From the look of it, Freespace 2 is POSSIBLY due to get kicked off its podium as 'best space-sim game ever'. This game looks like it could do it. Its called Tarr: Chronicles. Its designed by russian game developers Kvazar Studios , but dont pass judgement yet. You may or may not have heard about it yet, so here, take a look for yourself.

I took the liberty of also hunting down some in-game footage.

I think its a bit of a Freespace 2 rip-off, in gameplay and storyline. Still, it is absolutely magnificent. The gameplay looks gorgeous, the storyline might be a little cliche (Humans seperated from earth, have to get back home, you have to protect your battleship 'Telastra' as it tries to get home), and the fact that it was designed by a foreign game company might impede it a bit and get lost in translation.
It certainly looks more advanced then Freespace 2 though. Though the plotline looks more basic and boring, you can fly over 60 different craft, fighters , bombers and corvettes (they ARENT the corvettes in FS2 we know, they're more like a gunboat (think Satis).
Anyway, judge yourself. Personally, i think it might just be worthy of finally taking up the new podium of surpassing FS2. FS had its day, and its dominated the little-known genre of space-sims, but hopefully this game will bring new light and hope to the genre as a whole.
p.s It has beam cannons as well !!!!

I agree.
We're supposed to say this is going to be the "best space sim ever" before it's even out yet?
Plus you kind of disprove your own claim:

Basically the only reasons you've given that it will be "better than FS2" is that it has more flyable ships and better graphics. Yay?
As to the game itself, it looks pretty, but very slow-paced and a little boring, IMO. Oh, and according to one of the comments it won't support a joystick - which means I don't buy it, period.
-
I'm sure it will be patched and will support joysticks.
I didnt say it was going to be better then FS2. What i meant was it has the potential to be better then FS2, but I , nor anyone else, knows yet, so we'll have to wait and see.
Jeez, you people read too much into things. I was just letting you know bout the game ffs. Stop picking on me all the time.

If the game's constantly in 3rd person... lol fail
Also there was a post about that game here a few months ago.
No joystick support?

Sorry, man, there wasnt just a post but actually a whole 4 pages long thread about it. I liked what I saw so far from the game but from the demo the gameplay felt like it was much like Freelancer (wich is not necessarily bad but its not my favorite) but I cant really judge since it was all in russian, I want to see it again when they release it in english.
The story is interesting and by far its not a FS rip off (both have nothing to do). :wtf: And if it can be better than FS, by all means take the "podium", its about there are another space-sim. And you can switch the view between 3d and first person view like FS.
But unfortunately there wont be multiplayer (a real shame, maybe in a sequel?) but the singleplayer will be extensive, 9 missions with 135 "quests", that makes for a long game.

I feel quite useless.
I think i'll never post another thread in my life. :blah:

No multi!? Let it rot on the shelves...
Ok, maybe if it is gonna be SUPER good on every other aspect, gfx, sfx, gameplay...
-
Interestingly, the game will not feature joystick support, but you can fly using the mouse and keyboard or a gamepad.
:wtf: WTF!! You can use a gamepad, but not a joystick!!!, If you can use a gamepad, surely you can use a joystick!!!
-
near glowing nebulas
pff!! We can fight in glowing nebulas!
-
Wow... looks very much like freespace. The location of items on the HUD, the lead indicator, hell, even the triangle missile lock icon. Looks pretty good... and We'll see when it comes out.

Some US senator said that the Internet was like a series of tubes...which is quite funny...its become popular internet culture.
The game looks gorgeous in terms of graphics but the gameplay looks more like FreeLancer. Not a bad thing but I think FreeSpace will probably be the last of the hardcore space combat sims that really needed a joystick to enjoy. I think we'll be seeing more games like this. What would really be nice is somewhere in between so that the mouse really is designed as a primary control method but the joystick is just as valid. What made FreeSpace 2 so good aside from gameplay was the mission editor...that would be a key thing for any game to try and "dethrone" FreeSpace 2 as the best space combat game ever made.
-
I think FS2 can look like that if someone wanted to make it look like that.
WHat is its physics engine like? The rest seems similar to FS2, perhaps less drain on resources?

Its interface in space is very much a ripoff of FS1/2. Overal it seems to be a cross between EVE and FS, but looks alone dont make the game, as you need a story and immersion to be worth two ****s. We'll see.
-
Freespace2 , Freelancer and Homeworld2 fused together into a game with good graphics ... Yeah ... Looks nice , but I will not be able to run it on my PC ...
-
It also doesn't support multiplayer :(

Hard to say some of that I think...FS1/2 is a rip off of Wing Commander or X-Wing or TIE Fighter. And all of those are a rip off of Elite...probably something before that. Its a good interface...no need to reinvent the wheel :)
-
I had a look and was not everly inpressed with what I saw *shrug*
-
Well it certainly looks to be better then X3 , in any case. Definately worth a look i say.
-
Hey, I wonder - Would it be possible to somehow implement the Freelancer transitions in FreeSpace 2?
What I mean is, when you go from open space into an asteroid field or a debris field or a mine field (!!) or a gas cloud/nebula, your surroundings change very smoothly and it's really really cool :)
Hard to describe if you've never played Freelancer... :(
-
It might be possible . Though I dunno about it .
What would be even better is to make a mod for Freelancer and turn it into Freespace . I heard of one mod like this , but didn't see any progress since 2004/2005 .
-
That would.......RULE.
-----------------------------------------------------
The Only way it can be better than Fs2 is if=
1#.It has a kick ass map editor.
2#.It has to have a English Version. :D
3#.It has to have UBER good graphics.(again :D)
4#.It has to be fun and be able to work on XP.
-
4#.It has to be fun and be able to work on XP.
To me, that's the main thing and the only thing that matters (except for graphix... :D)
-
well i have to say that game is looking awesome to! aspecially the ship costumasation stuff!
im definitly try this game
but i dont its knoking down freespace 2
atleast not in my head (if you know what i mean)
-
The "Cutscene" looking shots also look alot like the art in Homeworld and Homeworld 2, the story also have similarities. And while Homeworld's story was compelling and fleshier at the time, this seems more like another "Just another exile story." I always thought the power of Freespace and Freespace 2 was very much in the story, not just the high octane battles and mission surprises. That is however, very important!
-
It's okay. the fact the game is only in russian makes it unplayable, and there's some other things i don't like about it.
