Spoiler Warning...[/i]
I cant believe it they killed daniel jackson =( and next weeks is supposed to end in tragedy too - but hopefully for the goauld surely they couldn't kill off more cast memebers just after daniel - although i got to admit there is the possibity of daniel coming back but stilllllllllll
Edit: No need for all those dots - one bold warning is enough (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well, is that bad? Important people dying is always good for make tragic parts in a plot. Anyway, he already died in the movie, and still he came back after 5 minues (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
-
If main characters can't fail, you don't have risk, and thus no dramatic tension.

i dont know i still think it will be weird i hate when they introduce new characters into main roles and they cant have sg1 with just 3 poeple in it - and jackson complimented the team - teal the jaffa warrior - o'niel the exerinaces solider - cater the scientist and jackson the geek who know alot and could pseak to jsut about any alien - hopefully he will come back - and he didn't fail he saved a lot of peopl dieing by defusing a bomb that was about to blow up a planet or at least a good deal of it just happened to touch the thing - abit unfortunate really

Feh. Its true, but it bites.
One of the things (besides graphics) that Final Fantasy:TSW got right was right at the very end. Ash died. AND HE STAYED DEAD. If he had gotten back up, I'd have demanded my money back.

Was the captains name Ash? I haven't seen it in awhile so I don't remember too well. But I do remember one thing - Akhe should have jumped in!

Well, it's japanese. Even if they made it for US audience (which sadly was a big mistake), they were still japanese, and, well, japanese movies often end this way. They temprered the thing coz even if the captain dies, it's not a sad end, after all.
Grea movie, it's really a shame it was a flop.

Jackson will not be returning any time soon. He failed to sing on as a regular for series 6 (?) but he is due to re-appear in a few episodes.
My theory on the next 2 series of Stargate:
Anubis attacks Earth. Asguard ship comes to whip *** . Having advanced tech from wherever he went, Anubis whoops the Asgard vessel and capture Thor. Jackson or the Tollan come to the rescue and obliterate all of Anubis' forces.
Tada.
-
nope anubis have proved he still fears the asguard by trying to get the tollan to destroy earth and besdies i doubt many if any of the tollan survived
the asguard have promised to help defeat the goauld once the repilcator threat is over but they cant as it would end the series - and remember the goauld dont invent new tech they steal it and there is noone as advanced as the asguard except perhaps the nox left in our galaxy and we know all the races of the alliance took steps to prevent the goauld gaining there tech the anicents stuff jsut didn't respond to the gouald and i bet money that any asguard nox or the other ones tech they find will be equally useless to them - besides it would spoilt the show - we like to look upto the asguard as the supremely poweful good guys - we know they can take the gouald but we know they cant afford to at the moment since they are fighting for there lifes
also got to point out that anubis's second attack on earth was another attemp to not let the asguard know that the goauld were responcible an asteroid filled with naaqutia when reported to that asguard they jsut saw it as natural disaster and never would have been the wise except for carter having worked out a plan to save the world (again) while it seesm thor might be injured or captured i doubt it was cause he was defeated in battle by the goauld it would take a large fleet of motherships to trouble an asguard mothership remeber the differnce in level of tech - the goauld the tollan the tokra all take days go get around the galaxy - the asguard can fly from one galaxy to another in minutes - the asguard rule!!!!!!!!!!

Even though you thought they had aired it in the U.S. before europe it still doesn't mean everyone in America has seen it.

Ditto.
I thought he'd be removed from the series soon, but he died? Didn't he become an Ascended dude? That would allow him to come and visit in S6.

Yes, you do (in some cases).
In the U.S. Stargate SG-1 runs first on Showtime (premium cable), then a season later in broadcast syndication. So from my point of reference Daniel Jackson is still alive, and Haru-Er (however you spell it) just got killed by Apophis.
And KillMeNow-- if you were really sorry (or had a clue), you'd edit your first post to include a spoiler warning and massive spoiler space.

