Title: Uninstallation: how?
Post by: masonchumpia on June 03, 2007, 11:07:57 am
How does one go about uninstalling fs2_open? I haven't been able to find any documentation regarding this. When attempting to remove Freespace 2 through the Add/Remove Programs dialog, Windows tells me that the directory in which I installed Freespace cannot be found. Is fs2_open like the typical Windows setup that tucks random DLLs away into various locations or will I be safe in deleting the fs2_open folder?

Uhhh... why in the world would you want to get rid of FSOpen????  :eek2:

To uninstall FSOpen, I believe all you'd have to do is delete the fsopen.exe, the fred2open.exe, the Launcher, and the Media Vp's folder. Then you'd still have retail installed, but without Open.

Can I just say...

Burn the heretic! :P (j/k)

Well actually, Dark Hunter, FS2Open IIRC modifies the registry of your retail install so it's much less simple than that. I'm not sure but it looks to m that masonchumpia wants to delete FS2 altogether.

Delete the folder, then, if you want to, delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Volition" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Volition, Inc." in regedit. The last step isn't needed because it shouldn't mess with anything else, but if you want to remove all traces, that's how you do it.

I meant that if you want to revert to retail you have to do some messing around in regedit too.

Deleting Retail FS2 normally is easy enough.

Shouldn't have to.

I was pretty sure it modified the registries.

Whatever.

It does, but since SCP is Retail compatible, it doesn't mess with the ones Retail uses, they are still intact, so you don't have to change anything.

Hmmm... I guess you're right then.

if you want to revert to retail id just delete the freespace folder and re-install retail through its installer.

That's a waste of time. Just delete anything you don't see in this picture.

You don't even need all of those files in fact. :D

well theres alot there that doesnt need to be there. ereg and mindspring can go, the updater and patchw32.dll can go, i doubt they even work. just manually install the final patch. the pxo url can be dumped to, another thing which probibly doesnt work.

I agree. My point was that you don't need to waste 5-10 minutes reinstalling the entire game when you can just delete files and have the same effect.

The updater works though :)

ah, i had just assumed that the patch host isnt online anymore. none the less oncew youve patched the game, you really dont need it anymore. the only retail files i even use are the vps, everything else i just cleared.

Why not just move the SCP files into a folder?

Well presumably they're uninstalling the SCP because it didn't work for them, they didn't like it or they can't spare the space for it any more.

You're being a bit of an idiot uninstalling the SCP but keeping retail otherwise since a proper SCP installation doesn't interfere with you playing retail in the slightest.
