Title: Status of Star Wars Conversion??
Post by: Knarfe1000 on July 16, 2007, 08:07:31 am
As far as I know, the FS Star Wars Mod/Conversion was done by another team in the last years but has been given up. Now it´s been revived by new guys isn´t it? So what is the actual status of the mod, ´cause many things should have been done in the past. What has been done, what´s still to be done? What makes me a bit confused is, that many models seem to be in an very early stage although the beginning of the mod is years ago. Or do you have to create everything once again (what means more years of work  :shaking:)

many of the things done in the past were merely conversions from Warlords, or the XWing Alliance Upgrade project
the current goal is to make an extremely accurate SW mod that uses fs2_open to its full potential, and captures the feel from the original trilogy and some of the books (no vong)

yeah, it's gonna take a while, but it's gonna be really good.

want to help?

As this new team came together there was a fair amount of time spent simply discussing what sort of objectives we had for this mod, and how to really take it to the next level.  One of the conclusions we came to were that it has to be very accurate.  We've even spent time crawling over frames of animation to see how we plan to make the ships move in combat.  We're striving for the same level of detail in our models and textures.  As a result, we've started off slowly, but are picking up momentum now that the focus is on work rather than planning.  Unfortunately another thing we decided, however, was that we really would have to start from scratch, given the wide variety of detail and quality on the models and textures, so yes everything is being redone.

Can I give any idea of when we'll have anything available for release?  Not a chance in hell, but we have a pretty good idea of what it is that we need and a fairly good priority set for our progress.

Needless to say, this mod has not been in development for years.  It's rather new.  This is not your daddy's Star Wars Conversion.  This is the next level =)

knowing how to do it (i don't know) isn't the problem (well ya maybe it will be a problem). The problem is getting ideas (which i guess it wont be around here) and getting the motivation. That applies to any type of modding.

The biggest reasoning for the starting over is that a lot of the stuff that had been done wasn't necessarily bad when it was done, but it's so old it no longer takes advantage of what the engine and modern PCs have to offer.  Many of the ships were high poly several years ago, but now just would not cut it in comparison to mods like Shadows of Lylat and Beyond the Red Line.  In order to get notice alongside these great mods, we really had to raise the bar.

If Copperfield says to you that staying underwater for fifteen minutes is easy, would be optimistic enough to try it? :D

A magician.  A fairly famous one in the US, although he's been out of the spotlight for quite some time.

Staying underwater for 15 minutes is easy. It's surviving without air that's hard :p