Farscape is the only scifi series on television worth watching right now. Enterprise isn't very interprising, Bab5 fifth year is done, the Crusade is dead, Earth's Final Conflict is evidently not terribly final, or even very conflicted, and Andromeda just fired the only writer who cares about having, you know, a story.
That leaves us, pretty much, with Stargate (memorable only for the full frontal nudity in the first episode and the incredibly bad writing that followed it) and Farscape (a series where the writers care about the story, the actors care about their characters and fight the writers when they screw up, fun villains, vile villains and even fun, vile villains). I'll take Farscape over any of the other crap out there right now.
Besides, Farscape had the best babes: Zhaan, Chiana, and Aeryn. Jool needs to be introduced to the inkyblack with extreme prejudice, tho.
Then there's John and D'argo: the best written male duo ever in space shows.
The writing always includes some humor to temper the drama. They always include a bit of the epic, balanced with the personal. You can't beat that sort of writing.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Stargate has some of the best writing of any show I've ever seen, sci-fi or otherwise. Its science is better and more consistently realized than B5 ever managed, and its character interaction so believable it almost feels ad-libbed at times.
Your judging it by some passing nudity, and Farscape by its babe factor, is very telling of what you look for in a show. Cartoony, loud space opera.
Granted, I like them both. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
And Enterprise sucks. Vulcans are supposed to look calm and detached, not constipated.

I like Sg1, simply cos it doesn't feel like sci-fi. Admittedly I only watch it on-and-off, but there's none of the rediculous cod moralising in sci-fi like Star Trek (especially), and no stupid jargon like trilitium dimeniosnal matrix, or some other crap made up to explain plot holes. Plus, 90% of the nice tech they use is stolen from someone, and most of the time they have ****** all clue how it works. Which, as a computer scientist(to be), appeals to me (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

You're putting words in my mouth. I don't judge Stargate by the full frontal nudity in the first episode. I said it was the most memorable thing about the series. Neither do I judge Farscape by its babe factor. The babe factor is ancillary, the writing is all.
You want my actual judgement of Stargate? A poorly realized licensed property from a poorly realized movie treatment of one of the less well known works of a good author. Not only was the writing stilted and stiff in all the episodes I caught in the first and second seasons, the special effects were bad and the psuedo science worse. The show couldn't, in my eyes, be saved by the inclusion of the MacGuyver guy. It was a premise with promise ruined by the team of monkeys who were give charge of it.
You are right about one thing though: I want space opera.
I want a consistent overarching story. The story must have tragedy and triumph, love and hate, comedy and drama. At some point, the viewer must be genuinely afraid that our hero just might not make it through this scrape.
I want fully realized characters whose motivations go beyond a 'role'. There must be character development. The motivations of the characters must change with the ongoing plot. There must personal interactions between the characters that have meaning outside the episode in which they took place.
After all that, I want special effects and sound and psuedoscience that adds up to an internally consistent setting. Its science fiction, not a guided tour of a barely disguised southern california hilly desert (bonus points if you know THAT reference). We're going to alien worlds with alien people and alien things.
Yeah, its quite the laundry list, and so far, Babylon5 and Farscape have been the only two series so far to deliver all of it.
All of that aside, I agree with Aldo completely. SG1 does dodge the StarTrek technobabble syndrome. This is a distinct mark in its favor. *heh*

stargate sg1 is the best sci fi on tv at the moment easily it is consistant the characters are always consistant with what we have come to expect and story is compelling - we are fighting against an overwheliming enemy force and are winning but ocassioanly get in far to deep and only through pure chance save the entire planet
as for my comments about thors etc i not spoiling as thats not on until wednesday and i promice not to utter a word about it unless clearly marked in the topic that its best only for those that want to know the future of the show or have already watched it on sky 1

You think so?
I think it's one of the best TV shows I've ever seen... Oh well there's no accounting for taste I suppose.
-
jsut want to answer afew things - the reason most planets look similar to earth is because they are the gate network is connecting planets where human life is possible esentially the reason why all races look human is because mostly they are - distrouted aroudn teh galaxy byt he goauld
the effects in my opinion are great - the gate horisozon effect is really quite good i been trying to dupilcate it in lightwave for sometime now and still haven't achieved anything near as good as for the staff weapons blasts - they look pretty convincing to me and the explsions where tehy hit are allwyas perfectly located
b5 was good no denying it but it had all the consistancy of a jellyfish left rotting in the sun for days then run over by a car
star trek similar
farscape is just too weird for me to like and they truely do have some dodgy effects as for the villians than scorpio or what ever his name at is totally unconviniving - reminds me of somethign from lexx or worse
nope not nearly as good as any of the star treks b5 or stargate

