Title: Folding@Home HLP Team (unofficial)
Post by: jr2 on July 27, 2007, 03:41:57 pm
EDIT: You may wish to update your client if you have not recently, as there is now an option to prioritize COVID19 or High Priority projects (previously you could only contribute to COVID by choosing "any disease").  I have not seen in the previous or current FAH version any auto-update options or notifications, so this looks to be a manual update if you wish to do so.

This is the thread for the unofficial HLP Folding@Home Team.  (Goober said I could make an unofficial thread.  Go Goober! :D )

Just put team number 81206 and your User Name into Folding@Home's client.

To get Folding@Home, go to their Download (https://foldingathome.org/start-folding/) site.

FAQ Index is here (http://folding.stanford.edu/faq.html).

Configuration FAQ & settings descriptions is here (https://foldingathome.org/support/faq/).

If you don't know what Folding@Home is, click here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folding%40home).

EDIT:

To fight COVID-19:  Select "any disease" as the disease to fight, and your spare CPU / GPU cycles will go towards fighting CV19.

EDIT2: FYI, there is now a dedicated drop-down for COVID-19 if you wish to focus solely on that (I leave mine to "any disease" but still frequently get COVID-19 jobs assigned).

https://foldingathome.org/2020/02/27/foldinghome-takes-up-the-fight-against-covid-19-2019-ncov/

The 81206 for the team number is only necessary if you want credit to go to the HLP unofficial team.

If you want to protect contributions made under your username, you can click "Get a passkey", put in your desired username and an e-mail address, and get a passkey for your desired username and they will e-mail you a passkey. This is separate from the group you wish your credits to go towards, which does not require a passkey.

EDIT2: Stats are unreliable many times, you can use ExtremeOverclocking's site fjor stats here (https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=81206)

Thanks to LTT Forum's excellent COVID-19 F@H known issues page here (https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1164541-ltt-folding-teams-emergency-response-to-covid-19/).

Relevant, didn't realize Folding@Home was running into shortages of F@H target servers (or indeed, that that was a thing at all) - Linus from LTT builds one from old parts with a few upgrades:

Just FYI, the "graphical" version can cause bugs in games, so if that happens, just quit (not pause) the graphical client, and re-start it when you're done... or use the "no-nonsense console" versions.

Just curious: How long does it take to complete these workpackets? I started at 10 PM today and it is now 130AM and the progress is still shown as 0/5000.

Then it never started.
Title: Re: Folding@Home HLP Team (unofficial)
Post by: jr2 on October 02, 2007, 09:32:04 am
Depends on if you have small, medium, or large workpackets selected, and how much you use your computer.  If you played games or rendered graphics during that time, you'd not make much progress... but you'd make more than 0, I'd think.
Title: Re: Folding@Home HLP Team (unofficial)
Post by: lenard27 on October 02, 2007, 09:45:47 am
I guess I was thinking it would count the packets individually but now it says 1250/5000, so I guess it just shows when a big clump of them are done.

Damn, I want one of those puppies.   ;7

Out of curiousity, anyone here active in any other distributed computing projects?  I looked at climateprediction.net which is quite interesting, and another project still in the planning stages is called PlanetQuest, where supposedly you help analize astronomical image data to search for extrasolar planets.

Edit:  Do you have to complete a WU before you're added to the teampage?

My uncle had a screensaver like that though, something to do with analyzing raido signals or something. He had it on so long that it burned the image into his screen. Some screensaver.

Get one of those Thermal Advantage or whatever cases where there's a pipe from the side of your case directly to over the CPU fan.  Helps alot.

Why is a PS3 faster than a quad core? especially a 6850?

EDIT: I don't show up on the team, yet it says that I have 5 processors, and am ranked 100000 of 800000. It says that I have contributed over 100 WUs to a dozen teams. :wtf:
Title: Re: Folding@Home HLP Team (unofficial)
Post by: Shade on October 11, 2007, 08:53:06 pm
Probably because the Cell processor, with its numerous seperate processing elements, is eminently suited to crunching numbers. It bears many similarities to GPUs in that regard, and those too will crush any general purpose CPU when it comes to pure math.

Not true.  Stickied just means it's worth mentioning.   It doesn't mean necessarily official, especially when I had the foresight to put "unofficial" into the title!! ;7  (Yes, I did that with this in mind... Put 81206 for the team number if you want credit to go to the HLP unofficial team (totally unnecessary unless you want to track how much we've helped as a team).
