Title: Which is better?
Post by: Vasudan Commander on July 24, 2007, 06:41:10 am
Which is better? Wings3d or 3DS MAX 8?

If you're after features, no contest, Max wins.
If you're after price, no contest, Wings3D wins.

If you're just after something to build FS ships with then, well, the question all depends on the person. All apps have strengths and weaknesses, so it's mainly a matter of weighing up which one has the right balance for you. :)

(heh, and I think this thread could get a little....confusing. 2 or 3 people have mistaken me for you already. ;) )

Max also has the most evil of all learning curves.

Max is easy to learn. There're probably more tuts out there for max than any other 3d program.

That doesn't mean it's easy to learn - in fact I think it means the opposite; it needs all those tutorials because it's difficult to do even basic things by fooling around on your own :p

Even it's copy/paste system is different than standard - rather than copy/paste you have some copy/fetch nonsense, with nonstandard shortcut buttons.

Blender is FREE!!!   but it's interface may be confusing alongside some other functions.

Yeah, as long as Commander stays a noob, it'll always be easy for me to tell the two of you apart.

Hehe, if it does get confusing maybe I can use it as grounds to get my name changed to "VA" or something else that doesn't make me cringe every time I see it. ;)

Maybe I should've signed up as Vasudan Private. :D

I can't tell, cause all my experience is in using Maya, which means modelling will be difficult for me because I can't get maya to export for Lith to convert.

I'm learning to use TS, but i'm putting it on hold due to RL stuff.

back off. I've been making a decent effort to NOT be a noob, so stop trying to goad me into a flame war. you wont get it.

if you do use max do not fall into the trap of using modifiers to do everything for you. just cut up a bunch of primatives and attach them, seal up all the holes, then tweake it to perfection by moving verts around.

Ahh, my favourite TS method :)

I'm just playing around with it, and i think im getting the hang of it...slowly.  It's quite complicated, but i dont think there's any risk of smashing the whole program......is there? :nervous:

Whoa, calm down.  That was an innocent comment, made in jest.  I don't think it's worth getting upset over.

And yes, you are making a decent effort not to be a noob. :) But be sure to pay attention to your temper as well.
