Title: 'sup. (The troll / shout out thread)
Post by: Knight Templar on July 29, 2007, 06:04:26 pm
So after waking up at noon this morning with a hangover, I was bored enough to dig out an old hdd of mine and listen to some lovely FS1/FS2 and various campaign music (Flipside, I still rock your "darkest hour" and "knossos" tracks when I feel like geeking out, very l33t.) So I got to reminiscing about various activities of my wasted youth, thinking about the joys of space sims and beam cannons. I have a week left of vacation before going back to real life, so I inevitably end up at HLP to see if you guys have put out anything neat over the past year.

And of course, you haven't. Both of my troll posts from last year in the two "most prestigious" projects are still on the first page, and near the top. Aside from a campaign Blaise put out (which are always pro) which apparently needs a patch, and a few retextured super-old models, nobody has really done anything. In fact, the only thing new are the waves of noobs who somehow end up here each Spring with their "omg why doesnt commAnd use 1000 URSAS instead of a hecate agianst a SATHANAS thats dumb" threads, and the fact that the Hard Light forum is now more difficult to find and no longer encourages discussion / debate of anything interesting.

Not to be a sourpuss or anything, but do you guys do anything around here anymore?

P.S.: I purposefully left out the SCP. Mainly because you guys are all super-tech savvy which always intimidated me, and your releases with programs that fix or do things that I never knew were a problem, with threads with all kinds of code and no screenshots of models or missions always scared me. The SCP always came up with new stuff on almost a weekly basis though, you guys deserve a lot of credit for making an old game new, and really giving this community something it can take as its own. It's just a shame that you guys put out new and cool stuff so quickly that the other end of the community can't keep up.

P.P.S.: I take everything I just said about lack of progress back. After a little research I saw that you guys finally got rid of an0n. I'm a little surprised and disappointed. I was sure he'd be a part of the administration somehow by now. In case I don't come back for a while, Hi! to all the old people and friends. Styxx, finish your goddamn campaign. Icefire, I beta'd BWO like, three years ago for you. It was just fine, and actually pretty interesting back then, and it only needed like, six missions left to be completed. wtf? Where's Turnsky and his sweet furry art? Black Wolf, finish your campaign, your writing was always great, other people should know too. Stealth, you're still gay, and your occasional emails are really creeper, but the thought is cute.

Edit: CP FINALLY put out his campaign. See guys? That's what I'm talking about.

Yes, at long last it's done. I still remember your periodic "is it alive" threads in its old forum, back when you were the premier HLP addict around here. :D

There has actually been a lot of stuff finished this year, much more than the last year or two.

an0n is not banned as far as I know. He just hasn't posted in a while.

Yea, and the BtRL demo came out. And the WC Saga. And TBP. And SoL is making rapid progress towards being released. While I agree with you about some of the stuff, you're really wrong about whether or not the community has made progress. :)

In case I don't come back for a while, Hi!

Who am I kidding? Everyone goes back to check their own threads.

There has actually been a lot of stuff finished this year, much more than the last year or two.

an0n is not banned as far as I know. He just hasn't posted in a while.

That's saying something I suppose. And that's a shame about an0n. I guess he finally left for greener pastures. Or Warpstorm.

Yea, and the BtRL demo came out. And the WC Saga. And TBP. And SoL is making rapid progress towards being released. While I agree with you about some of the stuff, you're really wrong about whether or not the community has made progress. :)

well that explains a few things again. I didn't count those because I didn't care. I don't know what BtRL is. Or "SoL." I never really liked Wing Commander, and I never watched Babylon 5 though I hear it's not bad. I'm a bit slow though, I only just caught on to Firefly last year. I guess that's all my own fault.

So, KT, when does AotD come out? :)

I would say something like "right after I quit World of Warcraft" but that's not as funny as it used to be.

Really, my project was always smoke and mirrors, no magnets to back any of it up. I never really claimed otherwise though. I mean, if you look closely, yeah I was really enthusistic about it, but aside from trying to FRED a few missions for a demo, all I ever did were superficial things, like storywriting, modeling, art work, etc, and I never had a solid base of people that cared as much as I did and had any useful skills, save maybe for Anaz, but a cool website doesn't make a campaign. Which was pretty much the community standard for any ambitious project started after oh... Inferno I guess.

It's a shame really. We came up with a really epic, quasi-original story, and with the exception of a low-grade e-fiction I wrote that nobody really cared about, none of you will ever get to hear it.

Its hard to finish campaigns when everyone is busy or people disappear (as is what happened with the original team).  After you tested we brought a few more people in, found a ton of problems, fixed them, and then the modelers got itchy about the low poly models we had ...and so thats where were at.

Yeah I'd like to finish it too.  I'm really not into FreeSpace MODing anymore but I want to finish off.

See, that's the problem. You drag it out forever and it becomes not only a chore or a job, but a dreadful one at that. **** the poly counts imo. Your models were fine. This isn't Freelancer, nobody bought the game or is staying around after 10 years for uber-sweet cutting edge technology models. In my experience, at this date in FS's age (and HLP's) people are here because of friendship, and because of story telling. Putting your story into a fun, kick ass game is the best and most receptive medium for delivery. The poly count / shininess of the models are simply the lightest of icing on the top of the cake.

This is why Blaise Russel is a relative noob to the community, but is already a legend with at least 4 solid campaigns to his name, all telling great stories and being damn fun too.

You should check Game Warden more often - BtRL is Beyond the Red Line, the BSG modification (Battlestar Galactica if you haven't caught onto one of the best scifis ever), and SOL is Shadows of Lylat, the Starfox modification.

and don't forget, ST:R is on the voice acting stage!

From what I understand, that one's pretty highly anticipated.

Of course I watch BSG. Hella good. The new one at least.

And if STR is Silent Threat.. it's been in voice acting since I was on the team.