Hah! Very well said. I totally agree. SG-1 manages to pull of its sci-fi very convincingly - I like the universe it's been put in. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Okay... my 2 bits? I like them all but for different reasons...
SG1 - The characters, first and foremost, are your basic, modern day run of the mill soldiers who are constantly thrown into some very weird and sometimes extreme situations. The story is your basic save the earth from the impending aliens invasion type, but they pull it off in a way that makes it seem like it's really happening. Technobabble? Not here... They may start into what seems like technobabble, but they always end up with a simple, easy to understand explanation. Most memorable ep? The time loop episode... First time I saw that ep I was squirming on my bed with peals of laughter... O'Neal teaching Daniel how to read an ancient language? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)
B5 - The Story is this show's best feature, and with a 5 year continuous story arc that throws loop after loop at you, it shows. The characters are well done but some could be a little better done, not that I know how tho'. Technobabble, pops up from time to time but is never a major feature. Memorable ep? Too many to find a single one... Although, the ep where Sheridan tricks the League of Non-Aligned Worlds into letting the Rangers patrol their space pops up...
Farscape - Everything... Even though I've never seen the first ep (*begins ranting up and down the hall*), most of the charas are totally believeable and those that aren't are still somewhat believeable, and the story is well written and is also believeable (aside from the ones that aren't supposed to be). Technobabble is kept to a minimum and only used where it's needed to make the story interesting... Memorable ep? The failed starburst ep where moya ended up being split into 4 different realities...
Enterprise - Good episodic story and charas that could use some work (but we're only in the first season of this, so I'll let that slide), but technobabble runs the show more often than not, and when it does they tend to make it believeable mor often than not. Memorable ep? Two... 1) the chrononaut ep (cool CG imagery (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) ) 2) the ep where a human freighter has been attacked by aliens but the freighter crew manages to capture one of them (real good story, plus I like it when you get a glimpse at the mundane stuff)...
So there you go... My 2 bits, whether you wanted 'em or not... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
-
Farscape:
Nothing ever goes right. It has Claudia Black (there's a dood making a 3d model of her (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)). Talyn was cool. Wormhole effects rawk.
Stargate:
They never get any useable technology and when they do, theres a catch. The Goa'uld are one of the most evil villains since the Daeliks (sp?). Has Amanda Tapping. Has scantily clad Vanessa Angel .
Enterprise:
They get their asses whooped. Less smug superiority than other series. Has Jolene Blalock being rubbed up and down in her under garments .
Babylon 5:
Friends are enemies. Enemies are friends. Really brutal wars. Basically it's the West Wing in space. Brought to light Claudia Christans other ventures.
Deep Space 9:
Showed that if it came down to it, the Federation would commit genocide to win a war. Very, very good stories. Had Terry Farrell. And the Dominion attack ships were uber-cool.
TNG:
Was **** at the beginning but got better. Still a little too stuffy for my liking. It did introduce the Borg though.
Voyager:
Excellent effects towards the end. Once more showed that given enough of a reason, the Federation would do anything to succeed. Had far too much Prime Directive crap.
TOS:
Kirk was a true hero. A woman in every port and never a child (excluding films). Good, if a little extreme, stories. However it cannot be excused for introducing the Prime friggin Directive.
Andromeda:
First series was good but can see it starting to waiver. Has Lexa Doig and that blonde woman. Neitzchiens rawk.
Crusade:
After watching some re-runs I think I may have judged it too harshly. However there is very little needless nudity and I still don't like Gideon. He should get the plague and die.
No main character has ever properly died in Star Trek except for Kirk. Dax was put in a new host. Yar came back as Sela. Kes just disappeared. Sisko went to the prophets. Dukat got stuck in the fire-caves. I suppose Kai Winn did die but she was more of a recurring character. They shoulda had Voyager exploding with that damn sphere.
-
from what I have seen from Andromeda, it had nice effects, but the plot was... huh, terrible :p
-
One thing I'd like to point out with ST at this point was that you have to bear in mind what was going on in real life when elements of it were concieved. For instance TOS had the striving for world peace/understanding and getting along in it - whereas more recently ST has become concerned with winning the ratings and the way to do that is combat. Hence Voyagers many fights with aliens, DS9s war and so on - people like the violence these days but back when TOS was written the idea of peace and hope for the future was more important than fighting.
Thats how I see it anyways (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
-
I hate how TOS had all these worlds filled with beings of unimaginable power and other worlds filled with civilizations exactly like Ancient Rome but in TNG, VOY and DS9 you never hear anything about them. Pretty much ever planet in the later series is filled with aliens but TOS had humans all over the place. How the hell they got there is another matter entirely but they killed continuity from TOS. Although I suppose it would have been extremely hard to include all the wierd stuff TOS encountered in the newer series.
-
It's a good point - although obviously budget limited what we saw in TOS - you'd think a lot more "human" worlds would feature - at least in TNG and DS9 (although Voyager is obviously in a different sector of space that "humans" haven't visited properly).
Personally I think it'd be nice to have a few more "unique" races, DS9 and Voyager kinda settled into having a few large species holding all the space we see - there should be more diverse groups of people, even if a lot of them are human or whatever - some variety would be nice instead of just "Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Borg etc..."
-
Yeah, they should show stuff like the Kretonin Guard and the Krenim and stuff. Although I suppose it's a little bit costly to have 30 special alien mask made for one of two episodes.
-

