Title: Some Sort of Major Announcement!!
Post by: Goober5000 on June 08, 2007, 10:15:14 pm
Silent Threat: Reborn is almost done! :D

Okay, you've heard that before.  But this time, we're closer to being done than we have ever been in the past... and we're ready to start auditioning voice actors. :)

Now keep in mind that the reason we've taken such a long time to finish ST:R is because we want nothing less than the best campaign we can produce.  The best story, the best missions, the best gameplay... and so naturally we want the best voice acting to go along with it.  This is why we will be AUDITIONING voice actors, not handing out the role to the first person who comes along.  We will also be hitting up the major voice acting websites like SAVAGE, VAA, and so forth.  We welcome any and all auditions from HLP, but we want you to submit your very best. :)

You may submit your auditions either in this thread or via PM to Admiral Nelson or myself (ideally both).  Upload them to FileFront or Rapidshare or one of the many free file hosting services out there.  If you would rather submit via email, PM one of us for an email address.

Without further ado, here are the roles, with the suggested audition lines below.  Not all of the characters, unfortunately, will be realized to their fullest; as FreeSpace is not primarily a character-driven game.  They're just there to get the voice actors' imaginations fired up. :)

Main Characters - characters who will recur from mission to mission and who will have a significant number of lines, ranging from one page to several

Admiral Jason Scott - Commanding officer of the GTD Krios; gives the player command briefings during the first half of the campaign.  In his mid-60s, Scott has served the Galactic Terran Alliance as an officer since the very beginning of the Terran-Vasudan War.  Promoted to Admiral and granted command of the Special Operations branch seven years before the start of the campaign, Scott is strongly loyal to the GTA not only out of pride but also out of a genuine commitment to the highest ideals of the Alliance.  He is a man of fierce integrity, standing up for his principles and doing his duty even at significant personal or political cost.  He likewise demands honesty and accountability from his subordinates and peers.  These values have earned him a reputation as one of the most trustworthy and steadfast officers in the GTA.

Admiral Marcus Glaive (CAST) - Commanding officer of the GTD Repulse; issues various in-game messages.  In his early 40s, Glaive rose through the ranks quickly in the latter half of the Terran-Vasudan War, distinguishing himself in numerous engagements as a brilliant tactical leader and unconventional thinker.  His flexibility and ability to adapt to widely different circumstances allowed the GTA to turn several seemingly certain defeats into victories over the course of his command.  Glaive is "in his element" as leader of Research and Development, a position which allows him to explore new tactics and technologies to the fullest.

Admiral Samantha Tess (CAST) - Commanding officer of the GTD Soyakaze; gives the player command briefings during the second half of the campaign.  In her late 40s, Tess has only recently been promoted to Admiral, a controversial decision.  Although a capable leader, equal to any admiral in the GTA, many argued that her leadership lacked a certain "above and beyond" factor to qualify her as a fleet leader.  While her leadership may be merely standard, however, her perception and analytical insight make her the perfect fit for her position as head of the Intelligence branch.  Her uncanny ability to "get inside the mind of the enemy" has proven invaluable again and again in numerous engagements, allowing the GTA to predict enemy strength and movements even on the basis of limited information.

Squadron Leader of the 91st Phantoms (CAST) - Gives the player mission briefings during the first half of the campaign.  A capable pilot and a stern, no nonsense leader, this guy will do whatever it takes to get the job done, no questions asked.  Very much a "lead, follow, or get out of the way" guy.

Squadron Leader of the 82nd Nighthawks (CAST) - Gives the player mission briefings during the second half of the campaign.  He's a well-rounded pilot who is interested in not only the mission at hand but how it affects the larger fleet operation as well.  A little more of a team player than the first squadron leader, he seeks to put his pilots in a position where they can show their strengths.

Terran Command - Faceless communications officer who gives in-mission situation reports, status briefs, changes in orders, and other pertinent information.  Authoritative and succinct, he tells the player what he needs to know -- no more, no less.

Wingman 1 - Veteran (CAST) - Male, early 30s.  This wingman has seen it all and lived to tell about it.  Nothing really fazes him; he takes it all in stride whether he's in a dogfight or up against a major enemy vessel.  He's usually a bit cynical from long-term exposure to the war, and he can get sarcastic when ticked off.  He only grudgingly tolerates his fellow pilots, and can occasionally get impatient.

