Title: stupid reporters!
Post by: Nuke on July 28, 2007, 02:49:48 am
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/07/27/helicopter.crash/index.html

maybe news pilots should focus more on flying and less on getting the story.

I might be way off the mark, but why are they holding the felon responsible for the deaths of those in the helicopters?

Their deaths are a careless tragedy, but not something that he was in control of. They were there because of him - that much is true - but it was their own lack of skill / bad judgment / bad luck that they hit eachother. Blaming the felon seems more a way to keep the masses happy than any form of actual justice...

It very much reminds me of the stories of a busy duel-carriageway local to me. Boy-racers drive up and down it too quickly, every now and then someone loses control - hits a tree - and dies. In the last year there have been 4 deaths on the road. All at night. 1, a girl on her mobile phone coming back from a pub. 2, an old man (and I mean 70+) trying to cross the road, the other two were a 17 year old and his friend in the car - the 17 year old had passed his test 2 weeks before the crash.

Local newspapers want the road closed and are calling it dangerous. I think they're missing the point and that it was the bad judgment / luck of others that they died - not the fault of the road. So it is with this crash - it is not the fault of the helicopter manufacturers, the police, the felon the police were chasing - it's the actions of the men in those helicopters that led them to hit eachother. It's a tragedy, but if there must be blame (and these days, it seems there must) then it lies with the pilots of those choppers.

*GASP!!*  But, if people are held accountable for their actions, it means that I am responsible for my actions.  And we can't have that!

What are you trying to say here, exactly? I can't decide whether you're making light of the article, or just being a douche to Kal.

Nah, he's making light of the article.

Unfortunately there's a grim truth to what he's saying. As much as I appreciate some level of protection when affected by the actions of others - I should be held accountable of my own, you should be accountable of your own and everyone else should be held accountable of their own as well. Anything else is mollycoddling.

they deserve their fate, do not pity them. people are damn impatient. they gotta have it all and now and thus go through life in the most inefficient way possible. i find it comforting that speed, being a metaphor this rush everyones in theese days, kills. seeing this happen to phoenix's news system gives me great pleasure, my karmatic vengeance for the time they put film of me signing the dont ask dont tell form (i was trying to join the marines) on the air. grief upon their kind! BURN!  :mad2:

I'm somewhat glad i'm not the only one who feels more amused by this than shocked or saddened.

I remember watching the last feed of one of choppers, I don't have the link though. But they cutted out just when the copter crashed, but there was still a fadeout of the audio, in which you can just hear the reporter screaming his lungs out. ****ing morbid

Is it a sign of the times when my first thought was that I knew I could probably find that somewhere on Youtube, Fragrag?

And at any rate, the cause is pilot error - no iffs ands or buts about it. As the sole pilot on board the aircraft, they hold direct and absolute responsibility for the safety of that aircraft - I forget the exact rule but I know there's an FAA regulation that says basically that. If this had happened somewhere else, the cause would have been listed as pilot error, under "Failure to see and avoid".

Yeah, one of the reporters on the scene at the time stated he could hear the reporters on the way down :(

Pilot error is the cause of the crash, this public interest in 'reality TV' is the cause of the cause, and there's probably more causes after that.