Demonstrably false. Stargate is the best SF series I've ever seen for internal consistency in this regard, unlike Trek, where every cool new gadget is conveniently forgotten by next week. The SG teams have found and made recurring use of Zaks (the pop-up snake-head guns), naquita reactors, and the second Stargate, and quite a few seemingly one-shot gizmos have had repeat appearances, like the gun that reveals cloaked enemies, or the parallel-dimension transporter. That's one of the reasons I love this show... if there's a situation they could get out of using something they found in a previous episode, they'll do it... or at the very least, acknowledge the gizmo and explain why it wouldn't work in this situation. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I think you mean Spock. Kirk had a sucky death in a sucky movie.
------------------
ZylonBane's opinions do not represent those of the management.
-
But Spock came right back. Kirk is the only character (main character) who has died properly and stayed dead.
Wow, SG-1 has a few Goa'uld guns. Any major technology is just out of reach or they have to give it back because someone gets pissed at them. Although recently this has changed somewhat, fuelling the belief that next series will see all out war with the Goa'uld.
-
At least he stayed death in the official canon. In some ST novels (written by Shatner himself) he was resurrected by some strange Romulan-Borg alliance :rolleyes
-
I've got that book. Its called The Return or something. But he dies in that as well. You learn like 2 pages into it that the technology used to resurrect him was flawed.
-
No, he will come back. I never read this particular book, but I read something like he was rescued by Hugh and his group. They removed the Borg technology from his body.
-
i agree entirely that consistancy is one fo the things stargate does best - even how the closed the gate to the balckhoel - and how the managed to resuce o'niel notice they didn't suddenly forget that if the gate was burried prooperly it would not even going to open but they worked out a reason why it would still work and using a a technology used against them they worked out how to open teh gate properly - nope its done very well - and it is done without a true sci fi fealling - very good indeed
-

Odd, I always thought a "true sci fi feeling" in science fiction was a GOOD thing.

what i mean is that it feels possible - ok they ahve tech we dont have - but not when the show started other than the gate itself all tech was very real and even what they use mostly is still stuff we have today - they aren't running around with phasers etc - they occasioanlly take zats but thats it - and the fact that its possible adds a new level to it - i mean i live true sci fi too like star trek and b5 - infact i quite like the enterprise show cuase while its not tech we have its so far behind that of the tng and dsn adn voyager what we are used to from trek that it feels far closer to what we can do that and there fumbling around the universe getting into conflicts with races far superior than they are - i think it was the second epeisode and tehy fire some pathetic torpedo at a ship adn it just bounce off there sheilds and the fact they ahve no shileds - seems liek perhaps we might get there someday where as the old treks they were so perfect we never did anything wrong all humans were nice and never disoybed orders etc and we didn't all work just for the good of mankind etc

Enterprise is funny too. Its probably so far one of the best ST series.
-
I think Nemesis (ST: Movie X) should have a nice war with the Borg in it. It's got the Romulans in and everyone seems to think the Romulans and the Borg wuold team up eventually. There should be a coupla hundred cubes appearing all over the Federation and they have to resort to kamikazi attacks to repel them. It'd be nice to see a Sovereign ramming a tactical cube.
-
What's the ST movie with a gigantic alien ship in it ( the frying pan even seems to fly in it )? I've just seen a trailer of that on TV, I'd like to get a shot at it...

