Title: Free(Space) Publicity
Post by: colecampbell666 on July 22, 2007, 07:43:32 pm
If we got publicity it would bring new players, modders, multiplayer servers, and more to FreeSpace. I am starting this thread for people to input suggestions on how to do this. I mean, stuff like Kalf's interview a while ago is great, but how many people actually saw it. As for suggestions, if we could convince GameSpotor IGN or the like to do a feature, the whole worldwide gaming community would see it.

Lets see what we can do.

P.S - How would I go about contacting GameSpot?

Let me be the first to say...

No!

If people want to go and interview project/staff members that's fine, but to go out to actively try to get interviews/features... that is just plain wrong.

Calm down. It was just a suggestion.

i'm sure it's fine to just let people know about this site. friends, family, random people on gaming sites, stuff like that.

It's not the publicity I have an issue, its how people expect to get it. Does anyone seriously not see the problems of going around major gaming sites asking for it?

We must be subtle...flexible as the grass on the wind, adaptive as a curving river but strong as decisive as the chrusing falls!

I don't see any major problem in asking. What should IGN or Gamespot do more than say "no"?

In my opinion it's worth a try.

Depends. Will it bring pricks here, or not?

I only have this to say, only the most respected project leaders/FS webmasters should be doing this.

When/how you reach out for any such publicity directly reflects on the entire FS Community even if that is not the intention.

People with a constant record of "foot in mouth disease" are not ideal ambassadors for us.

Mainly just doing a good job and lettign word of mouth is the best way. So potential interviewers don't get the feeling a contact is made simply to say "hey look at me!" It would appear to be juvenile and amateurish.

If it's worth reporting then most likely (as in the case of BTRL) the buzz generated by the gaming public is sufficient for getting attention. Thus ATM they are our defacto poster child...

I'm done. (but if anyone feels like it, I've been waiting since 2004 for inquiring minds to visit me) :P

What I do is just tell everyone I can, and download FS on school PCs with an icon that says "TRY ME!". I introduced it to my Tech-Ed teacher, who does a unit on comp. programming as a teaching tool (FRED), etc, etc.

To anyone who wants more HLP publicity:  Just do it, but make darn well sure you come across as an independent operator trying to arrange a mutually beneficial meeting, not as an HLP staff member.  Mention it off-handed to others in multiplayer games, put links in your other forum's siggys, on your homepage, etc, etc.  Just ask if they know about FreeSpace / FreeSpace2, and go from there.  ;)

I'd say lazy. But, yeah attention is attention and that's not a bad thing as fs2 is not a fart in the wind. People see the game, and they want it (they like this special fart with it's sbd stench and linger), it's been quite simple as that. People have seen me play the game, and then they want it. It might not bolster V to make an fs3, but it will increase the playerbase. And through this we get an influx of new people which a fraction will be skilled in something useful to the hlp.

Just for the record I tend to get annoyed when someone tries telling me my job. More often than not a comment like yours does more to keep a topic open than getting it shut.
