Title: Colossus Movie
Post by: Hades on June 25, 2007, 08:58:04 pm
The Colossus cutscene was bs.It says that the Colossus was bigger than 12 Lucifer class destroyers. Its only bigger than 3.

I always feel a strange level of concern when a signature is notably longer than the text of the post.....

Oh, and are we talking length, or volume?

Both.

Thing is, I don't know the dimensions of the Colly exactly, but it only has to be 3 times as long, twice as wide and twice as high as the Lucifer for 12 of them to fit.

Edit: After playing around in Fred for the hell of it, I think the correct number is around 9-10 Lucies, thogh I'm not really sure what possessed me to check ;)

I also was disappointed to know it's lack of turrets. Only 12 missile batteries and 15 flak cannons over such a huge surface area?

I dunno, guess my standards for a uber-powerful ship are a little high, since i come from the XWA area, where star destroyers have probably 50+ turrets covering the surface area.  :doubt:

Don't you think the Colossus would be too awesome if id hat this amount of weaponry? :D

Learn to calculate VOLUME. Height, width AND length come into play....

In all honesty, I seriously think that the Colossus is way underarmed. It is 12 times the volume of the Lucifer. Assuming that the Lucifer is twice the volume of an Orion (a reasonable estimate), that makes the Colossus 24 times the volume of an Orion. Why then the Colossus has only 5 times the firepower of an Orion,  about 6 times the fighter complement and 10 times the hit points? I might be able to accept the hit point value if I consider armour plating level, but not the issue of firepower.

Because you could.   ;)

could the fs engine handle more weapons on the colossus?

That's the problem with uber-large ships--you hit a limit on the number of turrets. I think the Big C was a good idea gone awry, saying that that Big C's in-game setup was the same as it was advertised by the GTVA. The Colossus was designed to be surrounded by destroyers and still survive--thus the large beam coverage. It is quite deadly in the case of a broadside, though is very weak head-on, as compared to the Lucifer and Sathanas. Remember the Sath is larger than a Colossus--by volume. Most larger ships aren't as well-armed for their size--it just doesn't scale up that way. You need many more crew personal to keep a larger ship running, better weapons require more space, and everything requires more power. The storage tanks for the Colossus take up much more space then for an Orion. The crew has to sleep somewhere as well, and central recreational facilities would need to be larger. Remember how many people are on each ship. The Orion is a town, the Colossus is a city.

I tried in FRED but the most lucies I could fit was five.

You have to consider the spiky bits, and the fact that the colossus has a tower block hanging from the bottom of it, you need overlap the lucies slightly to compensate for their wierd shape.

Basically, you can fit two blocks of 2x2 lucies over the main body of the Collossus, and there's probably enough mass left over for 1, maybe 1.5 more.

Well 64 turrets is quite a lot. More than any other retail FS2 ship.

That's 80 wings of 4 fighters = 320 fighters.

Remember how big bombers are... try fitting 320 Ursa into an Orion! I Don't think it can be done... at least not with anything but a shell.

The entire Colossus fighter compliment wasn't all Ursas.

It could be anything from 96-120.

The Colossus fighterbay was a frikken hole! :P

Colossus was an impressive ship, but on reflection, i was a little disappointed with it. The only time you got see it in major battles was in the last mission where it was destroyed. Also they could've designed it a bit better. Looked more like some wierd over-sized rifle then a warship.

Famously known as the GTVA Supersoaker.

I clearly remember my cousin's comment seeing the Colossus cutscene (it was the first time he saw FS2).
"Nice rifle!"

Sort of odd that the Big-C has firepower concentrated everywhere, not just the front. It would have made more sense to have every main beam up-front... that way it would be a rifle.

The Colossus is an all-round ship, so it has to be able to fight back from all angles, not just the front. The Sathanas and Ravana are strike ships so they have their firepower situated forward.

That's the point... there is no real concentration of fire from the Big C... unfortunately, the GTVA Super-Soaker has little forward firepower.

A leaky SuperSoaker?

I've pitted the Colossus against ~30 capships (4-5 destroyers, 10-12 corvettes, 10-15 cruisers) and it comes out on top. Not without a scratch, but against a Terran mix, it has about 50% hull left.
With a shivan mix, it barely makes it out alive, but that still says something.

One thing about the colossus i don't get. I flew past the fighterbay, and it's probably big enough to let one ursa out at a time.

How is that a good idea? No wonder the friggin fighterbay gets disabled in Their Finest Hour.

IMO, FS2 fighterbays are just to 'show' you where the fighterbay is, not an actual... 'picture' (for lack of a better word) of what it is.

It seemed to me that in the Colossus' final mission, the shivan warships really poured on the beam cannon fire. I mean, more then normally, they just gunned it. Is there some sort of table script that makes ships do that? not just enable beam weapons, but makes them fire more then normally?

LOL, it'd be cool if a shivan warship just fired its beam cannons so much that it overheated and blew up!

Larger Shivan beams can fire very quickly. Making them fire even faster than they should according to the table's fire waits involves a fire-beam SEXP.
