I have down loaded the laqtest version from the site. But I do not see any change in the launch etc... I went to the main hall and saw that it was version 1.20, so is the new version already loaded or do I have to do something else?
I have gone to my program files and I do not see anything else. The launcer looks the same etc... I would like a little help here if you could. I have not played this in years and would love to see the new look.

:welred:
IS it in the same Folder as your Fs2 Directory?
EDIT:Heres the Latest installer - http://hades-combine.com/web/index.php?ind=downloads&op=entry_view&iden=317
-
I see fs2 but I do not see anything else (new). The down load said all of the files were updated, but I do not see anything new.
-
Well did you click the installer?Find were you put it and click the installer icon.
EDIT:Do you have a icon that looks like a paw?
-
If you've installed the SCP you must run the game via launcher.exe not freespace2.exe. The latter will still run FS2 Retail. If you don't have launcher.exe you probably haven't installed it yet. Where did you get the game from?
-
yeah I clicked the installer and it took forwever to down load. It said it was done. I finished and exited. That was the last thing I did.
-
Click Launcher.exe
-
I do not have an Icon that looks like a paw. At least not that I can see. I have done a seach for all of the files, and I do not see launcher exe.
-
It must not have installed right for some reason....I will start my installer and try to see if i might be able to find out what went wrong.
EDIT:IS it in your default Fs2 Directory?
-
ok found the launcher, but now I get an error OpenAL32.dll was not found
-
When you run the installer..When it ask you to install openAL Install.Because you need it to play Fs2 Open.
-
it is not giving me any options it is just telling the error
-
ok I got the Launcher on my desk top and I am going to play with it a little and see if I can get it going . Thanks.

Use the installer not the SDK.

Ok got the launcher. It tells me to brouse for the files. I have found the 3.6.9 version, but the is an error saying the launcher must have the same binary I am trying to use. man what am I doing wrong?
Chesticus
-
I have no idea....I have never heard of this problem.
-
well I have gone back the installer and tried to reinstall. It say that all of the files have been updated. That is good. But I cannot find the files when I go to brouse. I know I am close, but it is getting a little frustrating.
Any suggestions?
Chesticus
Launcher says find fs2_open exe. Now I have looked for this but it is not there. All of the files I have down loaded are in freespace2 file, but the launcher will not access them
Chesticus
-
Were did they install to?
-
the freespace2 file And when I go to this file I can see the frespace2 3.6.9 there and the debug but it will not let me access the file
-
Well I still can't get it to work. I do not see a file that says "fs2 open exe" However, there is a file that says fs2 open 3.6.9. but it says that the binary must be the same, so I don't know where to go from here
Help
Chesticus
also I did install the openal as suggested, but still no go.
-
where is the launcher? In C:\Games\FreeSpace2\?
-
The launcher is on my screen as a short cut. And I think that may be the problem becuase now it is saying that I am launching from another place other than freescpace2 folder. I am thinking about deleting everything and starting over. That is if I can find all of the files. It is not in my add/delete section.

Right-click on the shortcut, hit properties, Shortcut tab, make sure the Start In field says "C:\Games\FreeSpace2"
-
I am starting again with a fresh down load. I found the step by step install and I will try again.
-
IDK, but do you have the Launcher .exe file on your desktop, and not in your FS2 dir?
-
OK I have deleted all files and I am going to start again. Saving to C:/games/freespace2.... But why this would be made so difficult is beyond me. Obviously I am not a programer, but I am not a complete lame either. But I will try again.
Chesticus
-
OK I have all of the files in C:/games/Freespace, but nothing to go on from there so unless there is a step by step as to how to do this I am at a loss. If there is someone who can do this I would really appreciate it.
Chesticus

OK I have the files. I have opened the launcher from the files. It says "C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe" next to the browse button... I press apply... I press run and I get "failed to run fs2_open exe C:/games/freespace2exe C:/freespace2exe."
So the files are there. I have the entire down load. But why I can't get to it is a little beyond my skills.
Help please

