Opinions about beer are as numerous as the different brands. You need to to experiment yourself and find one that suits you. But don't do it in one night because the results won't be reliable for various reasons. I've worked quite a bit in a small store which, during summers, makes considerable income from selling beer and other refreshments for sweating city folk on vacation. I have observed considerable difference in what people like to drink based on age, region of origin and any cultural alignment I can see. Fortunately the small store I occasionally work in has a relatively wide selection of beverages so I have had the pleasure to try out different beers myself. There have been quite a few surprises. Some taste divine, some were horrible.
So you would do well to do your own explorations.

Other than advice (which you should listen), I can offer little direct suggestions as I live in the other side of the world. I imagine there is little similarities in our beer selections...

And a quick note. "Normal beer" is quite a broad concept. Here we have a few brands which can be considered "normal" but they taste very different. Yet those less used brands also have different in taste.

Walk into store and buy random beers? That's how you start it anyways, there are like twenty zillion different types and brands of beer, ales and lagers and weissbiers and rauchbiers and bitters and dark beers and pils and so on.

Not completely randomly. First you should know what you are after. You want some of that thick dark tar like stuff, or some of that bright piss like stuff that looks like yellow water.

The appearance of the bottle/can often gives a hint of what you might expect to be inside. Though sometimes it's just fun to close your eyes and let fate decide. Or if you happen to be in a well stocked bar and there a competent person behind the counter you can ask him to give something he thinks is "special".

I remember this one time I was somewhere, I can't remember the city. In a bar, can't remember the which bar. I think it was a school trip of some sort. Any way we still had marks. I was running low on money and it was late. I wanted one last drink so I went to the counter and there was this young looking chick, I think she was pretty too, and I slammed my few remaining marks on the desk and asked her to give me something. She thought for a moment and then gave something for me. I had never seen that particular brand of beer before. And let me tell you, it tasted good. Unfortunately I have also forgotten what was that majestic beverage the friendly, probably pretty, girl gave me. :(

Anyway. The moral of the story is that when you find a good beer brand write it down!

I rather like German beers, they tend to taste crisper for some reason. I'm rather partial to Forst lager.

Hey I'm serious about wanting those suggestions.  :p

I can drink about anything, but I like a beer that's more crisp and is good with food.  Almost every time I'm drinking I'm cooking out too so getting along great with food is a must.

Dont know if you could get Tuborg (Danish I think) in the US and then you have a pretty good Thai beer Singha, other than that I would go for german beer or czech beer thats almost always a safe bet aswell as british or Irish beer.

Also have Foster(Austrailian i think) thats pretty good tasting if I remeber correctly.

Also dont ask me precicly what they all taste since its been a few years since I drank any Alcohol.

For good beer, you can always depend on mickey's (it comes in 40's and comes in 6 and 12 pack wide mouth bottles), it's so much better than the staple beer of mgd, heineken, busch, and so on. Another beer you might like and is my favorite is guinness, it's dark stuff, a little bitter, but i think you'll like it a lot the first time you have it, it's also very smooth textured. Another beer you might like is pyramid apricot ale, it tastes like an average ale, except with the tiniest hint of apricot, takes some getting used to but it's pretty delicious stuff.

If you really want to experiment with some beer, you should try buying some really good sweet beer, that stuff is awesome as well, though i don't know the kind of sweet beer i had last as people were pouring me cups of it and never saw the label. As far as getting stuff in america goes, you can get all the beer i mentioned in about any liquor store. But, one thing you're definitely not getting which i highly recommend is the alaskan brand of beer that is up here, it's good, and has so many varieties and it's good beer from the biggest state in the union ;) I'm a hard alcohol guy, but i'm getting away from alcohol a bit in my own way and that made my inclination turn toward beer, and i think with the stuff i had it's damn good.

Of course with beer, stay away from the nasty staple beers you mentioned, stay away from steel reserve (oh god no), and stay away from ESB (extra special bitter), ESB just makes good beer worse. I'll go for ESB when i bite into a pine tree.

....i've heard good stuff about fosters......

well i usually get the locally brewed alaskan beer (seriousluy i can see the brewery out my bedroom window) even though its more expensive than imported beers. corona is good too. i also like st paulie girl or killians irish red if i can find it. guinness of course but i perfer the stout from alaska brewing instead.

Only hard liquor I like is homemade wine, moonshine, and rum when I can get it.

The homemade wine I usually get smells like rubbing alcohol.

Rum, vodka, and jose cuervo black medallion are my choices ;)
Damn, Nuke is from juneau, i'm from sitka man :D You guys are making me want to drink tonight, and i don't have much money...i'll see if i can shake the urge, or see if my older bro wants to get something too.

UUUuuugggh, eww, i can't stand wine. I mean have you tried drinking fresh grape juice before? Like welches? Wine just reminds me of grape juice right off the bat until it gets nasty :ick:

so thats why the blip on southeast is so big. :D

for hard **** i like jose cuervo classico, grand marneir, and 100 proof southern comfort. but i dont drink very much theese days, at most a beer after work from time to time.

Lol, actually the blip on the interior for me. I had southern comfort, good licqueur. Had some wild turkey only because my friend kept barging me to have bunch...eww. Jose cuervo classico, only good for salt and lime shots, buy itself it reminds me heavily of pine sol, that's why i turned to the black medallion

i find the classico has somewhat of a sweet taste to it, while the gold and black both have that kick you in the ass feel to them. while the later 2 make better margaritas, i still prefer the classico as the one most preferable to shoot.

I'd rather shoot wild turkey than jose cuervo classico :arrr: I'll throw down some money and try some margaritas with it though.

EDIT:
Jose cuervo classico margaritas i meant, not wild turkey margaritas (these should never exist as it would be some nasty ****)

Hmm. I'm not going to give you any brands, but how about some dark bitters or pale ales? Do you want something bitter with a good bite or something heavy and sweet? You should really just try, I like exotic beers and I find new good beers every time I go into a bar. Specialities are nice, but I settle for more casual marks too; I quite enjoy Hoegaarden for its nice, semibitter taste and rather affordable price (you cannot really drink speciality beers all evening, it will cost and finally you'll be drunk and could just as well drink cheap bulk lagers).

Edit: For alcohol, I prefer Calvados. Tastes excellent, warms nicely and divides opinions so that you don't have to share the bottle with so many people. Also speciality bonus.

lol. Jose isn't *that* bad. My friends and I held a Cinco de Mayo party, and we suggested that people bring their taste of tequila. Just about everyone brought Jose, and we went through it all. How much? Something in the area of fourteen(!!!!) bottles. Made a ****load of margaritas, yeah, but it was mostly from people doing shots. And wild turkey = nastiest **** ever. First time I shot that I ****ing gagged.

As for beers, well you can't go wrong with a good Guinness. I also enjoy a Killians Red here and there. Shinerbock is also very good. There are also a few locals beers that, if you have them in your area, I strongly suggest trying. Summit (http://www.summitbrewing.com/home.php), Schnell (http://www.schellsbrewery.com/), and Leinenkugel (http://www.leinie.com/).

Yeah i've had enough wild turkey to still not like the taste, but not mind it so much. I only go for wild turkey if my friend who likes it is drinking it as well. Nastiest **** i ever had was jim beam. OH **** NO...JIM BEAM'S LEGACY CAN SUCK MY DICK :ick:
