Title: Unnamed Fighter
Post by: Black Wolf on June 13, 2007, 06:22:00 pm
Knocked this together over the past few hours while I was supposed to be studying for my Sedimentology exam in a couple of hours. I figure it's a very early TV War (or pre TV War) fighter - I want to use visible hadpoints to put some big dumbfire rockets on its wingtips, and let little missiles come out of the lower compartments (the upper compartments will probably hold it's primaries - I only realized I had no space for them when I'd nearly finished). It's 3380 polies, most of which are tied up in the engines, but I wanted big, high poly engines, so, well, bugger off poly police :p

Oh, and I know there's something funky going on with the left hand side from the top down view - not sure what as Max is refusing to open up, but it'll get fixed.

Definately. Anyways... I'd recommend you actually make the ship a bit less-graceful. Most Terran designs are a bit bulkier--still it's a cool ship.

It's a Terran!!!???!?!

Very primitive terran, yes. We're talking very earliest space combat - second generation fighters sort of thing. This isn't the "shrugs off nuclear warheads" kind of fighter you get in FS1 and 2.

If I can come up with another halfway decent design I might take a crack at making another one. I love this kind of high-tech-but-low-tech sci fi. :D

It's the engines.  Put some modified A-10 Warthog engines on it, you'll be fine.

I think you have some slight poly errors on the left side of the ship at the back and approximate middle (both visible in the top view), but aside from that (and the fact that you're sorely tempting me to shun uni study and do more on the valkyrie. Again. :p ) I really like this one. It has a very distinctive AND cool looking shape to it, which is one of the biggest hurdles of ship design already cleared.

What I'd recommend you do from here is integrate the engines with the hull a bit more - or maybe even vice-versa. The sleek curvy engines look a bit out of place on an angular hull, though individually both look great. You could try extruding some panels or other greebly bits from the engines, or you could add some curvy bits to the hull to blend it into the engines a bit more. Either way could look really cool, though I think the former would be a lot easier than the latter. (And it would help get rid of the strong naboo starfighter vibe the engines give off.) ;)

Other than that, I'd say just add a few features to the shape to give it a more detailed profile (like breaking up that rectangle that stretches between the engines) and you have a winner. :D

Fixed the poly errors, but they were immense, so I was forced to run the symmettry modifier over it, which was annoying, so a lot of what I've done has been eliminating that centreline. I've played with a few bits - will post screenies tomorrow.

Incidentally, the A-10 is my favourite aircraft bar none. It looks cool, it's damned near unkillable, and it's got a buttload of firepower. That main gun is a killer.

I should do a Warthogesque fighter next time... hmm...

Ya Warthog FTW!  But after you finish a 'hog fighter, do one for the SR-71 (which started out as an interceptor b4 they figured out that traveling at a faster speed than your ammo is not a good thing.)

I like this, a lot. It makes me think of a Terran Anubis - a light skirmisher/interceptor. It also looks like it could manage atmospheric flight, perhaps.

Hmm... Could TVWP use this?
(just knew that question would crop up)

Right. UV Mapping is completed and I've started texturing the first fighter (around doing some FREDding and modelling for TI, so it's going slowly- will post some WIP shots when I get a bit more hull painted). Also made this heavier, bulkier companion for it. It's a pure bomber, meaning that at this point it has no primary weapons whatsoever. I can use objecttypes.tbl to adjust its AI to compensate for this so that it only attacks what I want it to, but it'll mean it'll be 100% reliant on fighter support.

I'm actually getting a little bit excited about this little miniproject. It's well and truly back burner stuff as TI has to be priority, but now that the TVWP seems to be active again, there's no need for me to step on their toes by making a FS universe campaign in the same timeframe, so I might branch out a bit (If I ever go anywhere at all with these that is). I've got some cool ideas about technologies and ship classes for a non FS universe (SMOKeS - Semi-Mobile Orbital C(K)ombat Stations - like big, multi turret sentry cannons that can be grappled onto by a FTL collar to be shifted - sort of a precursor to true capital ships, fighter docking rings for FTL travel (like the Hyperspace ring on Obi Wan's EP2 ship, but in reverse - a ring on a ship which a group of fighters dock to as a FTL carrier, like B5's raider battlewagon, visible bombs on wingtips, huge big monitor style guns on small microcruisers (100 odd metres) all sorts of stuff is starting to take shape :D)

Anyway, pictures.

Nice. . ;) I like the new bomber.

Nice. The engines on the bomber look like the fan of a swampboat.
