Yep, It's pretty far along too.
When will it be released?
After the new Mediavps have been released and intergrated into the installer.
When will the new Mediavps be released?
I have no idea... but whenever that it is, the DVD will follow soon after.
I actually have a v1.5 beta DVD put togther now using the current mediavps but it just for testing, for now.
What will be on the new version of the DVD?
Glad you asked!
First off - Bug fixes, like the mis-spelling of the FS Port folder wil be corrected.
And yes, the addtion of Lightspeed's Nebulas (with can be fixed in the v1 with the v1.01 patch available for the current v1.0 DVD, the link is in my signature)
A new Vasudan themed Sub Menu :headz:
The installation of FreeSpace 2 SCP from the DVD will be in two steps:
Installer One: It will be pretty much like now, It will install the complete FreeSpace 2 SCP Open with FreeSpace Port including Silent Threat along with the Mediavps and the FreeSpace Updater. What will not be in there this time will be any extra user made campaigns.
Also the installer will write a small registry key that will tell the next installer where you install the FreeSpace 2 SCP to and automatically point it to that location. :)
Installer Two: This will install additional user made campaigns.
Currently the count is at 79 and is as follows:
Included Campaigns List:
Second Front

Now since the Campaign list has grown greatly, chances are that with the new mediavps being, most likely, larger in size, not all the FS Open projects (B5, WCP, & BtRL) will not fit on the DVD with all the FSSCP stuff (which has top priority, it's the FreeSpace SCP DVD after all) when using Single-Layer DVD Media. That will leave us with Three Options:
Option One: Remove one project but then which one?
Option Two: Remove all the Projects and make seperate DVD for them. One DVD for FSSCP and another for B5, BtRL and WCP.
Option Three: Keep all and make it a Dual Layer Format DVD. A Blank Dual DVD will run you about $12 to $15 for a 3 Pack at Wal-Mart these days and of course you will need a dual layer DVD Burner. Note however you could still mount it in a virtual drive just like any other ISO file.
Me? I think I like option three for me personally BUT for the web distrubition and easiness for new people (and everybodies economics) I think Option Two is the way to go but hey this is for the whole community so I want know how YOU Want It!
Thoughts? Comments?
Any additional campaigns you want to send my way or point me to?
Speak up! It's gonna be YOUR DVD after all!
hip63 :p
P.S. - the write-in option, go with option two AND option three (filefront is unlimited hosting after all ;)) and call option three version the FSSCP Deluxe Duel DVD :D
-
Make a seperate DVD for the TCs.
-
Option 2.
-
Option two seems far more sensible.
That said, damn. I might just have to uninstall FS2, simply to reinstall using this. Holy crap. So many campaigns, so easy to get them all!
Just out of curiosity, how big (in gigabites) will the full FS2 install folder be? Mine's already the largest game on my system outside of The Sims 2, which in itself is obscene (thank you, custom content).

:wtf:
Umm... uhh... that's not really something to brag about. Custom obscene game content.
Is it?

Option 2.

Mine, with all the 79 installed, with the current mediavps, sits at 5.35 GB.

Option 2.
Thanks for collecting everything together hip63. Doing so is not only a *****, but WAY overdue.
-
Bumb :)
I want to get some more input ;7

This is an amazing idea,
What about a nice simple desktop theme and some MP3's too?
btw where can i £££ this amazing piece of plastic when its finished?
(cover costs of course ;7)
-
Eh, why can't you just spread it over two DVDs, eg FS Retail install is spread over 3 CDs?

I like the idea of maybe a desktop theme, a collection of desktop wallpapers, maybe a screensaver or two, a winamp skin and maybe the windows log-on/boot-up screens. (I got them from somewhere here although I cannot remember where now! :nervous:). So the DVD will have a few extras you can install if you want to go fully FreeSpace2. ;7
-
Any other ideas? MAybe those desktop games that were made a few months back perhaps?
Also all the up to dat eworking tools (minimum needed to mod a TC) and legal freeware copies of TS mayhaps?
I'd be willing to pay for a DVD of all the FS2 gubbins on the net right now, It would save me having to root through several CD's worth of crap which i have. :)
-
Sorry, you can't buy a DVD this nice, so you will just have to download it for free ;)
If someone wants to work up a desktop theme, I'd be happy to included it.
As for these other things mention, post me some links & I'll see about adding them

Some tools can be found at http://www.descent-network.com/descman/ (http://www.descent-network.com/descman/), but I can't find the high-limit ModelView there.

Option 2.

Option 2.
Option 3 definitely has it's charm but the size of it could be intimidating to new players like myself. Downloading something that big without even knowing whether or not you'll like it could put people off. DVD 1 for the basics to get people interested, DVD 2 for all the extras once they've been hooked to their drooling bottom lip by DVD1.
:jaw:

Download it?
............................... :eek2: I'm not that patient, Give it a month or two til i sort ou tnippy soopah-fast net conn.

I think you'll have the time yet! :P

Make sure you generate some .par2 files this time unless you're going for an all .torrent method of distribution. If you need help with how to set up Quickpar just ask.
-
Two things:
1. Any chance of making a quick download available for all those campaigns? It'd be a great resource for those of us who need the campaigns but not the whole DVD pakc with mediavps.
2. Boomerang and Warzone are being SCPified by the FSCRP. They may be released before the mediavps, so make sure you include the new versions if they are available.
-
Yay. As someone who just doesn't have the time to keep up with FSOpen and related campaign updates the first DVD was a god send. I'll be looking forward to the next one and all the updates associated with it. Thanks in advance.
-
For your FS1 campaigns list, you may also want to include the All Hands to War demo.

AHtW to be added :)

What's wrong with my idea? Have the installer request the 2nd DVD when options that are on the 2nd DVD are selected to be installed. (TCs, etc) Just put a note on the selection that it's on the 2nd DVD, and have the "need 2nd DVD" dialog box have a cancel button, in case they actually don't have the 2nd DVD. This avoids the dual layer problems.
-
I've tried that before jr2 but the software for the DVD menu I use will sometime give errors when you swap out the disc.
hip63 :g
-
Hmmmmmm. What software do you use? :)
jr2 :p :p :nervous: :p :p
-
Also it's more trouble than it's worth, because of the shared menu system you have to put in.
It not a bad idea just problematic at best to set up
I'd rather spend the time on perfecting the installer itself as I do have other projects I'm working on ATM as well. (Like a Fighter Squadron DVD ;))

-
It'd be really cool if they timed the release in unison with the 10 year celebration of Freespace.
-
Is it an ISO? Or what? do i just extract to a root before i burn it?
-
Just a question: Would I really need a DVD to burn this stuff or could I just install it directly into my system?
-
Yes it is an ISO File.
No you don't have to burn it, it can be mounted in a virtual drive such as daemon tools (www.daemon-tools.cc) or cloneCD virtual drive (www.slysoft.com)
hip63 :p
-
Well that's good to know since I'm poor. :sigh:
