're realised this, but when you log into HLP, the board reaches out of your monitor and smacks you upside the head.
Title: Re: I Remember....
Post by: Bobboau on May 21, 2007, 07:45:17 am
well it certainly has everything usefully split up all over the place, it's sort of like the qwerty layout in how everything you want is no were near each other so you need to do all sorts of ninja gymnastics to get to anything. but it's been made clear that we are not to speak of this so you may continue to ignore the problem, and I'll continue to use the board less.

Don't add Gasoline Mefustae :p

I don't think anyone has a problem with complaints about board functionality, it does seem to me that a leap of faith needs to be made with regards to the SCP and this boards' focus, but it's not my site and that is for the Admins to decide.
Title: Re: I Remember....
Post by: Fineus on May 21, 2007, 11:16:10 am
Meh, in that case I'd like to point out that we have collected a load of feedback with regards to improving HLP as a whole as well as improving the forums.

But as I've also said, I'm very busy with coursework (two deadlines this week, for instance) and the rest of the admins are also busy.

The problem isn't being ignored, not "not spoken of" and we're not sweeping anything under the carpet. However if you have patience, changes will be made and - assuming you got involved with the feedback we collected earlier this year - you should hopefully see the improvements you want.

Just change the forum order.

General, random chat should always be at the top. It's helpful for newbs, and since it (in theory) recieves the most activity it should be in a non-scrolling place.

I haven't been here very long, but yeah... things are relatively dead. For me, it's not so much the new forums as much as a lack of intrest. Hopefully it's temporary.

So many things though, just drop out of life, after a while, and sometimes, you don't come back. This is a great board, supporting a great game, but for now, I just can't seem to bring myself to care that much  :sigh:

Hopefully a friendlier layout and a lot more of those things people wanted done will entice people to be more active here.

But I guess it's true that as time goes by, people move on to other things.. lose interest in a game or have real life commitments to keep to. That can't be helped.

"well you haven't done much useful lately so go then!"

yeah, well thought out.

anyway, I suggested when this first happened that you simply revert the changes back to what had been working while you figure out a more long term solution. and all I got was "WE ARE THE ADMINS. WE HAVE DECIDED. WE WILL NOT YIELD TO THE LIKES OF YOU!".

I am sort of curious as to what has happened to the traffic on this site since everyone realized this was going to stay for a while.
