I downloaded the installer via the installer thread. I went through setup, and used the detect feature for all options that could use it. When I go to play the game it says:
Please configure your system in the Launcher before running FS2.
The Launcher will now be started!
I press ok to get:
Freespace2/Fred2 cannot be run from a drive root directory!
So I am told to open it in the actual folder, and that is done. When I do that I get:
ERROR: This program was executed outside of the Freespace 2 Launcher!
The launcher has not been updated.
I press OK to get
An error occurred while patching the Launcher, 'FreeSpace2.exe'.
The remaining files were updated successfully, but your Launcher is still out-of-date.
We recommend that you manually download the latest Launcher from our website:

Do you want to visit the site now?
When I go to the website, it is just a web hosting page. I browsed the forums a little to find an answer, but nothing seemed to help my problem. If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it very much.

Don't save FS2 to "My Documents" or "Desktop"... if you did, then just move the directory to another location. If you didn't do that, or moving doesn't work, delete launcher6.ini from the FS2 root directory, and try again. (You'll need to reconfigure the Launcher after deleting that file.)

You're also running the wrong installer. You want to run launcher.exe not Freespace2.exe as the latter is just for retail while the former will run both.

I was wondering what the Squadwar update linky was about... should've figured. :D
