You... edited your FRED? Do you mean you edited missions in FRED? In that case, you have to save them into the data/missions folder, and then you can play themin the tech room under mission simulator.

FRED is basically a mission editor which allows you to make new missions as good as the ones that came with the game. There's a walkthrough included with FRED which you can access from the help menu. If you want to make missions you definitely should do it.

Ah, right. Ctrl Click. You chose the type of ship you want to place with the menu up the top right.

If you have a bought, burnt or halfway decent downloaded version of FS2, you should be able to go into the help menu and grab the walkthrough as Kara said. It's brilliant, and it will solve all of these early problems (for what it's worth, the first time I used FRED, I couldn't figure out how to place ships either).

You have no idea how long the Ctrl-Click thing had me hanging the very first time I opened up FRED - I sympathize. But the help files are really quite excellent at teaching the basics, so definitely check those out :)

About a year ago I opened the campaign editor and found I couldn't place missions. I spent a couple of minutes head scratching till I remembered that you have to do the ctrl-click thing there too. :D

I had the same problem, but I duplicated ships and changed their classes. it worked, but it was bloody hard to double click the duplicates.

You need to use the beam-free sexp, or the beam-free-all sexp, or select "all ships beam freed by default", as long as you are using fred2_open_3_6_9.exe and not retail fred2.exe

Merge them with your registry.  Double-click the file after downloading.  Click yes.  Done.  Retail FreeSpace2.exe should then work.

Your Fred Open 3.6.9 shouldn't have the problem, if you use the shortcut I helped you make, that has the -fredhtl switch on it.  Hmm... I'll have to IM you sometime when I get home.
