Title: Playing FS2 for the first time, about to try the SCP as well
Post by: msummers80 on May 25, 2007, 12:21:53 pm
Hey Free Space fans,
Thought I'd say hi before I start posting questions this weekend, when I try to setup the the SCP stuff.  I have to say, I am very impressed.  I installed the game a few days ago for the first time on my computer, and it was pretty fun going through the training missions, although I did have some hell trying to get an old sound card set up just to use the MIDI with my old sidewinder 3d (it got me through the first freespace).  I thought the graphics looked pretty decent, but anything I would have faulted the game on has been addressed by this community, and more!

Let me ask at least one question now.  I have a nvidea 6800 series card with 128 mb ram, 1gb ram on the system, and an athlon 3200+.  Should that be enough to run the modded game (like when I use Turey's installer) on the highest settings at the highest resolutions?  I ask because I noticed as I played a mission last night (the 5th) which was the first with some serious activity my frame rates seemed to be dropping.  I haven't really troubleshot the issue yet, and I probably wont until I setup the CSP, but I just wanted to see what experiences people had trying to run this game with all the settings maxed out.

Well, I'm excited to have a little new variety in my gaming.  I forgot how challenging it is to aim and control fire with a joystick.  Maybe I'll even play FS1, with the port, again.

You should be able to run it just fine. :)

Welcome to the community.

Wow!  It looks awesome, and plays better than the original FS2.  Go figure.  Nice work guys.  I never figured out why my machine slowed to crap playing FS2 from the retail install, but you definitely have squeezed a lot better performance out of this game.  Just one noob question, I figured out how to launch the mods, is there one I should play before FSport that comes in the FSOpen installer Turey made?  Oh, and a general question, is the silent threat campaign included in the FSport?

Yep, it's included, and worked clean as a whistle for me.

If you ran the FSOpenInstaller with all options on, you'll also have a ton of user made classics. Some of these are every bit as satisfying as the retail and expansion campaigns (and the Derelict remake is in the running for the best of the bunch).

I've been having a ball playing through the campaigns, including the community ones, in chronological order :-)
