Title: YT-1300 (WIP)
Post by: Tempest on July 26, 2007, 01:14:10 am
Only spent a few hours on it. Personally, the basic shape takes longest to do, and greebling goes rather quickly, although I haven't ever done a SW ship before. I'm really interested in this mod and wanted to contribute.

Thoughts?

Ooh, Blender.

My thoughts:

The cylinders 'n **** could use more vertices. And the cockpit isn't done. And the guns are missing. :P

But seriously though, I'm not sure whether Blender's smoothing tool actually carries over into the converting process, so I think you should add more vertices, like the default of 32, though from the looks of it it'll double the triangles.

or, once he's done, he can get it to one of us that does have smoothing and we can take care of it in our modelling programs before converting it.

Hmm, just a thought, isn't The Millenium Falcon a modified YT-1300?  As such, will we need two models - one Millenium Falcon, and one regular YT-1300?  Or are they visually the same?

My impression was that yes, it was a modified YT-1300. However, as I couldn't find any pictures of an unmodified YT-1300 that weren't the same as the falcon, I'm assuming the changes are things like the blasters and missile launchers.

However, I do recall a version of the Falcon that had the cockpit in the middle, and that was supposed to be the unmodified version. It wouldn't be very hard to move it at this point, however. If I can find a reference pic then I'll use it.

Dude, you HAVE to help me out with Blender. :D

I can't be much help, because I'm not using blender. I'm using Solidworks. Whatever gets the job done, though.

I'm nearing completion on the model, and I'm at about 15k polygons right now. I think that's acceptable for a model of this size, and the fact that it's greeblie monster. There's almost no reference material for the turrets, which irritates me.

Just remember that most of the greebling you can do can be replaced with maps. :)

wow, that now has more polies than my corvette!

keep some of those greebles as seperate objects so they can be used as detail boxes.  (it'll give you a higher polygon ceiling)

Comments? Questions?

After doing a bit of research, I found the thing I was talking about with the center cockpit. It's the YT-1930, an upgraded version of this ship. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/YT-1930

Also, if I'm not mistaken, this rounds out the ANH shiplist?

I tried looking for an official unmodified YT-1300 but the life of me, I can't.

The only unmodified, which could be modified, YT-1300 is the one from the TG games, specifically X-Wing Alliance. This YT-1300 has only one turret and no radar dish and is slower.

And excellent model by the way. I can't wait to see it textured.

It also amazes me how fast you guys can come up with these models. At this rate, I think a demo might come out real soon....

well, for ANH we are still missing one Death Star.

so, just the model or will you texture it too?
Title: Re: YT-1300 (WIP)

I don't know how to texture. I'd love to learn, however. I want to texture my baby, because I'm really proud of it. I have 3DS max 7, but I can't figure out how the hell to make a UVmap for the life of me.

And yes, all the Schematics show it as a YT-1300. I don't know what the modifications are, but it's supposed to be a very modular design. The turrets aren't built into the model, so you can take them off and it looks clean. The radar won't come off as cleanly, but it wouldn't take much work at all to fix that.

I thought you guys already had a Death Star? I saw some videos of it- is it not detailed enough, or what?

In addition, is there a list of meshes you guys need at the moment?

Standard YT-1300 has one turret only. The millenium falcon had two turrets, it was faster, and it had advanced sensors and such.

Isn't the Corellian transport with the cockpit in the middle a different class, not the 1300 series?  The Otana was the transport in XWA, a YT-2000 series.  http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/YT-2000 (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/YT-2000)

And, assuming he's staying around, I'll definitely be putting in a request for him to get his badge.

Ok, I just did a little more digging on the wookiee and found that there was a middle cockpit variant, which later became the YT-1930 (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/YT-1930).  But, is that what you were referring to?  It seems a bit obscure for us to worry about.

Either way, it's an amazing model, and I'm glad you did such a good job on it.  One of my favorite ships.

The Death Star model:  That was made by the old staff, and unfortunatly nothing of it was left behind.  It wasn't finished, but it did look pretty cool.  I'm sure we'll be able to cook up something equally impressive with the crew we have though.

Hey, the YT-1300 will have the radar (or is it comm?) dish as a destroyable subsystem, right?  That way we can knock it off when we go down the DS construction access tunnel?  ;7

Since the YT-2000 isn't incredibly canon, being only in XWA, it's not very high on our priority list.  It'll probably get done eventually though, just don't expect it in an initial release.

Yep. The radar dish and both turrets are subobjects and I intentionally designed them to be gracefully removable from the ship.

I've looked at the YT-2000 and might give it a shot some time, as well.

looks very nice my only question is wether the middle "trench" is a bit thick.  It might be the angle, or the fact that its usually chock full of greebles but to me it looks a bit thick, making the ship seem a bit chunky.  It's probably the angle, there's orthos galore out there so i assume you've got it measured out right.  Other then that, its a nice bucket o' bolts

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's right.  On top of that we just got a ton more references for it, so it should be a top notch model.
