Hello fellow Pilots ;)
first it is really nice to be in this great active forum concerned with nothing but freespace
i have downloaded freespace 2 from HotU the 600 MB version
used the online installer to download SCP files
added some files to the game folder and i had the game running
i have downloaded 3 campaigns sync,home sick,derelict
sync worked fine until i lost in the first mission and i did not play it again because i do not like the nebula
home sick the game crashed a short while after the attach starts
derelict crashed shortly after destroying the cargo
first i thought it was a problem with the campaign to stop in the same place more than once but happening again with another campaign made me change my mind
i am running windows XP
2.4 GHz
32 MB graphics card
256 MB RAM
i did not download the graphics extras like media vp packs and such stuff because my card does not support Open GL
the launcher is version 5.5a and the game is version 3.6.9
i hope i have provided enough information
and once again i am glad to be here with you

:welcome:
The HOTU download is missing some stuff. I don't think any of it would affect user-made campaigns though...
I urge you to give Sync another chance. That is one of the top user-mades out there. Once you get used to it, the nebulas aren't bad. They aren't very prevalent in Sync until the latter half anyway.
I can't say about Homesick, but did you make sure you got Blaise Russel's updated version of Derelict rather than the original(and non-SCP) version? If not, you can download it here (http://hades-combine.com/web/index.php?ind=downloads&op=entry_view&iden=302).
Also, you're sure you installed everything correctly? Given that the campaigns started at all, it sounds like you did... but just to make sure: you installed them as instructed here? (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/installingmods.html)
We're glad you're here too. Welcome.

Thank you Dark Hunter,
every thing i install using the online installer and i do not know what version I just copy it to the freespace folder and add a mod using the launcher
but i noticed something on the oracle page that it is strongly discouraged to use Direct 3D and i am using it because my card does not support open GL could that be the problem
and one more thing,
yesterday after freespace crashed i found the low virtual memory icon on the taskbar.
I hope that would help

Bumping your RAM up to 512 and grabbing a medium-cost nVidia graphics card should solve many of your porblems. If that's not an option, just try bumping your virtual memory to 4GB.

Aggazza: well like he said "bumping" up the Virtual Ram will help
:if u have another HDD other than the one with your operating system
:use that one
:And if possible upgrade to a better config
:
:256MB RAM, Pathetic
:32 MB , IS THAT EVEN POSSIABLE
:take my advice to upgrade

may be you won't believe it but the other game i am playing is GTA 2 which can run on even slower machines may be computers from the stone age era :D
i have been away from the games world for too long (a Linux user:))and i didn't care about any upgrades as long as my computer is running what i need without any crashes or delays
but for the last two weeks i have been thinking of the upgrade (back to gaming business) but never took the decision i will tell you the results after i buy a new card
i was not offended i just smiled because i knew that would happen
thank you for your replies and Turey thank you for the online installer you really help making life much easier
PS: my graphics card is built-in so i guess it IS possible :)

The reason Karajorma says not to use D3D is because it is not supported by more recent versions of the SCP. Ergo, some of the enhanced graphics features won't function properly. For now, D3D should still work, just not nearly as well as OpenGL. I highly reccomend getting OpenGL support, as I heard D3D support may be dropped entirely in the near future.

:hopping: DOWN WITH D3E!!!!
Edit: D3D sorry :P

My D3D doesn't work, so Open GL!!
BTW GL 1.1 is free, is version 2.0 better or something?

all openGL is free (software anyway)
However, not all vid cards support it. Same with DirectX.
