Title: Installing WC1 Deluxe with DosBox
Post by: Scooby_Doo on May 30, 2007, 12:43:05 am
How do you install Wing Commander 1 Deluxe cd (with secret missions 1 and 2)? It complains it needs Dos 3.3 or above to install.  The installation method is slightly different than those posted on CIC.

Bleh, WC3 crashes Dosbox when i try to install it.

Can't offer much help, I've never played either game. But I believe WC3 was made for Windows.

My advice: Go to your local thrift store and buy a $10 Win95.

Hrmm...  I have not noticed a lot of problems when using DosBox and WC1.  The latest DosBox has a lot more automatic settings, but I can't seem to get the sound working for that one.

Could you post the link to the instructions you are talking about?  I'll take a look and see if I'm doing anything different.

Got it, i had to manually copy the game over.

Instructions are on CIC, but they only mention WC1, so1, so2 not WC1 & so1 & so2 (the deluxe cd vesion)

Go to the Tech Support forum on the Wing Commander CIC. They're really great about helping people with this sort of thing. In fact, this is the only kind of question anyone ever has.

The tech info on CIC was about the regular WC1 and not the deluxe, however you could pull the necessary info from it.

I managed to play through up to the destroy the destroyer, and quit.  After playing just one mission I end up with a nasty headache.  :sigh:

Eh, try using Virtual PC 2007 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx).
I've had pretty good luck with it.. as long as the game doesn't require an accelerator, it should be fine.

Component  Virtual machine emulated hardware
BIOS
 AMI BIOS

Chipset
 Intel 440BX

Sound card
Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 ISA Plug and Play

Note

Virtual PC provides support for sound that is compatible with Windows Vistaâ„¢. On virtual machines that run Windows Vista as a guest operating system, SoundBlaster is not available.

Network adapter (multi-function)
 DEC 21140A 10/100

Video card
S3 Trio 32/64 PCI with 8 MB Video RAM

EDIT: You get to select the amount of RAM available yourself, based on how much you actually have in your system.  (I have 2 GB!  XD )

Always wanted to know if there was any kind of speed-regulation built in to VPC at this point.  You happen to know?

That's been my main barrier in using it, to this point.  Besides, the newer dosbox works much much better than VPC using DOS.

Maybe it's the fact I could never get the speed absolutely correct, that causes wc1 to give me such a headache

The latest DosBox has an "automatic" setting that I've been mighty impressed by.  Can even run stuff that I couldn't find the correct settings for before.
