Title: Convert all briefings and voice acting from .wav to .ogg
Post by: Turambar on July 17, 2007, 10:18:36 am
has it been done?

it could save a lot of memory in-game, could it not?

First, there will be a bit quality loss. Then I'd have to include the oggs in the MV pack (bigger package...).
And finally everybody would have to delete the stu_fs2.vp. (Only 165 MB anyway.)

Too much work, not enough gain and way too risky.

I might do it for fun.

Briefing voices are unloaded once you enter the mission, so all it would really help is mission load time, and probably not by much.

There's not much point. All of the voices are already compressed, so you'd mostly just be making the sound quality worse.

Utterly no point as there would be no quality gain. The original WAV files are uncompressed (obviously), but they have a low sample rate (11050 Hz mostly) and have a 4 bit sample size. They are rather low quality as a result.

An idea I had was to add Speex support as this would be more suited to voice compression than Vorbis.

Out of interest, an original voice file from FS2 can be compressed 4 times with Speex without any obvious difference. (although this may be because the original files are bad to start with). This was with Quality 3, Complexity 3 and VAD on. (I'm open to better setting suggestions.)
