Sorry to ask such a silly question.
But as I am trying to make a quick start mission, using the fred help file. The information rectangle that should appear whenever my mouse is over a ship, but instead I am just getting a white blotch (Is that even a word?)
Any suggestions?
Ive already reinstalled drivers and I'd rather not have to redo a fresh install as I dont want to lose my delericht save file again..
Err.. seems I placed this in the wrong forum, I would delete but its not allowing me to. :(
Another question as well : Fred seems to be saving my game files in the wrong location, what is the file path that the FRED saves are supposed to go?
-
It's fine, I moved it to the right area. There was a bug with a lot of FRED2 builds over the last few months that would cause what you describe. Make sure you're using the official 3.6.9 FRED2 build from here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44291.0.html), which does not suffer from it.
The missions should go in the \data\missions subfolder of your FS2 directory.

Tried updating through the online installer (Updated, then did a reinstall) and also used the "The windows pack"
Fred opens as 3.6.9 now, I belive before was showing 3.6.8
But I still have white blocks showing whenever I run my mouse over a ship.
Edit: Nevermind, seems to be working now.. I tried launching fred directly by going into the freespace 2 folder verses start menu >> freespace 2 >> fred.
Go figure.
Edit2: Freespace still cant locate the test mission, file path is showing freespace2/data/missions and I see the file when I am doing "Save As" but nothing shows when I load it.
Seems it is telling me that when I try to launch freespace from fred (normal bootup from start menu works fine) that it cannot find the file.. would this be related?

That's normal.

You mean that it isn't showing up when you go to the flight simulator in the tech room and click on single missions?
-
Aye, all I'm seeing is two missions lablebed "Massive battles" that I assuming are generic missions tossed in there for whatever reason.
The filepath is C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\FreeSpace2\data\Missions, heck I can even see the save when I open up the folders, just not showing when I load the game.., wierd.
Oh well, I guess when I'm not feeling so lazy I'll shoot for a reinstall and see if that fixes things.
-
Don't install to your desktop. It's a dreadful idea for almost any program and it may be the cause of your current problems.
Move the entire FS2 folder to c:\Games\Freespace instead. Delete your launcher6.ini file and run the launcher again.
-
Moved the file to Games/freespace2 , deleted the launcher6. file, and just started the the online installer.
*Crosses Fingers*
Edit:
C:\Games\FreeSpace2\data\Missions
Still not showing when I load up the game
:(

are there any files in there at all (a .bak file, specifically) ?
-
Is your mission in a campaign?

Not that I see, the only files in that folder are labeled "Backup" 001-009 and a WMV file of the same name.
@ Snail
I didnt see it when I checked, I'll reload it up and check again.
Edit: No its not under campaign either.
-
Wait a second. What is a WMV file doing in that folder?

Ehh, my bad, its WMP.
-
You shouldn't have either. Are you sure it's not your mission file with the wrong extension on it? The correct extension is .fs2. Can FRED load it?

Wierd.. now its showing a file with the .bak extension
@ Karajorma
Yes, now all of a sudden Fred can load the test mission.
Seems, somehow, someway I had multiple copies of freespace on the PC, I thought I had sorted it all out, but apprently there was another copy of fred that wasnt uninstalled.
Deleted the other version, then started having that issue with fred 3.6.9 showing that white blocth.
For sh*ts and giggles I deleted that as well, now all I have is just FRED2 (aside from the game of course) which when I loaded freespace up, the test fight I made showed up.
So I'm assuming I should try another install? I'm glad it works and all but rather have the fred2_open as I would think that is the most up to date version.
Then again maybe I should just be happy its working now and leave it be.
-
You'll get a .bak file whenever you load the mission and save it successfully. Which means that your problem is that you simply need to change the extension of your mission file to .fs2 instead of .wmp
If you don't have any .fs2 files in your folder then that is why you can't load the mission in FS2_Open. You're wasting time deleting copies of FRED as there is no way having any version of FRED on your machine is going to influence anything as long as you've actually made sure you're running FRED2_Open_3.6.9 instead of anything else.
-
Everything seems to be working as it should, as in I can save missions and load them up in FS2. I had already deleted Fred2_Open, and was hoping that using the online installer would replace the file but that seems to be a no go, is there a place where I can download fred2_open by itself?
Checked the sticky but I only noticed the all in one pack. Its probably not that big of a deal, as I imagine I have awhile until I get to the point of where I would be knowledgeable enough to tinker with its more advanced features.

You know, that is not a stupid newbie question

Get the all in one pack, i would say. but I could also say that you might want to check the view menu in FRED... there might be something there that you need to turn on.

The 3.6.9 Release thread in the SCP forum has both builds of FRED and FS2_Open in it. Get that. And next time move rather than deleting. :p