Wingman 2 - Buddy (CAST) - Male, early 30s.  This wingman has been around almost as long as Veteran, but he takes a more practical approach.  He's fairly sure the war isn't going to end soon; he's fairly sure he isn't going to live through it; so he makes the most of a grim situation.  He takes a personal interest in making sure all of his copilots know what they're dealing with, because he knows the best way to get a good pilot is to take an average one and polish him until he shines.

Wingman 3 - Vixen (CAST) - Female, early 20s.  This wingman (or wingwoman) has learned that "a little comfort goes a long way" in boosting morale and improving flight performance in fellow pilots -- and it's a lot of fun for her, too.  Gorgeous in person and accomplished in the pilot's seat, she's always willing to give an ego boost but is careful not to overdo it.  It's one thing to encourage a pilot to give 110%; it's a different thing altogether if he goes overboard and gets killed out of sheer bravado.

Wingman 4 - Bitch (CAST) - Female, late 20s.  This wingman (or wingwoman) is perpetually on PMS.  It's almost as if being annoyed is an essential part of being a good pilot -- she gets annoyed if an enemy fighter eludes her, but she gets just as angry (in a self-satisfied way) when she scores a kill.  Rookie is intimidated by her, but Veteran, Vixen, and sometimes Buddy will engage her in back-and-forth from time to time.

Wingman 5 - Rookie (CAST) - Male, early 20s.  Fresh out of the fighter corps and eager to prove himself, he nevertheless can find himself in situations where he feels he's in over his head.  Whether he presses on despite his fear or panics and becomes useless depends on the plot.  Occasionally he can get himself killed, only to be replaced by a new identically-sounding rookie in the next mission.  He's an ideal candidate for Buddy to take under his wing.

Vasudan Translator - Synthetic voice that translates in real-time what the Vasudans are saying.  Speaks in a monotone, only slightly inflected.  Sounds sort of like a nasally HAL 9000.

Vasudan Speech - Untranslated (CAST) - This is more of a sound engineering/voice filtering role than a speaking role, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.  We are looking for someone to generate extended samples of a throaty, hoarse alien voice for us to use as the background for the translated speaking roles.  We have a 20-second sample, but since that 20-second sample has been used for every voice-acted FreeSpace mod ever produced, it's getting a little too recognizable.

Minor Characters - throwaway characters who will usually only have a couple of lines each, but for whom we will often need more than one person -- for example, if there is a brief scene with two Terran Lieutenants talking to each other, we will need two people.

(These are just a few of the miscellaneous bit parts we have throughout the campaign.  We may end up using multiple people for each role, except for the first two.)

Admiral Genghis Po - commanding officer of the GTD Intrepid.  A slight (not heavy) Chinese accent would be ideal, but is not required.

Commanding officer of the GTI Jotunheim

Terran Captain

Terran Soldier

Terran Scientist

Yaaayy!! :D

I may have to volunteer my voice. Although I'm a bit too young for anything other than early-20s pilot.

I really love the character background.. I wish there was a way to fit this sort of information into the game. The Intel section, perhaps?

If I had a half-decent mic, I'd gladly take a stab at Veteran or Buddy.  Unfortunately...

Well, glad to see this is getting closer.  Will this get out before mid-July, if you don't mind the asking? :)

EDIT:  I dare someone to do Glaive's (or the scientists') line in a Professor Frink voice.  That would just about make many people's days.

I'll have a go at one of the squadron leaders. Once I've got a few mins spare, I'll record and upload both lines to see what you think. :)

Wal-Mart.  10-15 bucks.

You won't mind if we submit lines for quite a few of these parts, would you?  Or would recording half of the lines listed above in the hope of getting picked for one be considered whoring one's voice out? :p

Not really.  The website, maybe.  Of course, we'd need a Silent Threat page.

Extremely doubtful.  It's my experience that voice acting takes a while to organize, and another while to actually get recordings.

Plus, I'm waiting on a couple other super-secret ST:R features.

Ugh.  That's why we have auditions -- to weed out crap like this. :p

Well, you get what you pay for, and unfortunately the $10-$15 microphones aren't going to sound very good.  You'd be better off splurging for one of the $30 headsets if you want good recording quality.