You have to update Retail (not Fs2open) to 1.20 with the Fs2 reatail launcher. Then you have to launch retail Fs2.
-
Yes I did that yesterday. (upgrade to 1.20)
Heres one for you. I have gone to the files in the folder and guess what there is no fs2_open 3.6.9. why it is not there I do not know. But the fs2 open 3.6.9 debug was there and I clicked it and it launched. is it working now?
Chesticus
-
The debug build should only be used if there is some sort of error present in a campaign or in your build of FSOpen. Not to be used as the build you play games on.
Find the regular 3.6.9 .exe and put it in the FS2 folder, then try it.
-
I have no idea why you'd have debug and not release builds. Obviously you, your PC or the installer are doing something very odd on your machine.
The majority of people simply use the installer, install OpenAL and then run the game. I have no idea why things are proving so difficult for you.
My advice is you stop following advice for a bit. Post pictures of your Freespace 2 folder (or a directory listing) and then once we know what the hell is going on with your machine we can actually solve the problem.
-
Yeah I agree with you. But at this point I guess the 3.6.9 has been deleted. Like you said probably by following so many different ways. I did a search for the file and it is not there. So I will try again from scratch, but I this I know what needs to be done at this point. But then again, I thought that yesterday.
Thank you guys for all of your help. I am sorry if I sound like a D***. This is really cool what you are doing. This was always my favorite game.

To be honest I think you were a bit hasty with the reinstall. Both Turey and jr2 likely had figured out the cause of the problem.
-
Are you using Turey's installer?
-
Yes I am using his installer. I have uninstalled every file I could find including the original FS2. I went back to try and install the installer and it says all of the files are there and ready to use. I have done searches and nothing comes up. So where the files have gone I really do not know. As a result I cannot delete the files to reinstall and start over again. This is very odd. I have not had this kind of trouble before. Frustrating, but what can I do.
Chesticus

Here, look in my siggy, and follow the directions for posting your FS2 dir; post them (like karajorma was suggesting) here as an attachment. Then we will see what you have now.

A similar thing happened to me with Star Wars: Empire At War. It wouldn't uninstall because it didn't show up as installed. I deleted every trace of it, but in Add or Remove Programs it came up as installed. It eventually screwed up my computer, which it has done several times to several PCs. In the end I had to format my PC, and everything worked fine. This may be the case for you, but it may not be.
I strongly suggest that you don't buy EAW.

OK I have Freespace open 3.6.9 in my freespace2 folder. Infact my game now says that I have the version 3.6.9 as a game that I am playing, but don't I have to launch using 5.5a launcher. Can someone give me the link to down load this file as I can't find it in the installer files.
Chesticus

The launcher is included in this package: http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/3.6.9.rar
-
it says to open this file I need to purchase rar file.

OK I have the launcher on the desk top, and I have 3.6.9 in the launcher. It loads from the launcher and the screen in the game says that it is in fact 3.6.9, but I see no difference in the game when I have played it, so something is still not right. But at least I am getting closer. The screen shots on the site look fantastic.

does it matter if I have launcher 5.0 rather than launcher 5.5? I seem to have less option than the 5.5 does.

To get the graphical improvements, go to the MOD tab in the launcher, click "Select MOD" and select the "mediavps" folder from the list that appears. Then, go to the "Features" tab and check "Enable specular", "Enable glowmaps" and "Enable environment maps". Now try running the game again, and see if that makes a difference :)
The graphical improvements are optional, you see, and have to be manually enabled. There are a wide varience in the quality of the systems people are running, and this ensures that even those with older computers can still play the game. I know it's a bit of a bother, but there you have it :)
[Edit] Oops, overlooked the launcher part. Version 5.5a is definitely a better choice than version 5, though the older version will probably work.
-
To everyone who stuck with me on this... thank you, thank you, thank you. It is in and it is working. Of course now I have to start to remember how to play the game, but that is the fun part.
Shade that was all I needed to finish thanks.
I think the problem was that it downloaded the program to a different file than "games/fs2." So when I tried to delete the file (fs2 the original) the fs2 open was still there, therefore it would not download it again. So I went back and downloaded the files one at a time directly to the fs2 file. After that I just followed the steps you guys told me to. Wow that was a stressful 3 days.
Anyway again thanks people.
