You can download it legally for free.

No, the OP is correct. Freespace 2 is protected by US copyright law, which won't expire for at least fifty years. You can download it for free on HOTU, but that doesn't mean that it's legal. You would need (probably written) permission from Interplay and possibly Volition in order for it to be legal.
The only reason that I know of that it would be otherwise is because of Fair Use (Which I don't think would apply to exact distribution of the original files to end-users) and because of the license agreement clause which states that it's OK to give FS2 to your friends for free (as long as you don't charge money).
Of course, IANAL.
-

Whenever this gets brought up, I have to point out that, a few lines below that clause, there's the "Interplay may alter this agreement at any time" clause. If you try to use the friends thing in court, they can say that that clause has been removed.
I am a coder, not a lawyer, obviously.

so should I buy it on ebay?

No.
Download it here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,38195.0.html). I will give you ten million billion dollars and serve all prison time if you get charged for downloading it.

I thought my link had a link to that.
*looks at the link in question*
Hmm... I didn't even know Hunter had an installer. Except it's both Turey's and Hunters. Except Turey has a newer one.
-
:welcome:
Welcome to the HLPBB spiderdog.
Just wanna say that since the problem is solved.
-
so has anyone befriended me?
-
your not gonna just download the danged SCP????
and, knowing the friendly little HLP community, we are ALL your friends :D :p So why else would we (i havn't been here long, so i'm not part of "we") give you the entire game coupled with mods and enhancements for free?
-
look, this game has been abandoned by Volition. just download it.
-
All the people here on HLP have the game, which itself is 10 years old. No authorities have the time to look after a game that old that not much people outside of HLP care about.
-
does anyone here actualy have the disks?
-
*raises hand* 3 of them X2, since the first 3 i lost :(
-
lol, i have burned disks, but i dont think that counts
-
are you going to continue a pointless conversation or grab some common sense and download the SCP?
-
if Volition doesn't care(they aren't making any money off of it, right?) then they wouldn't care, right?
thanks
(off topic: can multiplayer maps be made on linux?)
-
does anyone here actualy have the disks?
My brothers friend does. Except that was 6 or 7 years ago, so he probably lost them by now (my brother borrowing the disks was how I found FS)
if Volition doesn't care(they aren't making any money off of it, right?) then they wouldn't care, right?
IT'S FINE!!! Look at it this way if you feel bad: FS is probably worth 5 USD considering todays market. Let's say that there were 30 people at V who would have recieved money had you actually bought it, 30 people at interplay, and 1 person at the box creating company, 1 person at the CD making place, etc. So about 62 people being mega mega mega underestimated. 5/62 = 0.0806451... I'm sure that each of them would be willing to give you 8 cents out of the kindness of their heart... Well maybe not interplay, but so what?
-
if Volition doesn't care(they aren't making any money off of it, right?) then they wouldn't care, right?
Exactly. Thats what we're trying to tell you. So DOWNLOAD FSO!!! :doubt:
-
Well, it would make him feel better if he could do it legally, as per the License Agreement. So yes, I'll be your friend for this. And a couple of Volition developers do support the SCP. Dan Wentz is working with people here to provide high-quality versions of the game soundtrack. Interplay owns FreeSpace, not Volition, and Interplay's out of business.
-
You name one person who got put on trial for downloading a game 10 years old and you darn well better give me a legit case. :doubt:
So just download SCP already....like i said, here at HLP, all of us are your friends! (some of us to a certain extent)
-
Koopa, I pm'ed you.

Koopa just gave me these links to give you :nervous::

He says that he secretly controls all of these and it's legal for you to use them. I also admire your willingness to not break the law.

I did what? Oh, right, those links. Yeah. I totally searched the forum so that I could give them to thesizzler to give you. Yep, that's what I did. Oh, and I PM'ed you back.

