It's not exactly the "long version" of the FreeLancer introduction.  That video was released as a trailer, presumably before a major rewrite of the opening sequence was undertaken by the FreeLancer team.

Er, just so you know, it's "Freelancer", not "FreeLancer". Sorry, but that bugs me :p

Gah.  Always thought that "FreeLancer" was strange, but no stranger than "FreeSpace".

(Spoiler warning:  If you've bought Freelancer and not finished it, you suck.)

I thought the story was passable.  The big problem was the game's complete inability to hold up to multiple play-throughs very well.  That big, dynamic universe got pretty small and static during the development process....

The story as-released was enjoyable, though.  We've seen stupid-powerful, hostile aliens in enough video games.  Body-snatchers had been overdue for a ressurgence.  As video games go, I can't recall them showing up, except in the form of psionic baddies in X-COM and C&C Red Alert (Yuri, teehee!).  Digital Anvil did pretty well, unravelling the conspiracy for the player, as I recall, though it's been a while since my last run through the game.

They did very well, but what did you expect? Chris Roberts (The Wing Commander designer) was originally behind that game.

I'm glad this never made it into teh game. The Sun going nova is redicolous...
Besides, the fate of Sol system after the ships went to Sirius being a mistery is far better - it give you room to iimagine and make sequels ;)

while we're on the topic of freelancer, did they ever explain how the Hispania was lost? In one of the omicron systems (the one with planet malta) you can find the derelict hull.

There was a Coalition saboteur or saboteurs on board the Hispania. They detonated a bomb, thus damaging the Hispania's engines and making it arrive in Sirius a lot later than the other sleeper ships.

Also, a part of the people on board the Hispania ventured out in escape pods or equivalent, eventually becoming the Corsairs. Those who stayed on board landed on planet Malta and are known as the Outcasts on the game's present day.

If you go to the right system you can see the ship drifting about.

You actually forget something: the correct plural of Supernova, Supernovae. ;)

The Sun is destroyed in two(maybe three)bad endings of Colony Wars. I would also like to mention Sephiroth's attack "Supernova" in Final Fantasy VII(a very unrealistic one, though).

I think changing Freespace in Frespacer would be a competitent against this.

Now I've seen it all.
Clouds in the beginning? (FS2 Intro)
Pilot with helmet in a ship? (FS1 Intro)
Big Ship in orbit? (FS2 GTD Legion)
Battle? (FS2 Battle of Deneb)
Big Explosions? (FS2 Battle of Deneb)
Big Ships? (FS2 Battle of Deneb)
Nameplates? (FS2)
Earth? (FS2 End Petreach Speech)
Ships coming out of Earth? (FS1 Destruction of Vasuda Prime)
Earth beeing bombarded with Ion Cannons/Beam? (FS1 Destruction of Vasuda Prime)
Stars Torn apart of Supernova? (FS2 End)
Supernovas?! (FS2 End)

Man, Microsoft is really uncreative...

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic, but FS isn't exactly original either. Besides it's a space sim, what are they going to show in the opening cinematic?

Also it's FreeSpace not Freespace. I hate when people do that.

Aye!! Maybe we should put another turrent --> turrent sort of thing for 'Freespace'. ;)

I was kind of being sarcastic, but on the other hand. I am also pretty serious though. I mean you could just say they played FreeSpace 2 before.

I actualy know the capital S situation, but it is kind of annoying to type S everytime you write FreeSpace 2.

Perhaps you are right somehow with the opening cinematic, but don't you think the content is perhaps a little too similar to the one of FS? (You see, constantly writing the word "FreeSpace" is pretty annoying in itself)

No, I think this could trigger a new kind of spammer. People would write something like:

Quote
OH! YOU CANT SPELL TURRET!!! turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent turrent

So it's going to be very annoying...But I do like the idea though.

People won't do that if they had any sense. And the majority of the people here have enough sense to do "professional" spamming rather than "smiley" spamming.

Anyway, back on topic.
