Title: Crappy explosions - forgot how to fix them
Post by: S-99 on June 21, 2007, 06:35:36 pm
I heard there was a way to make the explosions higher quality by changing a settings in the fs2 directory. I have since forgot this valuable knowledge, searched for it and could not find it again. And would like to make basic explosions like this ummm...normal because i know they are supposed to look better.

EDIT: I don't mean the nice shockwaves, those are fine, just the explosion. There was a way to fix it, and i don't mean new explosion effects being suggested. It was something in the fs2 directory.

OK FIXED. Had to edit fireball.tbl and change all of the lod's to 1. They were all on 4.

Yeah that fix was sort of a mofo for me to find. But, not too bad since it was a fix i replied to in the past. In the fs2 directory in data/tables folder, open up fireball.tbl. And where it says lod and the value for lod, change it to 1, and do this for all of the lod's. Save it, and start fs2, and you'll have higher quality explosions. If you don't have a data directory, set one up. Just make a data folder and inside of that make a tables folder. And if you don't have fireball.tbl, use vpview to extract fireball.tbl from root_fs2.vp to the data/tables directory that you created, and then of course change lod's in fireball.tbl, and you're done. And you don't have to worry about fs-open defaulting to the fireball.tbl in root_fs2.vp, because fs-open always pays attention to whats in the data folder first and what's in the vp's second.

EDIT: the only suggestion i have for explosions is different and higher res explosions for anything bigger than a fighter or cargo container exploding. That would be nice. :)
