Title: Newbie needs help with SCP
Post by: hockeyfandave on July 07, 2007, 10:53:54 pm
Just to be upfront, I have read most of the walkthroughs and either found myself no help or more confused.

Ok. I have Freespace 2 installed from CDs. I downloaded the Windows Installer found at http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Installing_fs2_open and installed it into my Freespace 2 directory. Theres a ton of new stuff in the Freespace 2 directory so I know the installer did something.

Whenever I run Freespace 2, nothing new shows up (meaning campaigns, etc).

I try to run the Launcher (version 5.5) and it crashes and gives me the standard windows error window (would you like to send error report, blah blah blah). The same goes for when I try to run fs2_open_3_6_9 or any of the other newly installed executables.

Is there anything else I need to download or anything I am doing wrong?

OK I figured it out

I did some more reading and found a program called OpenAL found at http://www.openal.org/downloads.html. I downloaded it, installed it, and bingo it works. So you can close this thread/leave it for another person who has the same problem. Thanks!!  :D

Yep. About 90% of the problems people have with setting up the SCP are due to old/bad installs of OpenAL. It's not really our fault since OpenAL is basically something your sound card drivers should be responsible for setting up correctly (same way as they generally set up Direct X and OpenGL).
