It's an anime, don't feel stupid (although it   is awfully popular/famous)  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Kamikaze, you may not be aware of this, but anime is one tenth as popular in the states, so we don't hear as much about these things.

I know, know just a joke (notice the OT in the topic line that I added in the last second) but all of you who haven't watched Love Hina should anyway  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

Not.

What's important is execution not the concept.

Very few anime manage to rise above their cliched concept. The exception to this, of course, is the anime that establish the cliches (like the original Mobile Suit Gundam, or Urusei Yatsura).

Speaking of anime, whatever happened to the studios that did Detonator Orgunn and Hades Project Zeorymer?

Whilst I'm asking questions, where in Japan do you live Kamikaze? Wherever it is, I demand you go to a ramen shop and get a big bowl of miso ramen and three plates of gyoza so that I may experience my favorite foods vicariously through you.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) I miss Japan.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

Indeed, but many animes brought old concepts no new scales ( Escaflowne, Tenchi Muyo, Evangelion etc) After all, for exemple, Return to castle wolfeinstein is a cliche by itself, but I won't criticize it, coz it's beter done than the first Doom like ever ( which is... castle Wolfeinstein lol -I know, I know, there was a few other obscure FPS at the same period, but who DID play them?- )

I'm not going to talk about video games at all. They are a mixed bag. Anime on the other hand is much clearer, in my opinion.

I would agree with you that Escaflowne, for example, takes an old idea and excels at it. It 'rises above' the cliche. But for every Escaflowne, there's several hundred Evangelions. Evangelion only rose above the rest of the anime world in sheer crap factor: Poor editting, poor writing, cel-reuse on a scale never before imagined, poor direction... In fact the only thing it did have going for it was the visual design. It failed, however to 'rise above' the cliche of giant robot crap.

I don't agree for evangelion. Sure, they make overuse of some cells, but I like the script ( ok, I admit I'm the only one I know who liked the end, but hey, I'm a twisted mind). And rah, they aren't robots damnit! sorry, I had to say it.
For anime being mostly crap, from my own experience, it's wrong, but I guess that in reality you're right. japanes makes so many different series, OVA etc, that there must be a lot of things to trash. Anyway, down here ( in France), we get to see mostly the most popular ones ( Tho it's not always true, things like Harlock aren't world wide known, and Goldorak or the Mysterious Cities of gold aren't even well known in Japan). So i guess french have an idealized vision of animes, that may not be true ( and it's also true for other countries I guess). Anyway, as we don't have the crap down here, I won't complain, and yeppe, in France, whatever you can say, we have almost only great animes, so animes does rule  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

The US gets rather heavily filtered doses of anime as well. Only the best of the mostly bad crop makes it over here. That doesn't mean that anime rules, it means that good anime rules and that most of it is still crap.

Now, I've never heard of Goldorak, but I can say that Mysterious Cities of Gold are absolutely awesome. Better, by far than most of the anime that came out of japan during the same era.

and I can't say I'm a big fan of anime. I've only heard of the few wildly popular ones here in the states

Incorrect. Theodore Sturgeon actually said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud."

Unfortunately, in my experience, the amount of art out there in the me-too world of anime approaches 0% 99.9% of it is crap. I form this opinion from careful and systematic study of japanese television over a period of several years. Other countries get the best of the bad lot. Sometimes, the worst stuff (like evangelion, which merchandized well) escapes too.

Well yes most anime is crap (example: pokemon  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)) but opinions differ so... (notice that some like evangelion but some don't)

But Love Hina is quite entertaining, I won't say it's perfect but I enjoyed it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Yes, I know that. Irrelevant. Despite its off-the-cuff origin, "Sturgeon's Law ("http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/jargon/html/entry/Sturgeon's-Law.html")" exists now as I originally stated it.
