Title: modding idea: instant action
Post by: Ryan on June 08, 2007, 09:58:22 pm
im installing what i think is a working version of freespace 2!

So, what about this modding idea:

Insant action, instead of multi player or that stuff, you make it so that you set up the battle and fight

You your self choose from the fighters, coverates, battles, and even the big giant juggernauts like the samanthos and the collosus.

You could add 5 fighters of shivans and 3 GTVA, with you and 3 other AI fighting against 5 AI.

You could make big huge battles, sevreal covverates vs a giant shivan ship, or 2.

Impossable battles. Your Puny fighter versus a ship 20 times your size.

Fighting as either Shivan or GTVA.

Is this a possible addition? i think it would be fun to create huge battles.

A custom battle creator like that would be awesome.  General users wouldn't need to know FRED to make some cool fights.

I think this was discussed a few years ago. I'll try to find the thread, but several good ideas were generated (I think the main idea was to set several things in a table or something). It never really got off the ground, however. I think it'd be a great idea for when you wanna just do some dogfighting. Only problem, and this may not affect a lot of people, is that I've been playing Freespace for 7 or 8 years and random dogfights aren't what I live for. I play campaigns for story, and from the trends that are emerging (Blaise Russels work, the satire campaigns, etc.) a lot of people want story.

It'd still be a) *****ing b) good for testing stuff.

I remember hearing about this long before I signed up.

I think it'd be a great idea, especially if it was set up like the IL2 generator or something. I.e., select ship types/number, mission type, enemy AI level, and off you go.

*Points at BHX*

This is all possible now you know guys. BHX is actually way past this point already. :)

But for a simple skirmish generator you wouldn't even need half of the stuff BHX uses.

You set up a two mission campaign. Mission 1 sets up a bunch of variables based on the ships the player wants to include. Mission 2 sets up the mission using the Change-Ship-Class SEXP (or better yet use that and my advanced team loadout stuff from HEAD) to set up the ships you want in the mission.

I personally say it's a waste of time. Instead, of making some complex code to do it, just learn how to place ships in FRED (select ship from dropdown list, hold ctrl, and click somewhere).

And with some of the stuff that you mentioned in the first post, it would just be quicker to do in FRED itself.