Either ST: The Motion Picture or ST IV: The Voyage Home.

from the description I'd have to say you're talking about V'ger from ST1
------------------
Bobboau, bringing you products that work.............. in theory
-
dunno, it's a huge ship (you see only small parts of it), with lots of glowing stuff.
-
Yep, thats V'Ger - the only ship the Enterprise (1701A) flew in IIRC...

A this time it was still the original NCC-1701 (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
It was until Kirk blew it up in ST3.
-
Another thing Kirks got going for him - he's not so bone idle as to place his ship before everything else. Picard was up for that kind of stupidity.

/me shoots Zeronet for the good of the gene pool

I like the decontamination scenes (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif).
It's nice when they resort to sexual suggestion to keep people interested. It keeps things..err...interesting.

My favourite SF TV Shows:
1. Enterprise (even though I've only seen the premier - I'm in Australia)
2. StarGate SG-1 (has been number one since it started, before Enterprise came around)
3. ST: Voyager
4. ST: TNG
5. Farscape
6. ST: DS9 (only includes season 6, 7)
One of my favourite shows is the british production called Hornblower. It's about a young man called Herachio (I can't spell that) Hornblower in the eighteenth century. You see as the young man flies up the ranks (similar to a likable Wesly Crusher) onboard the the frigate Indefatigable (which means not-fatigue-able). The producers and writers did an excellent job with the characters and the stories and I was always impressed.
This has nothing to do with Science Fiction, this is history you say? Well, the reason why I mentioned this is that it always reminds me of Star Trek, with the way the characters are portrayed working as a team, etc and sorta exploring the unknown. To me, Hornblower seems more SF than history.
They only made about 10-20 episodes, but has anyone seen this? (To Setekh - it was on the ABC at prime-time last year.)
-
well, seeing that scie fie series shown in france for the last 10 years can be counted on tyhe fingers of one hand, there, for me:
1) Space Above and Beyond
2) SG1 ( the few episodes I'hve seen were half cool, and half boring ( "sliders" syndrom, I hate that)
3) Red Dwarf ( Mwahahahahaha)
-
Space Above and Beyond is friggin mint. The Chig ships rawk. I liked that Chiggyvonrichten fighter thingy. And Elroy-L is one mean mofo.

Ah...my post hurted eh? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

True-est thing anybody ever said. One series my arse... still, at least I can afford the whole thing on video (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Now why don't we all sit down and watch Lexx together? I eventually took to the internet to find an explanation of just what the hell was going on, and I'm still (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/confused.gif). First-rate viewing, although I'm worried that my dangerously lengthy barnet is begining to take on something of a Divine Assasin look, which is probably a bad thing...

my fave ski-fi series is by far: Farscape
Aryon Sun (dont ask me how to spell it) is realy cute, and I love the way they always use my favorate space fornomonom WORMHOLES all the time, also i Love the design of the ships, Tallon (God Bless his hull), moja and Dargos' ship RULE.
I just had a thourt what about binging daniel back, he could come through the
1) Dimentinal Mirror
2) His Robot double could come through the stargate.
3) The Ascar could bring him bak to life, I am shure they have he Technology.
-
Aeryn Sun (3d-underground.com was making a nude 3D model of her but the site seems to have disappeared)
Talyn (uber-cool)
Moya (small but cool)
1) Feasible
2) Robot got it's head blown off by Cronos
2) His 'soul' is gone. He trascended, which is a lot more than the Asgard could ever do. They can't even have sex.

*cough* Did you not-at-all-clueless individuals somehow miss the huge spoiler flaming at the start of THIS THREAD?
