Title: Got a campaign idea? A mission you want to see in the SWC?
Post by: MI123645 on August 04, 2007, 03:47:28 am
I have just been recently appointed campaign manager. Any campaigns or missions that you would like to see in the SWC, send them by my way and we will see about getting them in the TC.

If you have ideas, missions, or a campaign story for the main campaign, send them to me, but they will have to go through stricter guidelines such as:

Canonical consistency (Brand-X will check this, must not contradict the films or novels)

Good grammar, spelling,  format, etc.

Overall good story telling (This has a lot of factors such as consistency, character development,  good perception, etc.)

Realistic (Facing sixteen Executors, and 6 Eclipses is not what I consider realistic :P)

And anything else that I can think of along the way.

We have been considering episodic content, fan added side missions, a forever continuing story (if the novels could do it, it must be possible :P) and more. The team will discuss these issues and see which path is the most feasible and successful.

Thanks SWC team! And the fans that support the project!

My email is [email protected]

EDIT: Some of you may notice that I do not have a badge. One might assume that I am some random guy trying to steal campaigns, missions, ideas, etc.

Chief should be coming any minute now saying that I do have such a position.

If not, I'm fuxored.

I'll vouch for ya: he is on the team, and he's quite helpful.

I had an idea for a campaign where you're a rebel pilot sent on a top-secret mission to kill fifteen executors and five eclipses! (See? Realistic!)

It's possible we'll have two campaigns, a rebel and imperial one, so for people who submit stories, make sure you write them for both sides.

Like the extension for X wing vs Tie Fighter Balance of Power ? Why not.

Speaking of X-Wing vs TIE, I really loved the mission to destroy the SSD, by ramming a corvette loaded with explosives into it. I'm sure it wouldn't be to hard to "mission" something like that up, maybe as a pre-emptive strike against a new Imperial super weapon (which the SSD could be considered as).
A probe, spy, or informant tells the Alliance about this thing under construction, then there would be a recon mission, softening-up, and finally a massive showdown with a semi-operational SSD!
OOH! To add to the suspense, you could even throw in a couple of Eclipses! :p

Also, something with the World Devestators and droid TIEs could be interesting, I've always wanted to see these.

Extraction of Bothans with the Death Star plans, even though I think this has been done before.
Alliance pilots flying TIEs to attempt to escort a shuttle out covertly, but being discovered.

I think all of these missions could be approached from both sides of the story, as Imps and Rebs.

And I am aware that I'm ripping off mission ideas from other StarWars games.

I'm not sure what you meant about submitting for both sides, if they have just one campaign that's designed for one or the other, or some mix I'm sure it will work.  My goal would be to focus on one campaign for a release and then have a second one hopefully soon after.

If you had played Balance of Power, we have 2 campaign. 1 for each side. And the storyline is pretty the same wheither you played Rebel or Imperial. The only difference are the objectives, and cutscenes.

I meant that people shouldn't just write campaigns from the rebel perspective.  I didn't mean that the campaign should work for both sides. That's just a bad idea.

I know I prefer original story driven campaigns set in the gap between Episodes III and IV simply because that area hasn't been covered in nearly as much detail as say anything post Episode VI (and a lot of EU stuff in my opinion isn't really all that inspiring with the exception of Shadows of the Empire, Thrawn/Empire Trilogy, and possibly Dark Empire).  I for one am getting annoyed with all these "Ultimate Doomsday Weapons" or "Evil generic Dark Jedi" stories (which is why I LOVE Thrawn and Xizor as villains)  They are Unique.  Thrawn was incredibly resourceful and Xizor got us a look into more of the criminal side of things.

Personally, I'd like to see much of the novels made into campaigns.  I'd like to play out the battle in which Grand Admiral Thrawn met his demise by a pincer movement executed brilliantly by Han Solo and Admiral Akbar (IIRC).  Things like that.

And who wouldn't wanna go on a Death Star run in Freespace 2?

I know next to nothing about the EU, so the only things I'm really pulling for are the good ol' trench run and the Battle of Endor finally being used in its original context.  Completely derivative, completely already-been-done, but that doesn't stop me from drooling at the thought. :p

These missions will definitely get into the SWC one way or another. As for the main campaign....

