I have made nameplate templates for all the ships that support nameplates currently (Fenris, Leviathan, Aeolus, Deimos, Orion and Faustus).
You will need the Stop font available here (http://sectorgame.com/goober/freespacefonts.zip).
I couldn't get the Orion nameplate to work correctly, I tried to follow the Orion Nameplate (http://www.geocities.com/ipw47/nameplates.html) guide, but I'm not sure if the GIMP can do this correctly.
A useful plugin for the GIMP is the DDS import export plugin (http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=4816) for exporting the finished nameplate as a DDS file. Be sure to export as a DXT5 format DDS. In order to for the image to export properly, you have to merge all the layers into one (only applies to Orion).
Improvements welcome. I have just noticed that the Faustus one might not be correct, as it should involve the complicated layering process the Orion nameplate goes through.

I thought someone did this already?

Oh well, I'm doing it as well.

If there was an old one, I didn't know about it. This should do nicely. Thanks. :)

Is it possible to import .PSD files into GIMP? If so, you can just use the template on that page.

I think so, don't know if it can import all properties though.

YAY, GIMP NAMEPLATES!!!!!! :wakka: Thank you very much. I tried to make nameplates with GIMP at one point, but I failed miserably, and moved on to stuff I knew how to do. I couldn't make them with Photoshop, because I'm not willing to dish out the money for it. Once again, thank you very much. :D

Yes, but layer blending styles are one of the things that doesn't work.