I never had FS2 in disk form.
I still have my legal copy of FS1 though.
-
I have both. Twice.
I bought FS2 (big box).
I bought the white label FS1 and FS2 re-release to get FS1.
Then on holiday in America I saw and bought the FS1 Battlepack to get hold of Silent Threat.
I also have a copy of Freespace : Colossus which came with my Force 3D Joystick (which ironically enough I bought to play FS2! :D ) So that means I have FS2 2 and 1/3 times :)
-
I have FS1 + ST 2 disk set which I bought on eBay, and I d'led FS2 via BT prototype24... I would have bought it, but at the time, they were selling it for $80 US and up on eBay... I hate that... got FS1 + ST for a half decent price, but FS2 was such a hot item they got away with some of them asking $120. Jerks :mad2: ahh, well, that's capitalism... And this is me: :arrr:
EDIT: Just checked eBay for "FreeSpace" (http://video-games.search.ebay.com/freespace_Video-Games_W0QQcatrefZC12QQfclZ3QQfcolZshipQ2doffQQfrppZ100QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ33QQsacatZ1249)... FS1 + ST can be had for $7-$25 after shipping... FS2 however, only has like 3 or maybe 4 entries.. $20 and up... there's one entry for "FREESPACE 2 + FREESPACE 1 VOLITION CLASSICS (http://cgi.ebay.com/FREESPACE-2-FREESPACE-1-VOLITION-CLASSICS_W0QQitemZ290129819931QQihZ019QQcategoryZ62053QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem)" for $120. Grrrr.
-
Double post, I know... but there was a FS Great War DVD version (http://cgi.ebay.com/Descent-Freespace-The-Great-War-DVD-Version-WOW_W0QQitemZ330058076990QQihZ014QQcategoryZ62053QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem)? Should I snap this up to see what's different, or is it nothing new?
EDIT: And BTW, the 20th Anniversary edition (http://cgi.ebay.com/Freespace-2-20th-Anniversary-Edition-better-Star-Wars_W0QQitemZ300124980747QQihZ020QQcategoryZ62053QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) has 20 extra missions? Campaign missions, or just multi?
-
i think the extra missions are op avatar.

Do you mean the GOTY edition? There are extra missions on that...mainly some missions from user created campaigns. There's one from Derelict on there, i know....Rites of...er...Passing?
spiderdog, if you haven't gotten a copy yet, email me, we can exchange pleasantries, and i will mail you a copy.
-
Do Volition still hold any copyrights to their game? (Unlikely, but I ask anyway...)
We could sort out something with them so we send them money :)
Hey... if we do it right, maybe that'd encourage them to eventually make Freespa<&(£(3<NO CARRIER>

i wonder how much V would want for the rights to FS any way. if HLP were to buy them we wouldn't have any pesky legal issues any more. they'd probably be expensive though....
-
It's not :v: that own the Intellectual Property Rights to FreeSpace2 but Interplay, :v: owned the rights to the game engine, which they have already released to the community as open source! How many times do we have to go through this with people!
And before you ask, no! Interplay won't sell the rights to us as although they are in financial difficulty at the moment, even they realise that the rights are worth quite a bit!
-
i thought as much

If Interplay goes bankrupt, don't they have to sell their stuff to pay their bills? That would be a good time to snap up the license, if it ever happens. Make sure you get the rights to FS1, ST, D1, DII, and D3 as well. :D XD
-
the HLP admins should buy out the rights for Freespace.
-
Can I just say Koopa pm'd me too
but i think its wrong to post links to goatse :D
-
wtf whos posting links to goatse? ?!?!
Jeez , and other ppl find it fair to have a go at me (GOOBER :mad2:) when people are doing nasty crap like that. :hopping:

They're just sorta almost kinda rather bankrupt at the moment. They can't pay rent, they can't pay their studios. All they've really done is propose ideas for games.

Hell for a while there they couldn't even pay their own employees

Eh, since you didn't get the "official" beam, I have an excuse to fry you a second time...
:welcomegreen:
EDIT: Darn it, they changed the official beam on me. :sigh:
-
You know, i've never seen a FS2 box anywhere in Singapore...
-
all the more excuse to download FSO!
-
Heh. I didn't have to dl it. My friend dl'd it for me, and set it up for me.