Our lid is tight on that for now :)

Yes and no. The ideas are currently going through the strict guidelines, but that doesn't mean people should stop sending more ideas.

Han Solo was on Wayland when that battle occurred.  Maybe you're thinking of General Bel Iblis?

Here's what I would not use.  I would not use Truce at Bakura, Jedi Academy Trilogy, Darksaber, Black Fleet Crisis, Children of the Jedi, Corellian Trilogy, Crystal Star, anything post Hand of Thrawn Duology (sorry, the concept of the super-god race should be left out of Star Wars.  For the super-god race, I STRONGLY recommend The Babylon Project (Babylon 5 is set up to handle this kind of thing as they are an essential part of that series plot development).  The spirit of Star Wars has never dealt with super-god races and their introduction really doesn't do anything to enrich the universe or enhance the story.

Now, there is a load of EU stuff I don't know about that might be good, but from what I've read it's mostly not worth rehashing.  That and there's already so much stuff going on post-Jedi, its harder to maintain continuity unless you're getting into "selecting what you like and canning the tripe", which I'll admit, is essentially what I would wind up doing. :p ;)

That's exactly why the lid is tight.  The team doesn't want us to know they haven't got a clue what to do for the main yet. =P  JK

Anyway, Maje, wasn't the original Sith a super-god race?  Like, pre-Exar Kun Sith.

Any of the battles from the X-wing series would be good IMO.

of course, that doesn't mean ALL 2 mil will be onscreen and rendered at one time.

Still, I may need to save some money for a SWC computer upgrade.

I have a campaign idea but how developed to want it to be? A paragraph or 5 pages? And does it have involve/be connected with the main Star Wars movies storyline? (i.e. can it be completely original?)

Well with the current ship list I would say that someone could do a lot of mini-campaigns (or a huge one) with the rise of the empire has topic (you don't think that everything was sooo easy as seen in Episode 3)

and maybe I'll do one of them once you've released... now go and release stuff!

Something that was never fully covered would be set during the early days of the Rebel Alliance's formation with trying unite various Rebel factions into a cohesive military force against the Empire.  It should be noted though, that the Rebel's primary starfighter of choice would be the Y-wing Starfighter, as the X-wing prototypes are still locked away in an Incom storehouse somewhere.  Other things to take note would be the Imperial fighters would be more along the lines of variants, such as the TIE/FC, TIE/RC, TIE/GT, TIE Vanguard, TIE Gunship (field modification), and TIE Scout.  The TIE Bomber might actually be around at this point, but if you're adhering to canon, the TIE Interceptor isn't even on the drawing boards yet, and TIE Advanced X1 at best is in the design stages since this all takes place roughly two years before Yavin.

A campaign where your in a small Rebel Taskforce (mostly Corvettes and a few fighters) being relentlessly pursued by an Imperial Star Destroyer which culminates in a final battle where you must hold out until a MonCal ship arrives.

If the imperial shadow fighter is included, (from rebel assault), it could be included in a few missions on some kind of secret campaign, or special assignments. We could say that some of those survived and are used after the battle of endor.

On the part of the Empire I would be for a Kampange during the Thrawn Crisis.

For the rebels campaign Dark empire would be quite nice. :)

the time just after the thrawn duology is when i want to make my campaign.

I like this. Corvettes are quick and have decent firepower, making them good for fast strikes. I want to play as this task force doing the stuff that provokes a ISD to chase it down first, then running away is good.

Well, the outward appearance of your posts is sure to discourage people from replying. The lunatic tone in, for example, the 'give us endor' part is, well, kind of strange.

The amount of exclamation marks in a post is inversely proportional to the general quality and maturity of the post.
Using capital letters to express intensive emotions, like in 'flight INSIDE the DS', remind at least me of dsmart's style of posting, and that just makes my blood boil.

Then, phrases like 'GIMME MY STINKING DREADNAUGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' are not only in capital letters and full of exclamation marks, but also sound quite rude. In these forums we use a little word called 'please'.

