Title: Can FS2 campaign be played co-op multiplayer?
Post by: TriggerHappy on February 13, 2002, 03:16:00 pm
First i want to say that i did check all the pages on this forum, and found nothing of help.

I just installed a network at home, and was wondering if me and my brother could play the FS2 campaign (the main one, or the templar one, we have the sim of the year edition) together, in multiplayer over the LAN.

If it IS possible, will we need to buy another copy of the game?  Or can we use the disks we already own?

Also, if it isn't possible with the main FS2 campaign, or the templar campaign, are there any other multiplayer campaigns that can be played co-op?

Thank you in advance for any answers.

I don't think it's possible with the main  campaign..the templar campaign, yes.

It would be possible to use the Main campaign online after some heavy editing, but you must be insane to try playing the main campaign, ONLINE.

Alright i guess i'll have to settle for the Templar campaign.
I don't know FS2 editing, never even tried using FRED, not my thing.

I didn't want to play it online, i never played FS2 online, i wanted to play the main campaign over a home LAN, with my brother, that's all.   Like in X-wing vs Tie Fighter: Balance of power.

Oh well, too bad  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

Trig, don't get too upset. It IS possible to convert all the FS2 original missions to multiplayer, but it would be alot of work to balance out all the missions. FREDZone has converted the last five missions to multiplayer but we're still working on balancing them. Two or three of those missions have been validated as PXO missions, but they MIGHT need to be tweaked in the future.

Let me know if you want copies of these missions.

you can, try playing an 'IP' game... on 'multi' options, deselect the 'PXO LOGIN' button, and enter each other's IP in it... then just... uhhh, i dunno....  try extracting each mission with VP view or something, and play them individualy, or if you know a little about FRED, you can make yourself a campaign with those maps  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

ok, how to convert the main fs2 campaign to multi:

1, get vpview and extract all the mission files, all 80 or so of them, including the fc2 file (campaign file).  The campaign file could take a little looking for, but its there somewhere.

2, open up fred2, press "shift+c".  this will bring up the campaign editor, open the main fs2 campaign file.  Delete the first 3 or so missions (training missions, pain in the rear to convert, not worth the time) from the file by clicking each of those buttons with the mission names on them and hitting delete after each.

3, open the first mission, press "shift+n".  This will bring up a new window, which will have a number of options.  Click on multi instead of single.  close this window

4, double click on alpha 2, there is a check box labled "player ship" check it.  do this for alpha 3 also if you want 3 players, for 4 as well if you want 4 players, and so on.  You dont need to do this for the ai to be there.

5, save, open next mission, repeat steps 3 and 4 for every mission you want to convert.

thats it, no i wont do it for you, i dont have to 2 hours or so to spend on it as i have so many other campaigns to work on.  Good luck, have fun.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

forgot to mention, this doesnt fix balancing problems others above mentioned, the missions are playable, but easier this way.  Not really i big deal if you're just doing it for fun with a brother, just dial the difficulty up a bit and have fun.

I do not recomend trying to balance the missions until you go through the Fred2 walkthrough, you can mess missions up really badly.

Just a little warning if you do go into mission designing, never use the "is-iff" operator, especially not in objectives as it can really screw things over and freeze the game everytime you open a mission that uses it.

Wow guys, thanks!

I think i'll actually attempt to do this!

LtNarol, thank you very much for the guide, doesn't seem as complicated now :)

Oh and as far as balancing, i wasn't really worried about that, since i always play on hard difficulty, sometimes i even try insane :), but haven't been able to finish the campaign on "insane" yet.

P.S.
just one last question, where do i get the VPview program, and do i make a copy of the main FS2 campaign file, or do i work on the original (since i'm deleting/modifiying missions and all)?

Thank you again in advance for any answers.

the campaign file you can get off of freespacewatch.com, under freespace 2 and downloads.   go to www.volitionwatch.com  under community is freespace watch, use that link (at school and that site is blocked, dont know address by heart)  Vpview is under the downloads screen.  You'll also have to download the dll pack that goes with all the Decent programs, which should be there as well.

heres what i suggest as far as the campaign file goes, open it with the campaign editor by opening the first mission of the campaign.  Then use "shift+c" to get to the campaign editor.  there is a box where you can enter the name of the campaign, change it to whatever you want, as long as you can recognize it.

This will not affect the main fs2 campaign as long as you dont put it back into the original VP file, which if i recall correctly is Root.vp.  you should be able to play both when you finish.  Good luck, if you cant get it off the site, contact me at [email protected] and i'll send you the vpview, dll pack as well if i can find it.
