Title: FreeSpace 2 on International Movie Data Base...
Post by: Mustang19 on May 29, 2007, 03:11:56 pm
Freespace 2 on IMDB

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0289708/combined

Robert Loggia- Admiral Petrarch. Starred in GTA 3, appearances in The Sopranos, Malcolm in the Middle, Fraiser... directed two epsidoes of Magnum PI!

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005162/

Ronny Cox- Admiral Bosch. Appeared in Desperate Housewives, Medium, 11 episodes of Stargate.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001074/

Jason Scott- guess who. Only voiceacted in FreeSpace 2, unfortunately.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1547748/

The list goes on, with the miscelaneous characters of FreeSpace. Can't find the Beta wing girl, although there are two women on the IMBD list. Many of the people who voiceacted for FS2 were apparently professional actors, and a few where directors, too. It really surprises me. Before today I thought that [V] just took a few programmers, the janitor, and a few people from Help Wanted adds and pooled them to do the voiceacting. But looks like FS2 had some professional actors.

Only one voiceacting credit for FS1, though: Duncan McPherson, training instructor. But he was a damn good instructor voice.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1774684/

And hey, memorable quotes from FS1:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169922/quotes

Quote
Memorable quotes for
Freespace (1998) (VG)
communicates
Alpha 2: GTI Vessels, power down and surrender.
Jotunheim: Negative. You have no authority in this system. If you do not break off your attack, we will open fire.
Command: Destroy GTI Base Jotunheim.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Command: Oh my God! It's the Lucifer!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wingman: Protect the Bastion!

And for FS2, only one quote, amazingly. And it's the quote that everyone says is great but I can't stand it.

Quote
Pilot (Rick Weiss): Why did we attack the Iceni? Why did we destroy that cargo? I can live with being a pawn if the game makes sense!

Hey, what a find!

OMG, I watch Stargate and That 70's Show all the time! I can't beleive I never noticed that the actors voiced on Freespace 2.

Well, it was only one 70s Show episode and 11 Stargate episodes. Of course you're not going to notice them. But the point is that Volition bothered to hire professional voice actors for the game. I had no idea.

Why is it that we get posts like this a couple of times a year with everyone thinking that they are the first person to spot this? :D

I'm not quite sure why it's so surprising that they hired professional voice actors, most games do.

I never thought FS2 had people so widely spread and so many, but then again, big game producer - why not?

What's even more surprising is that IMDB finally corrected their entry to show Jason Scott as the voice of Snipes. :)

But those are all for FS2.  I don't think they hired any "big names" for FS1.  The guys they did use for FS1 were still pretty good, though.

Most people would probably best recognize Robert Loggia from his role as General Grey in Independence Day.  To this day, I can't watch that movie without expecting his character to mention something about Shivans. :p

Well, shows how much I know about video game industry. But it's odd that Derelict, BWO, etc. have such good quality acting if you say that most games hire professionals. Although I can tell that there are a few campaigns lacking really good actors, like BRShivans (whatever that's supposed to stand for, no offense to anyone who who acted for the campaign, especially that Asian-sounding briefing guy who's appeared in several campaigns but I don't know who he is... maybe Karajorma?)

edit: And yes, every topic on Earth has already discussed, but now the IMDB link is on the FS Wiki (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Voice_Acting_Credits%28FS2%29)! Finally!

Well, unless you count the Colossus cutscene, in which case, it would be every That 70s Show episode--the voiceactor for that cutscene was Kurtwood Smith (Red Forman). :)

It allows others who have no clue to share in that knowledge.  (ie, me & others that don't know everything under the sun)

Something that greatly attributed to FS2 IMO was the quality and depth of the voice acting. When the last survivor of Kappa wing emerged, warning the GTVA to get back and shut down the portal, and for command to classify the whole thing 'level phi', it certainly put a shiver down my spine.

Adminral Petrach had an authorative, yet fatherly and all knowing sound about it. Something that made want to pilot all the more vigorously and harder just because hes telling you whats at stake.

The C.O of the Colossus had a sound in his voice that you couldn't help but smile when he came into the field of battle. If there is any definition of 'the cavalry arriving' , its the GTVA Colossus warping in from subspace and putting 4 beam cannon holes through the NTCv Hawkwood.

And as for 'command', well it was always there....not. It was there to say 'help is on the way', when it came too late. To tell you your mission, to shut up that pilot who was irritating you, and to give you that health warning

"Those cruisers have anti-fighter beams with an effective range of 1500 metres. Lure the escort AWAY from the cruisers BEFORE you engage." Certainly some healthy advice.

And Snipes....well, possibly one of the best.

All in all, I think you'd all agree that voice acting contributed much to the success of FS2. Unfortunately , space-sims never had a great appeal to many. If a company took up the rights to make a FS3 , and made it, well, i think it'd sell much better now then it FS2 did.

But then again, its all IMO.  :pimp:

There's nothing wrong with people sharing that knowledge or acting surprised when they find out. What I was commenting on is the fact that they always act like no one else could possibly have found this information out in the 8 years FS2 has been out. :)

FS3 would either sell like FS1 and FS2, or it would be lowest-common-denominatorized and would suck.

How good FreeSpace 3 would sell depends on how popular space sims are. Space games have become increasingly popular lately, so...

Hmmm, The classic x-wing style shooters or SCS (space combat simulators) are less prominant i feel, most of the games out now are X style, all micro managey in my eyes, the last good'ish since the FS series was starlancer, Freelancer was graphically nice, but the mouse control did my nut. The plot was too " :doubt:" as well.

Freelancer could have been good.

Key words: could have

Yes, I notice that pilots that said "Get me outta here command!" always died.