Next, I once again advise you to master the url tags here at the forums (see jr2's manual for url tags (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,49918.msg1010245.html#msg1010245).

That being said, there's also the option that maybe people just don't have anything to say.

I've been wondering...... Since the beginning, every fredder who has some skill has been avoiding the battle of endor syndrome. In case we decide to make the battle of endor mission, how could it be done without filling space with thousands of ships? Or rather, how would it be possible to give a feel of thousands of ships around us?
Perhaps making a background?

I've already got a loose structure set out for the Endor battle.  Trust me, it'll be good, and it won't have "Battle of Endor Syndrome"

Even though it's the Battle of Endor... hehe

Oh, and for the record, the Battle of Endor was relatively small compared to some of the other battles such as seen in the prequels.  There were only about 60 Star Destroyers at Endor, and about 50 or so rebel ships.

Speaking of Endor, does anyone know what the exact stats for each fleet was?  Unfortunately, there is a lot of information lapses and debate, particularly of what classes of ships, how many, and name identification.  We know that there are several MC80 Star Cruisers, mainly the Reef Home, Defiance, Maria, and Liberty, as well as Home One (I've heard this designated as an MC85, not sure if it's appropriate or not).  Other questions are if the Independence and Home One are one and the same, or two entirely different ships altogther, plus then we have to take into account the number of Corellian Corvettes (are they all CR90s, or were there any CR70s and captured Assassin-class? (X-wing Alliance gives the Masanya as a Modified Corvette (conjectured to be the same thing as an Assassin-class), though the X-wing series has been known to screw up canon from time-to time)), Nebulon-B Frigates, Gallofree Medium Transports, the two Braha'tok gunships, and the Flurry (Truce at Bakura)  There must be other ship-classes as well, since there are a whole slew of unidentified background ships in the Rebel Fleet during the end of The Empire Strikes Back, plus whatever other ships that generally are considered numerous (such as the Corellian Gunships).

With the Empire, it's a bit less complicated, however, were all the Imperators mark Is or mark IIs? How many Tectors were there.  Supposedly there was a Carrack-class Light Cruiser (this came from the story on Hyerspace that created the history for the Braha'tok Gunships), a communications jamming vessel, and at least one squadron of TIE Defenders (this may be inaccurate, I can't remember where I got the info for the TIE Defenders).

As for actual game play mechanics, I know XWA broke up the Battle of Endor into four missions, the Intial Attack, Destroy the Executor, Clear Fighter Screen, Destroy the Reactor.

Personally, I would prefer a huge battle which I think could be done similar to how Wing Commander Saga did it's autopilot feature for the Prologue Campaign, and also with a recent Babylon project tech demo where there's a seamless transition from realspace to hyperspace (though there may be stability issues with this one).

Say, the player gets within a certain range of a bitmap that's representing a Star Destroyer, and the bitmap is taken out, and a model returns in it's place.  (Not sure how practical that is or even possible).  The B5 tech demo simply swapped one backdrop for another.  Don't know if that'll work for a model.

it could be done with a LOD, since i dont know if fred is capable of doing it (never made any missions myself though :P)

Yeah, I would much rather see some aggressive LODing, even if we have two ISD models that are LOD'd differently to do it.  One could be for missions with one or two, and another could be used in instances where there's going to be lots of them.  That should be fairly easy to accomplish once the high detail version is done.
Title: Re: Got a campaign idea? A mission you want to see in the SWC?
Post by: brandx0 on December 20, 2007, 06:14:27 pm
I wonder how much a performance hit we'd take if the ISD's greebles were normal mapped, it'd have to be a pretty damn large texture, compared to shaving off a few thousands polies.  If the Normal maps are more efficient, while the hand greebled ISD would be more visually impressive (and thus, better for missions with a single ISD), we could use the lower geometry, normal mapped one for missions involving lots of them.

I'll look into it once the ISD is done though, even if we only do normal maps, I'll need to finish my high poly geometry to be able to generate a normal map anyways
Title: Re: Got a campaign idea? A mission you want to see in the SWC?

It may come out of other necessity, such as the format being able to handle all that detail effectively.  Might not just be as simple a performance hit.
