Title: My Vasudan Model
Post by: J.P. on June 01, 2007, 11:34:02 am
I'm attempting to make a Vasudan 3d model, just for fun, and I have this much so far.

I started out using only my observations of several angles of Vasudans taken from the intel anims. Once I had some good topology and proportions. I put in a picture of a vasudan from a cbanim from FS1. It's the one where they first discover some Ancient stuff and they need help. I matched the front view up to that and now it looks almost perfect... from the front.

The side and any angled view looks odd to me. If someone could give me a perfect side reference I would appreciate it. I want to get my hands and the headz video and see what reference I can get out of that.

Looking very nice for a start, definately recogniseable as a Vasudan, which is what is most important :)

But does anyone have the side reference? Or the headz video? :v: concept art?

Wow, outstanding work!

People have wanted a decent Vasudan model for simply ages.  (There have been several attempts, but none decent.)  Now we can make Vasudan pilot models and maybe some cutscenes. :D

As for a side reference, will this do?

Cutscenes? How do you do them? Using FRED as for ships-only cutscenes or with other programs?

Rendering model scenes with 3D modeling softwares like 3DS Max.

It's from the lab cutscene, FS1.

Ok, I change the question: can we do a FS cutscene with both ships (fred cutscene) and human-vasudan characters? (for example: we show a ship in a battle and then her vasudan crew inside the ship)

It's from the lab cutscene, FS1.

do those cutscenes have so great details?

They were special renders that wouldn't have worked in-game or something.

:v: were nice enough to release some of the screenshot renders I guess.

Thanks guys, these really helped. But unfortunately there's no direct to the side view that's hi-res enough to use as reference. These did help me out though with understanding the shap of the Vasudan head. So I just eyeballed what I needed.

I made a video of the model rotating around 360 degrees. Could use some constructive criticism. Something doesn't look right about it.

Wadya think?

Actually, that looks just about perfect.  Very well done. :)

If you're a perfectionist (like I am - no harm in that), have you tried looking at the Vasudan animation in the tech room?  It's not exactly hi-res, but it's a good closeup.  I've attached a sample frame.

Are we only going to get the HeadZ of the Vasudan, or are you going to make the body too?
Title: Re: My Vasudan Model
Post by: J.P. on June 05, 2007, 05:11:00 pm
I'll eventually get to the body too and I might also texture it, but that depends if I'm still interested. That'll be the easier part to do I think. Because they have a perfect front reference in the intel anim for Vasudans.

I'm not sure about giving it a skeleton though. That's one part I'm very inexpirienced in. But even if I did do that I'll have done it in blender. Yep, that's what I'm using, so I'm not sure it'll work in programs more familiar to other 3d artists.

I think i found a way to perfect my model. In the freespace 1 cutscene where admiral wolf is briefing some pilots on the capture of the taranis, right after he says, "We're going to attempt something bold, the capture of the taranis." A vasudan pilot in the background, who was staring directly at the camera, turns to his wingmate, giving us a full profile. It looks kinda lo-res, especially on youtube, but I think the uncompressed .avi version is hi-rez enough to where I can get the proportions and the shape of the head just right. Now if I could only find the uncompressed .avi somewhere. *hint*

Well, find the .mve cutscenes (they are on the discs (http://hades-combine.com/web/index.php?ind=downloads&op=section_view&idev=76)) and play them.

Or get the .ogg ones here (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/FS1OGGcutscenepack.vp), as .mve is a bit obscure.

I shall. I'm starting over again with the new references and I already like what I see. I could possibly match this up to actual frames of cutscenes with vasudans in them.

I think you missed a bup.

Bud-up, bud-up bup bup bup.

 :p

Anyways. Yes, the references helped me out a ton. In light of my new model I think my previous one is crap. It had good topology but now it doesn't look right.

Here's the new one.

I think I might have to work on those flaps and that odd skin thing behind them, but I feel comfortable with it now. Thanks for the references!

So any constructive criticism? I know I have to add stuff like the more complexe lobe... things... and an upper lip, but any thoughts beyond that?

The top most pointy lobes are a boit angular at the top, they need MINOR smoothing at the edges in my humble non-zod friendly opinion....

Otherwise 100% great !

We apparently see some female-voiced Vasudans in FS2 using the normal Vasudan head ANI. But IMO it's ridiculous to assume that the Vasudans have the same sexual dimorphism that we do, or that their evolutionary line even has two genders, as opposed to one, three, five, or whatever.

I do not believe having 3+ genders is very efficient. 2 seems to be the perfect number. Gives the specie the ability to mix genetic information up without having to make it difficult to find a mate.

Well, after a long absence, I finally regained interest. I made a new Vasudan head. Today. And it's better than the last two.

The topology is better but the back end is still cluttered with to many faces. But this is by far the best Vasudan head I've done. Eventually I'll have to try to understand the concept of the neck and body, find reference pictures. Eventually I'll be able to to get it right using observation of the animations and such. But anyways check it out. Rather than pictures, I'm uploading the model so...

Right Click/Save as (http://h1.ripway.com/JQob/Vasudan7.blend)

For those of you who don't use blender, here's a .obj (http://h1.ripway.com/JQob/Vasudan7.obj)

I'm not sure if this site will work. I just randomly searched for some places to upload. Try it and see if it works.

The .BLEND (http://www.4shared.com/file/52565933/db2330ef/Vasudan7.html)

The .OBJ (http://www.4shared.com/file/52565932/ac240079/Vasudan7.html)

By the way, does anyone know what a vasudan neck looks like? I don't think it's the same as a human neck. For some reason I have the impression that there are three necks there. Anyone got a good picture from any of the pilot animations or something?

So what do people think? I'm positive there things I need to change now. I might need a better front reference. I managed to get the perfect side reference from the silent threat vasudan vs terran video. Right when he grabs the terran his head is in the perfect side view. So that's what I bases this off of.

I've seen pictures of the front and back at certain angles and I'm positive I'll have to mess around with the mesh, retopo some areas, reshape others. It's almost perfect.

I've put the model up for download so other people can edit it if they want to.

So critique?
