I've been rather starved for good spacesims for a while now, as i'm sure many of you have been. Every little while I reinstall freespace to replay it - so it was a very nice surprise to finally stumble upon this place.
To feed my hunger however, I have recently bought Space Force Rogue Universe, Dark Star One, Freelancer...
Freelancer gets pretty close in it's appeal/draw when compared to Freespace 2. However, I am curious as to what you ladies and gents have played out there?
Recently I've stumbled across a few other indy-titles such as Evochron 2.0 an Arvoch and I'm curious as to what Freespacers think of those two? Or anything else out there in general?
I fully understand well that Freelancer/Spaceforce are that merchant/trader/craftsman/bountyhunter style of game vs FreeSpace/Wing Commander which are more of a strict Military plot games - but I am a fan of both sub-Genres.
Any recommendations/warnings?
Thanks,
Sam W.

I found Starshatter: The Gathering Storm quite good. You can fly fighters and capital ships in 1st person, and when flying capital ships you can also command all the air wing. Also, when you fly fighters you can enter the atmosphere of a planet. And you can choose between newtonian, semi-newtonian or FreeSpace-like physics (the game itself says that physics is "like FreeSpace 2"!). However, I found it a bit complex to learn at first.
If you get SS:TGS, you may want to check Mattivanhanen's (sp?) FreeSpace Online, a FreeSpace mod for SS:TGS.

if you happen to like MMORPGs too, you can taste (a cookie to the one who gets the reference) EVE online. there is a 2 week trial for it. It has a pretty steep learning curve, but the game is VERY deep and worthwhile. I play it, and it works for me when i get uber bored.
and WOW! SS:TGS sounds pretty good to me! :D

uhm
do you know galactic fedaration?

BREAKABLE MODELS :D

Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos, Tachyon: The Fringe and Starlancer are good titles, too.
Yes, i agree, my girlfriend owns StarShatter and Starshatter: The Gathering Storm, both are interesting games, too, because they mix Space-Sim with Flightsimulator (Mission on Planets) and Real-Time Strategy.

There is also x-beyond the frontier, the original to x2 and x3. Babylon 5 I've found her (free to download), Flight Commander (also free). Battle of Endor 2.1 and Battle of Yavin 1.1(free and from the same developer small progs but not too bad), Void War (another freebie) and finally the Starwraith series (Starwraith 2 and 3 and Riftspace, very good for small progs at less than 30mb each and written in Dark Basic. I think it's the same indie developer as Evochron 2.0).
That's all I can think of for the moment that hasn't been mentioned yet! :D

There are also the Wing Commander Secret Ops based mods like Standoff etc.

I have XWA, I've played around DarkSaber's station a bit... but XWA seems too buggy for some reason. It crashes quite a bit; which I don't like.

Space Sims? I don't know all of them, but the ****iest space sim ever is made by Mr. *****
(Note: If you are thinking about Mr. Smart, you guessed it right)

Wow, totally original and appropriate to bring him up yet again. That was unnecessary.
As for space sims, I always supported taking a look at Starshatter, it's got a lot of potential.