I have these two headsets, and I'm pretty happy with both:
Sennheiser PC150 (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PC150-Cancelling-PC-Headset/dp/B0000DCRHA/ref=sr_1_4/103-8507644-5267866?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1181419814&sr=8-4)
Altec Lansing AHS515 (http://www.amazon.com/Altec-Lansing-AHS515-ear-cup-headset/dp/B000F6MOB2/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-8507644-5267866?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1181419838&sr=8-1)

Feel free to submit as many auditions as you want.  You likely won't be picked for a large number of roles, though, unless you have an extremely wide vocal range. :)

You know guys, if it's bad voice acting, then I probably will turn off voice volume. As it is, I don't really appreciate voice acting as much as some people.
Title: Re: Some Sort of Major Announcement!!

That's obviously always your prerogative, even though I highly doubt that this will come out anywhere near "bad."  As for myself, while I wouldn't consider voicing a campaign to be a necessity, it does lend a rather large degree of immersion that you just can't achieve in any other way.

And thanks, Goober.  I don't think I'm really able to self-critique myself to figure out which role my voice might be best suited for, so I was planning on trying several of them to see how they turned out.  Even in the best case, I'm not expecting to be picked for more than one or two. :)

I don't think that was meant to be taken badly...

How was it supposed to be taken? It was a deeply unnecessary contribution - not only is tone negative and rude, but also incredibly pompous. Who the hell is Snail and why are we supposed to be interested in what setting he puts his voice volume on?

At best it's a backhanded semi-autistic way of saying 'don't worry too much about the voice quality guys, I'm just in it for the campaign' but I dread to think somebody could mangle online interaction that badly.

I think he was just saying "I hope the voice acting will be really good.  Otherwise, I'll just play it without the volume on, because bad voice acting ruins campaigns for me."  True, it was worded badly, but I don't think it was necessary to bite his head off for it either.

Anyway, I just picked up a nice $100 mic, so I'll give one of these a shot.

EDIT:  And away...

Uh... Is sorry enough...?

I wasn't trying to be cynical or trying to be a twat or anything, I was just saying that if it's really bad voice acting, then I will probably turn off voice. I hope we can get onto good terms here because I like to have more 'friends' than 'enemies.'

If there is no objection, I would want to take my try on Admiral Scotts' or Admiral Glaives' role. If they have already been taken, then I'd like to be Squadron Leader of the 82nd Nighthawks.

But in the end, you are in command of those roles.

But rest assured, we're still keeping you in mind. :)

No offense, just a suggestion. My two cents.

No offense taken. That was my first attempt and was done in one take. I've sent him some other samples with me varying my voice a lot and with better recording equipment and software. I think they came out ok, but my opinion really doesn't matter. :warp:

Regardless if my voice is just used as one of the captains I'll be happy enough. Its their baby, I'm happy to contribute in whatever capacity they feel right for the project. Obviously I'd like to be used more than that of course, who wouldn't :D

I know I'm a complete noob to HLP, but I saw this and couldn't pass up giving it a shot.  If any of this is at all promising to the powers that be, I'll invest in a mic that will let me get inflective/emotional without overloading it.  As it is, I had the input cranked to 11 and had to be literally right next to it.  Still, recording didn't turn out too bad for a 12-year-old microphone from an IBM Aptiva.  ;)

Thanks guys!

I hope I'm not rekindling a rightfully-dead thread, but I was tinkering around with a new *coughtoocheapcough* mic, thuogh the fidelity isn't much better.  But, whether or not considerations for VAs are still being made, this was fun and thought I'd throw this out there.

I had some inspiration for the 91st Phantoms squad leader... basically I thought of Michael Ironside's Rasczak character in the Starship Troopers film... Rather than "lead, follow or get out of the way," I think this just ended up as "get the @*%$ out of the way!"

Laptop microphones are crap. Better off investing in a peripheral.

DiabloRojo: That sounds terrific -- both the recording quality and the voice itself. :) I'm pretty sure I want to cast you as somebody, but I'm not sure who yet.  Could you try to do a variety of voices?  If you could do an Admiral Petrarch-style gravelly admiral voice, that would be fantastic. :)

Double-click on your volume control, hit Options > Properties, select Recording, hit OK.  Select your Mic (or Un-Mute it)... also, hit Options > Show Advanced Properties, this should give you an "Advanced" button under your mic slider.  Click the button, and try toggling the "Microphone Boost" option if the recording level is too low.

If you're looking for recording software, Google up Audacity.

Does this work for you?
