Title: HLP History Lesson
Post by: colecampbell666 on July 09, 2007, 08:07:47 am
Some people like Aldo_14 and Setekh have some of the highest postcounts, yet I have rarely seen one of their posts that is less than 2 years old.

Do they use private forums or something?

Just wondering.

They used to be really active, but due to various reasons (marriage in Setekhs case!) they don't have time to visit HLP anymore :(

I know aldo defected over to sectorgame for  :nervous:  "reasons unknown", but I think it was something to do with the direction the community was heading  :nervous:

He's not been here since March  (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=181;sa=showPosts) anyway! He left shortly after setekh it seems (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=8;sa=showPosts)

Kinda a necro, but I'm assuming that Steak is Setekh, as I haven't been able to find his account, and the only quote of his I found led to one of Setekh's posts. When I looked through WayBackMachine, Setekh was his original username, so did he change it to Steak and back?
Title: Re: Old Members?
Post by: CP5670 on November 25, 2007, 11:51:00 pm
Steak was just a nickname others gave him, which came from mispronouncing Setekh. He never used it as an actual handle. :p

I've noticed that some people, like CobaltStarr and fantomeye have HLP avatars yet aren't admins.
Title: Re: HLP History Lesson
Post by: CP5670 on November 27, 2007, 01:45:15 pm
I think they were admins at some point and worked on the original website, but they must have disappeared only a few months later since even I have never seen them post here. Fantomeye was a VBB regular at one point though.

Post by: colecampbell666 on November 27, 2007, 02:46:01 pm
Why did the VBB and VWBB shut down? On WayBackMachine, all indications say that they were going strong at the point of collapse.
Title: Re: HLP History Lesson
Post by: Black Wolf on November 28, 2007, 01:00:06 am
VBB was a spam/troll haven that had essentially descended into chaos and [V] couldn't be bothered admining it anymore, and VWBB was very slow and the admins there decided not to bother any more, for the most part.

Yeah, by the time the VWBB was about ready to close the majority of the traffic was for BWO or TBP, both of which were willing to move here anyway.

Well, certainly at the start of HLP, a lot of the posts were 'fist' posts ;)

VWBB also got hacked to hell in it's last few weeks.
Title: Re: HLP History Lesson
Post by: karajorma on November 28, 2007, 02:06:58 pm
Yeah but that happened after the choice to close it had already been made. IIRC it only hastened it's demise by a few days since it wasn't worth fixing it only to tear it back down a week later.

You mean hacked as in identity theft/virus type hackers or as in countless trolls?

Just some script-kiddie who crashed the PHP, nothing serious, it was easy to fix, just not worth doing.

Wasn't there also a building move going on at or near the time they took it down?  I kind of remember a problem with squadwar because no one seemed to know how to get it running at the new location (which I thing was right across the street).  They finally did reset squadwar and get most of it back up but everything went down soon after.   By that time is was almost impossible to log into PXO anyway.  Good ol' lobby limbo.

actually "[V]" has a reputation for just shutting things down because they're not bothered to maintain them.

VBB was one of them, i wasn't too upset to see it go

Parallax Online was unforgivable.  did i ever tell you the story about it?  does anyone know it already? ;)

they were transporting it to a new location, dropped it, damaged it, and decided it wasn't worth fixing/rebuilding.

thus is the story of how parallax died...

Well I never heard the dropped it part but that is kind of along the same lines.  Mostly I heard that once the servers got moved to the new building no one knew how to get them back up and running correctly.  It would be a valid reason on why they needed to get it running again.  A simple across the street move shouldn't involve any server changes.

yeah well it should have been as simple as unplugging it and plugging it back in at the new location.  they couldn't because it was dropped.  i'm guessing it was probably a desktop that was converted to a server, or something like that.

because it's very rare for people to drop $20,000 rack-mount servers

Also, whoever said they "wish they were here for HLP's birth" made me laugh.

Something like that ;)

Why?

Because most people wish they were when their child was born. Or when someone close to them died. Or how I wish I had a shot at Jamie Lynn Spears before she got pregnant.

Site Feedback is Grognards, just renamed.

And it's in this very section, but only project leaders and moderators can access it.
